Metal Gear Solid? Hardly as powerful a franchise as some think.

MGS. Beloved by gaming enthusiasts wordwide. But how powerful is the franchise, really?

Despite being on the most popular console of all time, MGS3, the latest in the series, sold just over 4 million copies (combining snake eater and substinance). Pretty good, right? Well, putting that in perspective, a console with nowhere near the install base managed to move close to 5 million copies of Gears of War.

So if the personal Jesus Christ of the PS3's younger brother couldn't outsell Gears of War despite having many times over a potential market to sell to, what chance does MGS4 have?

MGS doesn't have much of a casual fanbase. MGS series really have a target audience of core gamers, which will definitly buy a few millions. If Konami ups the marketing and take advantage of PS3's lackluster Library, they can build a lot of Hype.

GeOW gained a lot of sales of hype from MS and stand out graphics.

If MGS isn't as popular as other franchises, does that mean MGS4 is going to be bad game? what I know is it's a game for me and many other fans of the series.

While MGS was never a "SYSTEM SELLER" it holds its own on greatness....MGSIV might never reach Halo 3 in sales, but I think it will be a better game overall...i'm already tired of Halo 3...feels too similar to Halo 2

This isn't a discussion over how good the game is going to be, frankly I don't care.

This is a discussion about the games ability to move sales, I was completely up front with this from the beginning.

MGSIV will sell because of the Hype...I've never seen so much hype for a MGS game...so I expect MGSIV to be PS3's best seller...even thought that's not saying much...

Not really, whoever I talk to (I don't go around asking people about games), but when a game conversation pops up, most people when talking about PS3 talk about Final Fantasy and GT and MGS.

I've heard it from casuals, from the hardcore, etc.

MGSIV will be huge....its one of the PS3's "SYSTEM SELLERS" (although I don't consider it so) SOny would be dumb not to advertise this game....they should throw millions at Konami to keep it exclusive and for advertising

They already have. Not to mention Kojima has philosophical reasons for sticking to the PS3 (he is one of the first to develop on the PS3 so has a pioneer spirit he wants to keep--learned that from GI). But it does pose a question. A good number of people bought 2 but only about half bought 3. Would people skip 3 and go to 4 (or buy 3 used to fill in the gap)? Thing is, we just lack the numbers to reliably answer this question one way or the other.

MGS2 sold seven million copies and it basically came out in the first year of the PS2 launch just like Gears of War for the X360. The amount of hype for MGS2 was pretty much described as "immense" and MGS4 is pretty much the same thing. For MGS3, four million copies still makes MGS3 one of the top ten best selling games on the PS2, 9th, according to wiki, i would say the hype meter didn't reach it's fullest potential but still four million copies, that's a big achievement.

you could run through big sections of mgs 2, so long as you hit a loading screen before the alarm was sounded you were safe :p

I would think a franchise is determinded by the quality games it has not the sales.

Some games like Final Fantasy were popular in lets say Japan at first. Now it has become popular world wide, if you really want to go into a discussion about sales then look at how things can change.

pretty much, i kinda got over it though, they all start out the same way,

Colonel Campbell: " Snake we have survellance of a new metal gear and we believe that ocleot is behind along with your clone rereseurrected brother liquid who has your dads eyes".

Solid Snake; " Let me guess you need me to confirm its existence and stop them from activating the new metal gear and kill ocelot and my brother, right"

Campbell; " uhhh yeah how did you know?"

Snake; " because we always use the same ploit formula"

Campbell; " umm yeah, forgot that part, but you will have some new weapons"

Naomi: Yeah new weapons i developed a teleportation device so you can go back in time and step on the test tube that created your brother.

Solid Snake: " yeah we win" drops dead from old age

credits roll

You are making an illogical arguement. What you are saying is that a series of critically acclaimed movies aren't that powerful because they sell fewer tickets than a more mainstream movie. But the question is, would you rather cater to a strong and loyal audience who knows your series, or an audience that may be jumping on a bandwagon only to jump off with the sequal?

I'm speaking purely hypothetically of course. But MGS has proven itself to be a strong and quality franchise. It just doesn't have much appeal outside of NA (like FPS) and also doesn't have a large casual following because casuals hate games with story and complexity...they just want to shoot stuff mindlessly.

You clearly have no knowledge of the franchise's history. HYPED GAMES = SAles. MGS3 wasnt' as hyped due to GTA and other bgi games on PS2. Less casual appeal. MGS2 was hyped hence it sold VERY well, somethign like 5 million+ Worldwide. MGS4 IS going to be a system seller since it's more hyped than all other MGS's put together. Get over it.

the install base that has purchased the ps3 thus far are mostly hardcore gamers that are probably also MGS fans which means the game could easily sell 2-3 million early on and eventually reach about 5-6, i still think the system seller for ps3 next year is going to be Gran Turismo and to a lesser extent final fantasy.

It just goes to show that the big sellers are the games of the mindless. Point gun, pull trigger. Metal Gear doesn't need to be "powerful" in the sales field, because the story tops everything else out there, this isn't 4 games, it's one story. 3-1-2-4. Until there is a 15-part Wheel of Time game, nothing will touch Metal Gear and Kojima-san's Brilliance. Boycotting Transformers until Paramount decides to join the world of Uncompressed Audio and Higher Definition. .

Just for the record, HD-DVD does support higher definition at film speeds (such as the aforementioned), and it supports Dolby TrueHD, which is lossless compression.
