Both the Wii and Xbox 360 are only capable of playing DVDs, so it's not like their going to suddenly redesign them to use Blu-ray.
Also, Over the years, it's been shown that the amount of storage doesn't really matter, because the developers will come up with a way to overcome them.
Given that the addition of a Blu-ray drive isn't helping PS3 games, I'd say it isn't needed. But they should utilize the hard drive more often.
That was a real dumb ass move by MS not including the HD with every unit. They should have found another way to differentiate the core from the premium.

They're compounding that dumb ass move by pricing that hdd so high. I just bought a 160 gb drive for my PS3 for HALF the price of MS's 120 drive.

I own a PS3 :? I honestly want to know if Blu-Ray will ever really be needed this gen or are games like Mass Effect showing it doesnt...if it doesnt o well, a blu-ray player is a plus in my eyes.
Nothing is needed, shoot they could make games on CD still if they wanted. Blu ray may make some things easier or, help out in some instances, but DVD will suffice this gen.

you are incorrect, the amount of storage does matter. Thats why every gen there is a bump in storage capacity for the media being used. As the industry grows, games become more complex. They require much more space. Compression is only going to go so far before you have to upgrade to something with more space.
Sony could have waited until next gen to implement bluray, and been fine with dvd this gen, but they didn't so its a moot argument. I am glad they have bluray in the PS3. It gives devs a head start on optimizing for it for next gen, and gives them some breathing room for this gen. I also love the way the movies look.
[QUOTE="PBSnipes"]I would love to hear Bioware's take on whether or not BR would have helped Mass Effect. The biggest issue with the game (at least from what I've heard) was development time, so it would be interesting to hear if they think the ability to use BR/HD-DVD would have allowed them to add more content.XanderZane
They would be able to utilize the Blu-Ray space without any issues. The main problems Bioware would have with Blu-Ray is the very slow transfer rate and the amount of time they would need to fill the disk. If you think it took a long time making the game on the XBox 360, imagine how long it'll take to make it on the PS3. Probably a good 2-3yrs I would think. Just think about it. Where is FFXIII? Didn't they start making this game back in summer of 2005 and it may not even be released in 2008. That's the problem RPG developers are going to have with programming on the PS3. Not saying the games won't be great, just saying you'll be waiting forever to finally play it. Most most publishers, they want the game done in under 2yrs so they can start seeing profits from it.
yeah, blu-ray is the biggestlet down this gen.
