Massive Blow for 360 & Wii. Checkout the link. MS is losing money because of this and if the 360 does fall it will because of piracy. At least the Wii have tonnes of loyal supporters. PS3 I doubt they will pirate tht

There are already pirated PS3 titles in Indonesia, and that's even old news.

Every console has tons of loyal supporters, but there are always people that'll also go for piracy, no matter which platform they own.

The best by a mile, lemmings are spending big bucks on games. I've got ten 360 games and only one Wii game.

Lots of you aren't aware of the fact that a great deal of success PS2 had is due to modded consoles.. You really think that sony would sell 120mil ps2 if it was unmoddable?!?!?Chofee

righttt.......So you mean the ps2 was successful because i could buy a system, mod it for 80 or so bux, and then never EVER buy a game ever again right?

If the modding of a system made it successful then the companies wouldn't be fighting againest it, Or do you think they are fighting agaienst it for pure simple honor that people are modifying a system they didn't have permission to modify?

Or could it be because a good 99% of modders mod because they want games for free......hmmmm and if no games are sold...then no money is made, and the industry dies...

PS2 was pirated to death too, did it fail ? In fact companies want piracy, since buyers that might not buy a game normally, try it on the modded 360, then buy it original for the extra perks

LOL ok keep telling your self that man, last time i checked you could play online...ect every thing with the firmware hacked dvd drives...so what again would be the point of buying the game?

and if they wanna try it go and rent it. simple fact the ps2 wasn't pirated as much as you people think, but to say piracy was why it won is just...silly.

Through your attempt of irony you have made completely correct conclusion.. Yes, ps2 was successful because lots of people knew that they could buy it and mod it to play pirated games..

Think about this.. Why do you think people buy modded consoles? Don't have money for games or just dont want to pay 50$ for something they can get for 2$.. Doesn't really matter.. The fact is, those people wouldnt even buy a console if it wasn't moddable, but since it is, they atleast do that.. Sometimes im just appalled by the lack of logic you people are displaying..

Actually you should be appalled at the logic your some how comming up with.

Let alone THE FACT if every one modded they're consoles and never purchased games only downloaded them...well that wouldn't happen because the industry would die, Without income from games the company that created the system would die, Therefor that system would die, and no longer be made, therefor it wouldn't sell upwards of 120m.

Let alone less then 20% of the ps2 owners actually modded they're systems, They modded them for the simple reason of playing free games, They can lie all they way and say i modded it to play backups, but no, If you take care of your discs, and your system then it will never scratch your games and the games will survive for a long time, They mod to play games for free without spending money.

Your logic is massively flawed if you think for one minute that ps2 and ps1 we're majoritively successful because of piracy.

If my logic is flawed, yours is nonexistent.. I ask you again.. Do you think that people who dont have enough money to buy games or are to cheap to do it because they can have it for 20x less money, do you think that they would buy unmoddable console? Logic dictates that the answer is no because they can't or don't want to pay for games.. So if the console is unmoddable, the actual pool of people who are buying original games isn't changing and console itself isn't selling. But with moddable console, atleast console itself will be sold. I don't understand how you can't grasp that simple concept.

Mind you, i'm not saying that console should be moddable right on, but at some point in lifespan of a console, it should be moddable.

MS won't.. Be certain about it.. You know why? Because those people who bought modded console might still pay for LIVE subscription.. MS is cunning, and they know what they are doing.. There was a rumor that MS leaked first modchip for original xbox and i think that's very close to actual truth..

Exactly, and thats the fact lots of ppl here fail to realize.. The modding community actually boosted xbox sales quite alot and they alone kept the console alive.. Xbox would have probably failed if it wasn't moddable..

Considering Sony said they will support Homebrew and modding this time around for the PS3 (advertising it as an open system, which runs linux mind you), there will be pirated games. HOWEVER, big however, Sony also knows that the blue ray will allow for developers to use up to 50gigs worth of game. I believe they plan on having games really use up that space, therefore, Pirating large gig games will not be as easy or convenient as it may seem. I dont think Sony is worried as much about Piracy as the other systems with their 4-9gig games.

1.- Sony made a profit on the PS2. "most companies" was everyone but Sony last two gens.

2.- No, not EVERYONE modded their systems... but a large percentage did, especially in poorer regions.

3.- Get off your rose-colored glasses. Same thing happened with the xbox. A lot of people got one for the modding capabilities. Heck, in Mexico, they even make pirate SNK arcade cabinets with a modded xbox, pirated joysticks and roms.

