In real life, yes. But gaming is a whole nother story.
Mr_lulz

I think Sony and Microsoft are applying the same rules though. If you've got goals set-in-stone (i.e not floating around in your head), you're more likely to get out of your way to achieve them. Perhaps they believe it will increase the longevity of games if they give you something to work for, no matter how geeky it looks.

All I know is that you can beat the game without dying on the lower 2 difficulties.

thrones

I beat it on Solid Normal without dieing, no alerts and no kills.

:D

Nice :D. My bro did so as well. He's working on getting the Big Boss Emblem.

People! Please! Enough of all this! If you want a challenge, play on Big Boss Extreme, but I warn you, if you want to fire your gun off even once, just play on Normal or Hard. You can't fire off a single shot or jog for even a few seconds on Extreme, the AI is way too careful for that. I was sneaking through some bushes on my way to the cabin to fight laughing octopus when those elite commando ppl (forget their names, the women in the exoskeletons) tracked down my footprints and saw they led into the grass. The AI then crouched down and slowly spread out, using hand signals and the occasional whisper to communicate. Needless to say, they found me shortly after and riddled my poor body with bullet holes. Actually, play on Hard if you want a challenge, Extreme if you're masochistic. Once you've gotten as far as you can on Hard or Extreme, come back and apologize about what you said about MGS4's AI.

Hehe, the A.i hasnt always been known for being amazing in the series but the thing is that its smart in its own ways. Its hard to describe but being that its a stealth game, (and good ol Kojima) its A.i will do alot of things that other games dont have them do. Like I said though its really bad being mgs but really good because its mgs.

....Confusing mgs A.I is, young one :P

the A.I is probably on the same level as Kojimas intelligence

Episode_Eve

Super high, It's got to be higher than yours because I bet my life you couldn't create a game with a story as complex as MGS and tie everything up... fanboys these days.

 Yeah... I think the "MGS4 has bad A.I." argument should be over now.

 yea, so should the "The MGS Series has good writing" argument :P

It's a great game but the AI is really bad.

I'm a man of few words, any questions?

Episode_Eve

No it's not. What dificulty are you playing one? Play on "Big Boss" dificulty the AI is much better.

- Enemies spot you from very far away
- Damage taken is much greater
- Enemies hear even the slightest of footsteps
- Enemy patterns are different almost every time, so there's really no remembering them.
- Enemies are just smarter and more agressive.

You must have been playing on Normal or Easy. If you want a death wish play on "The Boss Extreme" :).

On Boss Extreme they can see you across the map if you drop below 60% camo.

They can see you from like 20 feet away if you drop below 70% camo. If they're within 4-5 feet they can see you pretty regularly if you're below 80% camo and sometimes even above 80% camo.

They flank, often run all the way around you in a pack to catch you off guard (and they destroy you at that difficulty mode). In a full confrontation, and I've tried this a lot (on accident since its so easy to get spotted), I can kill no more than maybe a half dozen if I'm using cover, and I am VERY good at spotting and nailing headshots on a consistent basis with high camo. Trying Boss Extreme to get the perfect run is seriously a lesson in testing Hideo Kojima's temper. It is a beatdown. If I get in a locker, they walk straight at it with teammates in stow and check every one....they usually get the exact one you're hiding in the instant they walk by it. They send patrols to observe every nook and cranny for the entire duration of the caution/evasion phases and they use cover/flanking/grenades to clear you out. I've never lasted more than maybe 1-2 minutes in a full gunfight with these guys, even when pulling out all the stops.

They also follow footprints, are superhumanly aware of every footstep you make in their vicinity...

Half Life 2 doesn't exactly have legendary AI. FEAR wasn't superior to any difficulty setting I've played, and FEAR on the normal setting certainly wasn't comparable to MGS4 on Boss Extreme.

Their range of detection isn't high, but when they are on the ALERT Mode its damn tough to get rid of them. Remember people this is a game, and it follows the same pattern as other MGS games.

?,!,ZZ,

On Boss Extreme their range of detection can literally encompass the entire radar range if you're about 20-30% camo. It's superhumanly high, especially considering that in multiplayer, Snake literally disappears when he reaches a 80% camo index. He turns invisible, unlike what you see on his character model when you're playing with him.

Imo on the standard difficulty it was brain-dead. Either that or the game itself was too easy, the tranquilizer was pure rape. I have yet to play big boss but i can't drag myself too, it just lost it's magic. Anyway, at least it's not like Dom's AI , i dont get why epic crafted such a freaking smart AI for the locust and lobotomized Dom. Jesus..

Again, it's not good AI, it's an auto-aim focused bot ignoring the waypoints/clip of the level.

a lot of people seem to think that good AI = high difficulty.

