This isn't a prediction, just an assessment of Kojima's recent track record.

Everyone (well, the Cows) assume that MGSIV is going to be high AAA at least, but I wonder... MGS3 was a game that, like IV, spared no expense. It was years in the making, had Kojima's best effort, and had pretty much everything Kojima has going into IV except for his grandstanding claims about how it could only be done on the PS3.

Well, it got me to thinking... He made MGS and it was a great (if painfully short) game. He made MGSII and it made some questionable decisions in it, but it was critically acclaimed and rated AAA here. He then spent years crafting MGS3 which was the first in the series to not get AAA here. It's obvious that sometimes this guy has "the magic" and sometimes it's not quite there, or it may be the case that he just doesn't have it any more (his games have not hit their peak since II which was, what, 2001?).

With this in mind, here is my question. Why do people assume that MGSIV is easily AAA material? What does it have that MGS3 didn't?

There was only so much he could do on the PS2 hardware to make MG3 great, you have realize that MGS 1 was great because it was the first of the PS1 generation, and MGS2 was great because it was the first of the PS2 generation. The reason MG4 will be great is because it is the first and last of the PS3 generation. Each generation of hardware can only deliver a certain level of interactivity, the PS3 opens up new levels of interactivity that previous generations could not, as did the PS2 for MGS2 and as did the PS1 for MGS1.

MG4 will become the most cinematic and immersive MGS to date, not simply due to its story but the medium delivery the story. On top of the PS3 hardware advantage MGS4 also has the emtional advantage of being the last of the MGS franchise hence the death of beloved icon. With both those advantages it is nearly impossible for MGS4 to not be a masterpiece.

You want me to start...listing....everything that MGS4 has that MGS3 doesn't? :|

That might take all night. I suggest you play MGS3, then go watch the MGS4 15 minute gameplay demo and see for yourself.

As for MGS3 not getting AAA: much of the complaint was in regards the camera and the cumbersome controls. When Kojima fixed the camera in Subsistence, MGS3 was bumped to AAA status on gamespot.

And apart from gamespot, all three MGS games are almost universally AAA among the review community. Look up gamerankings.com, all three average out to AAA.

And contrary to gamespot, most fans consider MGS3 to be a better game than MGS2. So is Kojima a hit-or-miss developer or is gamespot a hit-or-miss review site? You decide

MGS3 should be AAA here. It was a great game, much better than MGS2. There's no doubt in my mind that MGS4 will be nothing less than amazing and i honestly won't give a crap about what score GS gives it. I can't wait to play it.

It probably will get 8.5. I believe MGS3 got around that score but it did not stop people from loving the game did it?

Didn't MGS get AA here?

Anywho I couldn't care less what people give it. MGS4 will destroy 2008 and make all other games it's love slave.

MGS ROCKS!!

Even if it does, it'll still be one of the best games of the year. Metroid Prime 3, anyone?

i think that fuzzys post pretty much says it all. there were some flaws but they were corrected which means that msg3 is now an AAA title. all hideo has to do now is make sure those mistakes are not made again and another AAA title is pretty much garanteed.

This is the final game in the series, Kojima will not only put in all his effort, he will also make sure the story ties up all (or almost all) the loose ends and improve (or at least aim to improve) on MGS3's boss fights, which were already brilliant.

The first MGS not to get AAA here? Perhaps you should check the reviews again. MGS1 in particular.

mgs3 certainly deserved AAA, I believe it's still theonly game onany platform to use 3d grass(correct me if im wrong), they fixed the camera issues in MGS3 Subsistence and it scored AAA here so it was definitely AAA material, for MGS4 that standards are gonna be much higher though and I could see it not scoring AAA here so on the safe side i would have to say it would score a 9.

Cows have so much invested in this game. It really should be something to see when it finally hits stores and Gamespot reviews it. I already havehalf of my review written. Wanna see it?

Another MGS, another rambling mix of odes to soldiering and anime like uber nonsense combined with some fairly interesting (if pedestrian) commentary on the future of warfare. Gaiden is back! The most hated character in gaming returns wearing the armor of the most belovedcyber ninja since Robocop 3. Why he is back or how he is back is explained (as is most of the story) through the now done to death "the nanobots did it" explanation. Yes sir the future is nanobots and we should learn to worship our new techno-masters now if this game is to be believed.

But its not really about belief because the cyber-ninja is fighting an immortal vampire which brings us to the anime like uber nonsense...much like an anime Kojima has stuck to a strict storytelling formula that he has adhered to throughout each game barring some minor superficial changes. Snake infiltrates, Snake find out what he thinks is going on, Snake is captured, Snake escapes and finds out what's really going on, Snake fights the last boss then fights Metal Gear. Along the way he fights an identical number of mini-bosses who all wield superhuman or even supernatural powers. That this rehash has been acceptable through 4 games now is an indication of the mental acuity of its mostly pre-pubescent fanbase.

Once again the game is chock full of cutscenes which certainly have their moments but for the most part will leave you staring off at the side of the TV thinking about stuff you could be doing like getting something to eat, drink, or take a restroom break. Don't do it though! You will miss important information like what Revolver Ocelot (now named Solid Ocelot I believe) had for dinner three years ago or what clone of Solid Snake is the "real one". Aside from the ridiculous and painfully re-done story we have the gameplay.

After 3games of the worst camera in gaming (top down) Kojima has finally shipped a new MGS with a 3rd person camera. Unfortunately the stiff movements of Snake and the awkward crawling animation are intact. Like all the other MGS games (unless you wantthe dirty little easter eggs strewn about) you can pretty much run through the levels until you get to the boss encounter which requires some 8-bit era bit of pattern memorization before you can trounce them easily. Hardcore fans will be overjoyed to know Snake can now hide in barrels and roll down a hill! Which is perhaps the greatest evolution in gameplay this series has experienced since its first showing.

Ultimately this game is a sad ending to an overrated series. Final score: pending actual playtime

This is pretty much Cow double standard.

Metal Gears Solid is critically acclaimed on all sites, so therefore, MGS4 is going to get AAAA.

Yet, Halo is also critically acclaimed on all sites, but Halo sucks and will flop.

And Killzone1 was critically aclla... , but Killzone 2 will score AAA and kill Halo.

The only thing that turns me off with MGS4 is that the online portion is a seperate game. Otherwise, MGS4 looks like the first ps3 game i really want to get.

MGS IV is a likely 9+ here. It's bringing a bunch of new gameplay to the table so that should equate with a good score.

Last time I checked, the official hype thread at the top has entries like this:

"Official hype thread [NONE, but widely hyped as AA]"

Just check it out for yourself. Seems you don't need an official hype thread for a general prediction.

I agree with you TC I say from a 8.5-9.7 not a 10 but then again I think there is no game in the world to deserve a perfect score.

JiveT he's called Liquid Ocelot not Solid and I don't think you have played any game in the Metal Gear series.
