i loved mass effect and i loved fallout 1 and 2, i supose it is because i loved them for what they were was why i expected so much more from fallout 3, so the better rpg to me is mass effect if comparing to F3 but against fallout 1 and 2 i really couldnt pick

For the record:

Both Fallout 1 and 2 piss all over Mass Effect. There simply isn't any comparison. I would have been shocked that these games were pitted against one another to begin with, but hell, this kind of laughable **** is par for the course in System Wars.

Incidentally, Fallout 3 is better than ME as well; though by a much slimmer margin.

Thats a tough call. Mass Effect had better story, and characters, but fallout was a more fun game. It just seemed that i always had something to strive for in fallout, a new skill, money to repair a gun, or discover a new gun. In mass effect there was no variation in the weapons it was all the same gun, but colored different, sure it had better damage or accuracy but i never felt like i achieved something new. Though Mass Effect had some great character abilities. Also fallout had much better side quests, mass effect on the other hand only had a few worth playing. I think if i had to pick a game to play as my last game ever and it was between mass effect and fallout, i would take fallout. In terms of better RPG though...... idk they both are good RPGS regardless of what fallout haters say.

There is more to do in FallOut 3 but I think Mass Effect provides the better experience. Both are great games though.

Lol no, Mass effect beats Fallout.

Better storyline, characters.....

Only thing fallout has going is sidequests.

Better storyline?

Mass Effect, over Fallout?

Is this some kind of sick joke?

Fallout and Fallout 2 both brutally obliterate Mass Effect's storyline.

Classic PC elitism.

I like Mass effects storyline over the fallout games. Hell fallout 3 has a very bad story. Thank god the sidequests were so fun.

Infact the freedom is what made Fallout 3 good. Mass effect had alot of linear levels, and the fact that you cant on every planet is stupid. Lol you can land on the moon but not earth?

And no its not a sick joke. Take those fanboy goggles off please.

I don't really care which game is technically better at being an RPG, but I know what I feel, and that I trust. Fallout 3 takes place in a world inhibited by hideous characters who say hideous things with their hideous voices. I hate that part of Fallout 3, the one where Bethesda tries to make characters and dialog etc. Especially that god damn ****ing Moira. ...though sometimes I can tolerate and even accept the tangibly stupid and annoying atmosphere.

As role playing games:

Fallout 1 > Fallout 2 > Mass Effect > Fallout 3

Overall

Fallout 2 = Fallout 3 = Mass Effect = Fallout 1

All are great really IMO. :)

Both are pretty lousy RPGs. Shouldn't the question be more like "which is the better action game?"

And the correct answer is Fallout 3 is the better action game.

What's so great about Mass Effect's story? I'm not saying Fallout 3 is anything to write home about. It's not. But Mass Effect has a pretty generic, action-movie story set in space.

Generic? anything is generic if you compare it to movies/literature, there hasnt been anything original since the first mockumentary.

[QUOTE="kolkov01"]

and freedom, and...you know ACTUAL role-playing

heretrix

What does this even mean? Both games are RPG/Shooter hybrids. Both games have stats that are upgraded over the course of the game and in both games you are playing a role. The biggest difference between the two is Shepherd has a voice.

He was talking about Fallouts 1 and 2, where your choices actually mattered and there were a wide number of different roles to play. Fallout 3 was almost similar, but only in an extremely simplistic way.

As for Mass Effect, that had far less roleplaying, since the game really only had good/evil outcomes to the quests (which could only be completed in one way - shoot everything in sight, occasionally persuading people to stand down every few quests), and virtually no meaningful choices to make, as only two or three conversations had any in-game consequences.

In any case, I'd rank them something like Fallout 2 > Fallout 1 >>> Dragon Age Origins > Fallout 3 = Mass Effect in terms of actual roleplaying. As for what was more entertaining, swap Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

*Short answer* Mass Effect is a better game, but in terms of roleplaying it probably isn't much better than Fallout 3.

Why would you even come to a discussion forum if you don't want to see topics argued/discussed? IMO, neither Mass Effect or Fallout 3 are the truly spectacular RPGs everyone seems to tout them as. Mass Effect had a good story, and it was told fairly well but it had a "summer blockbuster" feeling to it for me, which hampered the atmosphere and narrative a bit. There wasn't much room for expansion of your character either, the choices are either "GOOD" or "VAGUE NEUTRAL" or "BAD", which is really incoherent as RPGs with "proper" (and i use this word lightly) narrative, such as The Witcher, or Planescape, provide much more choice, or dialogue expansion. There isn't really polar black-and-white choices in real life, just one big shade-gradient of gray; while you could say "it is just a game", RPGs are the "books" of gaming, and are supposed to be deep in dialogue and prose with contextually interesting responses with masses of outcomes to shape your character with. "GOOD" or "BAD" is just a very immature and blind-sided way to drive the story forward. Hell, the game even coloured the choices for you to see whether you were being the angel or devil on your proverbial shoulder. It was entertaining, but not a great RPG. Fallout 1 and 2 did this really well, but Fallout 3 sort of brushed over the whole topic fairly quickly, giving you the banal polar choices which seem to plague RPGs recently. Fallout 3 was slightly more interesting, with a few meaningful things scattered over the entire game, but it was really watered down.

I like Fallout 3 when I want to run around and make my own little adventure, which is pretty much all I do in Fallout 3. The world is pretty well constructed for going on little unscripted expeditions to see what kind of goodies you can find scattered throughout. But Mass Effect takes it, I think, for being the better game. I've loved every minute of Mass Effect, and it never started feeling mundane or boring.

Fallout 3's gameplay is an embaressment to good RPG's out there. The crappy animations are downright embaressing, also. It's hard to take that game seriously, I found its review scores unbelieveable. Terrible game. Mass Effect, while it had a lot of setbacks, was vastly superior in every way besides open endedness.

Exactly, The Witcher, I think, was the last RPG, that given the moral choices, you couldn't differ which one could be "good" or "bad". That's the way it is in real life, things are not highlighted as "right" or "wrong", there is only different points of view and perspective.

Now that I think about it, Fallout 3 has WAY better DLC Episodes (BDTS was alright, PS was crap though), so I'll say that Fallout 3 is slightly better than Mass Effect, but Mass Effect is still amazing.

...am I going to Gaming Hell?