And in any case, piracy exists. Piracy sucks. There are leeches out there... and it has never killed any console out there. The PS1 was ridiculously easy to pirate. The PS2, ditto. Both sold like hotcakes.

WilliamRLBaker you = 100% Correctomundo.   BUT...... Chofee does have a slight point.   I personally tried to mod my first PS2, and I messed it up, I had zero soldering experience, and I made a mess of things   Then I got my 2nd one, the system bundle that came with GT4 :D  those were good times :P  But yea I am one of those people that ended up purchasing a 2nd console cause of my stupidity.

Now things have changed MASSIVLY in the "Scene" compared to back in the day.  The firmware trick for the 360 is easy as pie if you know what your doing, and mod chips for the wii just take some soldering skill ( of which I have none  ) and PS3 I don't know of anything for PS3 yet, but I am sure the "Scene" will get right on it...... they always do.... cause ya know... they are the "Scene"

***EDIT***

On a quick note, I just re-read my post, and it kinda sounds like I am implying that I did the firmware hack to my 360, no i didn't and as you can see from this pic I buy my games.  ( And this is a old pic, heck my wii ain't even in that Pic )

LOL mine is nonexistant.

LOL here is your logic.

If a system is modable and people can steal games and not pay a dime for them then that console will be successful?

So where is the company making its money from then? because by your logic the majority of people modded the console and used it to play free games....Because microsoft didn't make money off the xbox ever, And the ps2 didn't start to make a profit till what a year after it was released? even then sony was still selling ps2 consoles at a loss atleast 2-3 years after release. I.E they made MINUS profit of the system So how did they make money then?

Basically what your saying is, Hey they opened up a new carnival in town, yeah but it costs to enter and all the rides and games costs money. oh I know ill pay to enter then ill just go to this other carnival where every thing is free.....

So if it costs the carnival 1000 dollars a day to run, and they only make 300 a day...

LOL and people we're still signing up for xbox live? yep on the 360, But on the xbox there is no modchip that runs on xbox live, Live detects it and thus blocks said xbox from xbox live, The only reason the 360 hasn't done this is because the only way to play free 360 games is through a firmware hack on the dvd drive, not on the system it self.

Im not gonna argue any more, I will say this.

Here is basically what your saying.

Gillete released a new razor its amazing, It costs them 30 dollars to produce and they only charge you 10 dollars to buy it, and the RAZORS ARE FREE!

Actually, I heard that if you mod your 360 or such pirate ways, MS can actually see your 360 info and shut your account down forever.

What's a 360 with no Xbox Live?  I'm certain Sony and N will follow suit, though the Wii might not have enough processing power to hold such information. XD

nope it wont cause it to fail unless its so amazingly easy that you can just hit a few button presses to get past the security, but its certainly not what makes a system successful.

the xbox had a huge modding community they did amazing things.Decko5

Quite a few of those teams are currently working to mods for the ps3, mainly because of the hdd. One teams even got an iso working on the ps3, but the main problem is finding a blu-ray drive (thats right for the job), then making a rip program, then hacking the key environment for the game (or for any blu-ray) and then bypassing the the os functions setup in place at the moment (fixes for those can be updated just like the ps3 can get updated so sony really can't do much if you have a smart programmer in your crew), then getting that iso onto the HDD.

Theres quite a few teams working with linux environments to use the blu-ray drive itself with rip programs, the main problem comes with...hahaha you didn't actually think i was going to explain it ^_^ that would just bring down the wrath of a mod.

Although the stuff holds true i won't link anything, not aloud around here.

The wii was probably the easiest to pirate out of the bunch with its easy infrastructure and the ps3 is the hardest. Unfortunately piracy is sometimes good for a console like what happened with teh ps2 and xbox. People buy a console, mod it and get free games, companies wont complain because they are lining there pockets. Its the developer losing out on piracy, not the console company itself.

wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow and one more wow..

Don't even know where to start.. You simply aren't reading my posts or you really lack reading comprahension.