That is not true. They are separate. The difficulty in MGS4 is variable. The AI is top notch imo. Enemies seem lifelike, they get startled when you blow your cover, and if you do something just slightly suspicious they will investigate the disturbance with caution and curiousity. In combat, they seek cover and will get to you if you don't get moving.

There are moments where they seem to give up chases too early and they don't have good memories, but those limitations are what allow Snake to act like a spy and are well planned by the developers.

It does, it happens in every game. But i found it most noticeable in this game, along with UT3 and Far Cry 2.

I have never been spotted unfairly in mgs4 like through a wall or anything. Its always me being careless. Its incredible when you're on a ledge up top of a building and a guy on the road below over 100ft away spots you because you stood up. No games do that.

The AI isnt bad, its just playable. If they made the AI like real people, the game would be completely unplayable. Humans are not logical beings. Sometimes we just get this "feeling" that someone is behind us. How do you simulate that in a game? If you had opponents that randomly get "the feeling" it would break the game as there would no longer be any rules to the game. You could be sneaking perfectly well and then the guy could just randomly turn around and spot you, thus removing all skill from the game and making it mostly just luck based. In a stealth game, its absolutely necessary to have AI that has predictable patterns. AI without patterns and with random interactions in a game like MGS would be like as idiotic as an FPS which randomly changes objectives but doesnt inform the player.

Yes they do. You stood up? Of course they are gonna notice you, games use awareness 'levels', stood has a higer chance of being spotted than crouching/prone. It's that simple, even CS1.6 had that. Look there's no magic to MGS4's AI, its good but dont put it on a pedestal when there's clearly better AI out there.

The AI is easy to fool in the lower difficulty levels, but definitely not in Big Boss Hard and The Boss Extreme.Lab392
This is false. I spent all weekend playing it, on hard, and the AI is jsut rediculous. You can walk right up to many of them without being noticed, and then they just stand there. If you run, they group together, and where one guy gets stuck clipping into the wall, the rest of them do also. Its a fun game and all, but the AI .. wow, for a machine with such 'amazing super duper power' the AI is pretty bad.

Dude, I beat this game on Normal and Big Boss hard. I'm playing it on Boss Extreme and trying for a perfect run, so naturally, I've played through short segments about a 100 times all throughout Act 1. And I've never experienced what you're describing. If they see me, it's because they have a clear line of sight, either through a transparent obstacle like a mesh fence or they hear me and go down to investigate. Their lines of sight and detection radii are flawless as far as I can gather. Trust me, I went through the exact routine of taking out two soldiers by lying prone right next to a doorway multiple dozens of times and then performing a holdup and frisking/knockout them. When I was exposed too much or my camo index was too low, they spotted me. When I was sufficiently located behind the wall, they never noticed me. Never. I've never had someone shoot me through a wall that I've noticed, either. I sincerely doubt you've played this game even one second longer than I have.

[QUOTE="longshotgir"][QUOTE="blues35301"] no its not. its more realstic. if you saw a guy in a blue sneaking suit a street 100 yards away and you knew he was the enemy you'd go for him right? thats what they do. on the easy difficulties they dont see you til theyre like 10 feet in front of you. you've just been softened up by games with easy ai.blues35301
Easy AI? You mean games like Half-Life, Crysis, and Gears of War? Look EVERY game uses waypoints and awareness attributes through clips in every level, even the smartest bots. Im just saying it is pretty noticeable. Also, i didn't say the AI is awful, ive seen way worse, it is just that i noticed in many moments 'oh, he jsut saw me thru that wall ololol'

I have never been spotted unfairly in mgs4 like through a wall or anything. Its always me being careless. Its incredible when you're on a ledge up top of a building and a guy on the road below over 100ft away spots you because you stood up. No games do that.

On Boss Extreme they spot you in that exact situation because your camo index drops to 60%. No BS. You don't even have to crouch move.

[QUOTE="Lab392"]The AI is easy to fool in the lower difficulty levels, but definitely not in Big Boss Hard and The Boss Extreme.Phazevariance

This is so not true. I've beaten it in every single difficulty and it seems like you're playing it on normal. They would just stand there if you're not noticed though, that's a given. Why would they run around aimlessly if you're not noticed? Higher difficulties, especially big boss extreme, you would have no chance "walking up to them". Even in Big Boss hard, you can't just walk up to them without being noticed unless they're lone patrolmen and even then you must crouch walk but that's very risky. Well anyways, from what it sounds like, you only reached the first act or second act after playing it all weekend long.

The enemy AI was good, but nothing exceptional in my eyes.

I clearly stated i have yet to play it on Boss Extreme. Guess, what, this afternoon im gonna play act 1 and i'll tell you how it went. So far i didn't say the AI is BS AI, i just said common techniques used by developers to make AI looks smart. It's the same trick in every game..

Maybe you should try a harder difficulty, like THE BOSS EXTREME, for example?
