although i think the game is really really great, giving it the title "Game of the Year" is sending out the wrong signal to developers.
The game just has to many small issues:
- LOADING TIMES: too frequent and in strange places
- texture pop-in: sometimes ten seconds
- Framerate issues
- graphics are breathtaking in some places, downright ugly in other places/ FACES
- Dialogues: many times there are 4 options... but basicly 4 the same options....
- Planets: in every system there is usally only one planet that you can land on.. some other planets are bare wastelands and a complete waste of time

Agreed. Its a good game... Could be GREAT though if Bioware wouldn't have rushed it

Mass Effect was rushed? How about a tad overambitious?

They optimize and tweak the FPS, graphical features, etc in the last 1-2 months to make the game run smoothly and look polished technically and visually. I think they should have delayed the game until January or so to get these things polished. Yes, the game was rushed
Even with its flaws.
Its the only game I finished 3 times to see the different stories.. right there alone =GOTY for me..

You're blowing those issues way out of proportion. They are there in the game, but in no way do they take anything away from it. The most legitimate issue that you have is about the planets being the same. Hopefully DLC will fix that.

Thanks for making GOTY title meaningless.. I recall a time when GOTY actually is worth something. Now, people use it like poop.

Totally agree with you...but I don't find the graphics really "breathtaking", it sort of looks like clay to me, but it does look pretty good when the sun is shining on the 'rover and the planet.
Awesome , it totally deserves it. Its by far my favourite game of the year.

OF COURSE poeple like you would say that.

Bioshock won GOTY on G4..
What was funny was that not one single PS3 game made the list.
Halo 3 ( 360 )
Mass Effect (360)
COD4 ( MultiPlat )
SMG ( Wii )
Assasins Creed ( Multiplat )
All hail the mighty PS3 and it's continued flopage :D
Totally totally undeserved. its outclassed by many titles this year.Cali3350
I haven't played one better... sorry... I liked it better than Mario Galaxy, Halo 3 and even Bioshock... and I loved me some Bioshock....
Mass Effect is the GoTY...

You're welcome. :P
But people in System Wars weigh the source. I didn't count two of the awards I was sent, so I know what you're saying.I know the difference between quantity and quality, but for example the VGA panel had Jeff Gerstmann plus three current or former GameSpot editors, plus the editors in chief of Game Informer and EGM.
GotY's are often the product of robust argument, which gives them weight, and they are a mental exercise, since it's hard to analyze an entire year of games, and it's hard to compare the Wii's strong contender versus the more traditional platforms plus pc.
I'm trying to see something about GotY's this year and just wanted an accurate list, nothing more. :)