Lets start from:

So where is the company making its money from then? because by your logic the majority of people modded the console and used it to play free games....Because microsoft didn't make money off the xbox ever, And the ps2 didn't start to make a profit till what a year after it was released? even then sony was still selling ps2 consoles at a loss atleast 2-3 years after release. I.E they made MINUS profit of the system So how did they make money then? WilliamRLBaker

You're right.. They were at loss for every console sold because manufacturing and development expences per console were higher then the sale price that console had. If something costs 800$ to make, and you sell it at 700$, you're 100$ at loss.. And now, can you tell me how much you are at loss if that thing isn't sold at all? 800-0=??? You are practically saying that it's better to lose 800$ then 100$.. Oh, that's jolly good.. I'll bring 100$, you bring 800$ and we are in business..

Let's move on to the next logical paradox:

Basically what your saying is, Hey they opened up a new carnival in town, yeah but it costs to enter and all the rides and games costs money. oh I know ill pay to enter then ill just go to this other carnival where every thing is free.....

So if it costs the carnival 1000 dollars a day to run, and they only make 300 a day...WilliamRLBaker

If you don't mind me saying, thats the worst analogy in history of carnival analogies :) If you want to make a proper analogy of what i said using carnivals, it would go something like this.. There are 2 carnivals in town.. Both are pay to enter, but 1 is slightly illegal and it's rides are free, and its up to you to chose. You can't play console games (be it original or otherwise) without a console, so there is no free entry to the carnival.. You must understand one thing.. I don't support piracy but i support modded consoles even though im well aware that they are mostly used to play pirated games.. All i've been saying from the start, which you are failing to understand, is that modded consoles played a great role in overal console sales last gen and thats a fact whether you like it or not.

And for the very end, icing on the cake:

Here is basically what your saying.

Gillete released a new razor its amazing, It costs them 30 dollars to produce and they only charge you 10 dollars to buy it, and the RAZORS ARE FREE!WilliamRLBaker

Another bad analogy, but still quite better then the previous :) Let me illustrate what you are saying..

Gillette released a new razor.. Its amazing.. It costs them 30$ to produce and they only charge you 10$ to buy it.. But since they figured out that you have a special way of getting razors for free, they won't sell you the razor blade even though they would gain 10$ for it.. You're practically saying that it's better not to sell a console then to sell it.. Do you understand now how faulty your logic is?

For the 3rd time.. People who buy modded consoles for sole purpose of playing pirated games would never ever buy unmodded console and games for it, so those people don't affect software sales at all.. They won't make other ppl buy less games nor they will buy games themselves.. So, isn't it better that they atleast buy a console if nothing else. Next time, please read the post with understanding, then start writing a reply..

its not a massive blow actually since everyone knows that modding is a huuuuugeeeeee system seller.  It is one of the reasons that ps2 was so successful whether you'd like to admit it or not.  Im not for modding but I agree with some of the reasons for it.  I mean why the hell are games 70$?? this is totally unacceptable.

Massive Blow for 360 & Wii. Checkout the link. MS is losing money because of this and if the 360 does fall it will because of piracy. At least the Wii have tonnes of loyal supporters. PS3 I doubt they will pirate tht

What most people don't understand is that yes, modding can sell more consoles, but that was LAST gen. This time around, it takes MILLIONS of dollars to make a great game, and when developers don't receive enough profit for their efforts, it means less funds and support for their games, and ultimately, they will need to spend less on developing games. People have got to stop looking at the past, and see how much it costs to make games today

PS3 games were up on the net 2 weeks after it released. The reason why it's not 'huge' is because currently you can only play them on your HDD on PS3. Both BR & HD-DVD have been pirated now, so its only a matter of time before someone makes a program to rip the games. BR burners are also quite expensive...but that will change by the end of the year!

Exactly. Pirating games nowadays will only hurt you in the end.

DVD burners cost $25...

It will take 10 years for BR writers to reach this pricepoint...

I've been saying it for a long time, but I'll say it again: PS3 OWNS! It can't be pirated so easily by criminals and scoundrels out to ruin the game industry, and that's another reason to go BluRay (apart from the fact that HDDVD is hanging on by a thread named walmart).

pirates usually target popular consoles (like PS2, Wii, X360). I don't see how PS3 falls under the "popular" category, hence the reason why it still resisting.

Piracy if a fact of life. As long as people remain greedy, piracy will never be eradicated.

On another note, yea piracy sux for game companies, but M$ is still making money. The X360 firmware does not allow you to alter any game or cheat on LIVE. So M$ is still making money from these people when it comes to LIVE subscriptions & market place content. M$ knows what they're doing. Plus if they tried to release a mass update to thwart pirates, they could wind up bricking peoples consoles who did nothing wrong. IMO M$ will eat this loss & release new drives in the near future.
