I've heard of these before, and yeah, they are ridiculous. I don't understand why people buy strategy guides anyways, if I need one, I just pull one up on my labtop and use it.

Exactly. What is the point of owning a strategy guide when you can find all this stuff on the internet anyway? A limited edition disc is one thing, but a$35LE strategy guide that won't have anymore info than what will be posted on the internetis just a rip-off. Also, used strategy guides NEVER sell well on Ebay (unless it is from a very rare game), so it is not like you are getting any moneys worth here.

What's the difference between the limited edition and the standard edition, besides the fact that the limited edition is $15 more expensive and says "limited edition" on the cover? Both of the product descriptions are exactly the same.

To be honest there's a lot of strategic depth to the gameplay not just in the combat. Its a pretty huge game full of many facets, different consequences depending on how you interact with various races and how you approach objectives.

A guide spelling out all these possibilities would need to be pretty deep itself for anyone wanting to know the game inside and out. But that just deletes the point of experiencing it for yourself and finding your own way.

I'd love a guide that outlines all the different species, weapons, technology, politics etc. Although there's something like that within the game itself anyway, a big databank I think.

As far as a limited edition goes, well it gives it collectabilty value for anyone that really wants it.

The only strategy guides I ever bought were one for Turok2: Seeds of Evil (I think i got it for free, or out of a second hand store), and I bought one for FFX-2 (it came highly reccommended from my friend). I can honestly say I don't think I'll ever buy another strategy guide, unless I get a used one for MGS4 maybe. But i'm picky, I don't think I'd pay over like $5 for it.

As was said already, What can you get out of an "official" strategy guide that you can't get online.. information wise? Though it IS more convenient. The thing I didn't like about the FFX-2 strategy guide was how bass ackwards it was. It'd tell you some important information about the beginning of the game, halfway through the guide. So you prettymuch had to do it all over again if you wanted 100%. (and I STILL never got 100% on that damn game... stuck at 98%)

So yeah. They are fun. but a large waste of money. And this limited edition stuff is even worse. I sympathise with the TC. he has a great point.

This is one of my current beefs. People capitalizing on video games popularity. Halo 3, Mario, now Mass Effect. Hell, theres even a Solid Snake figure (granted its insanely hard to get, and expencive). *sigh*

Slap a Halo 3 sticker, or "limited edition" on something, and it sells like hotcakes. The industry has us in the palm of their hands, and they are totaly playing with us.

My fiance bought a strat guide for WoW:BC when it came out. I just about slapped her stupid, but it occured to me she might already be stupid and I didn't want to make it any worse.

She threw it away finally. Since it become patched out of date and all.

I love the girl, but jesus H. christ... she couldn't have asked me if it was a good idea before doing it?

Strategy guides have their strengths for certain games. It's true that you can find all the information on the web, but it's nice to have a book for quick reference. Then you can sit there playing the game, and flip through the book to find tips.

I don't buy them myself because I'm too cheap and I don't want to be tempted to run to it when I get stuck.

Finally, strategy guides have been around for so long. Don't see why this one is such a big deal. It would be a big deal if there wasn't a strategy guide.

TC what you fail to realize is that strategy guides are geared towards 2 groups, harcore gamers and idiots. Hardcore gamers buy it because they know the guide will tell them every single detail and the location of every single item from day 1, they don't have to wait for some user to play though (which in the case of Mass Effect is pretty much gauranteed to be a couple of days) and then write the actual walkthrough. And even then, the writer will most likely miss some key items/missions. It could take months for a proper, comprehensive ME walkthrough to come out on a site like gamefaqs. The other target is the bumbling idiot who can't figure out how to work google, so he/shespends $35 on the "limited edition" strategy guide thinking there's something special about it other than the cover.

I'm assuming you mean that the limited edition strategy guide is overboard, not the existance of a strategy guide(as it seems most posters here have assumed :O)

I don't think so. Plenty of games have had awesome strategy guides. Strategy guides for some games can be really cool; take the twilight princess and phantom hourglass guides. The limited editions of these strategy guides are more for collectors. They actually are designed to go together;they are hardcovered, the PH guide is blue while the TP guide is alightbrown and both havethe zelda phoenix in gold. They also come with some neat things like a cloth map in the TP version. For a zelda fan, they are awesome!

I agree with your 2nd point...that strat guides are for the "less than intellingent" gamer. But true hardcore gamers don't want to go near them. Hardcores play through a game without any help whatsoever in most cases. You really think diehard hardcore Zelda fans buy strat guidesto find out where the missing heart container pieces are? No.

I'm assuming you mean that the limited edition strategy guide is overboard, not the existance of a strategy guide(as it seems most posters here have assumed :O)

Most posters haven't read my original post obviously. I said "limited edition" strat guides are ridiculous. I never said "regular, run of the mill strat guides". But people just assume I just meant strategy guides in general even though I specifically mentioned LE editions. :|

Yes i noticed, hence my comment :) I wonder how many more people to follow will make that mistake though :D

However, i do not think LE guides are even ridiculous. I understand what you are saying though; limited guides are for hardcore fans but a guide in general is not for the hardcore.. an oxymoron. However, limited guides are more then just a walkthrough. They have interesting art, sometimes some interesting extras(Zelda TP with cloth map, Zelda PH with bookmark etc) and they are collectable.. see the zelda guides(as i said before, TP and PH guides were designed to go together, asthetically of course). THe collectors guide for TP came out months after TP's release, well after i had alread "mastered" TP(including a 3 heart run through). However, being a massive zelda fan i bought it and have not regreted it(it's an amazing zelda collectable. Awell made book, it just looks good) and i'm going to get PH's guide at somepoint too, now that i've finished that!
