Excellent news!
Down with pirates!
This can only mean good thigns for PC gaming.
'course the victory will likely be short lived as people move on to yet another service.
Anyone care to estimate how much this would effect piracy in the shrot run? A little, a lot? Not at all?
(I'm not a pirate so I don't know anythign about this site).
I think MU was one of the best filesharing websites, period .. and I hate gaming pirates.Excellent news!

dude, get with the times. torrents and bakabt is where it's at. Not that I use them :P
Well they may have had illegal stuff on there, sure. But this is exactly what people were trying to prevent. Megaupload was hosting terabytes of files for Open Source games like Frets on Fire and such. And now all that content may be gone.
Many mods, open source, Linux distros and other community projects use sites like that or even torrents for distribution. All of which is free and legal. This is bad news.

Didn't people move from torrents to file sharing websites and not the other way around?I really don't see how the powers that be think they can stop this kind of file sharing.
Surely people could just put whatever they want into modern cloud based services like Dropbox and just give other people access to their box so they can download what they want...
People will always find a way to share what's theirs with others even if that means those other people get something for free that they were probably supposed to pay for.
Poor Americans. Their government is going to take down a lot of websites.Eponique
Which won't affect just Americans. :(
Those who say this is great news is just being ignorant... Megaupload wasnt just hosting pirate content, and they did take down files when they got a report for copyright issues.. just like any other similar service.
You cant takedown an entire service to due to some people using it as piracy.. i know some people were using it as a storage safe.
At this rate, if someone was using steam chat to spread links to download music for free.. they will just take down steam.. this is not how you fight piracy... and if this is the route they are taking.. then i prefer to be a pirate...
SOPA = TERRIBLE

Perhaps this could be seen as a good wake-up call for filesharing sites to start monitoring what they are hosting.
Megaupload would not have been shut down had they stuck to the legitimate open source game stuff, and had not been such a haven for pirated material.

I think the rest of the world will adapt. But yeah, it's going to suck short-term. :( I just hope the rest of the world doesn't start implementing stuff like this. I mean, if they had to go all the way to New Zealand to arrest those guys, I already have a scary feeling that the US is going to bully the rest of world to make similar laws.[QUOTE="FashionFreak"]SOPA Preemptive strike!

Didn't people move from torrents to file sharing websites and not the other way around?wasn't it Kazaa/Limewire to File Sharing Websites to Torrents
Although both file sharing websites and torrents are still used.
I'm no fan of the Sopa bill at all, but this incident really had nothing to do with it. This was a case that was built over 2 years with the copyright laws that already exist. And, to be honest, I read the report, and there was around $750 million worth of copyright infringements. Plus, Megaupload also sold advertising space to sponsors. Kinda hard to turn a blind eye in this specific situation.

They'll figure if the US can get away with it without any social problems then they surely can.
Wut????
That sucks, Megaupload was one of the best sharing sites as well as one of the most responsible sites since it always took down most of the illegal stuffs, but yeah, such a huge blow for pirates, i can see them shaking out of fear due this
Stupid Federal Prosecutors who doesn't now a jack about the Internet...
Perhaps this could be seen as a good wake-up call for filesharing sites to start monitoring what they are hosting.
Planeforger
How the hell can they do that? With the ammount of content that was on megaupload it would take centuries monitoring it, that's assuming people would stop uploading new content.
Why don't they shutdown youtube btw? I'm pretty sure you can find IP violation in there. Or millions of other websites in the net that post videos or images which belong to someone else.
YouTube is almost nothing but violations. It's practically free music, videos, complete older movies are found on there. They would pretty much have to shut down the entire internet to stop it all.
I wouldn't put it passed them. Hell EA, Activision and Blizzard would probably find ways to charge season passes and make money off of website access.
