Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain made $179 million globally on its opening day, according to Adobe Digital Index’s new report on gaming trends. Compare that to the blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron, which made $84 million globally on its opening day. Yes, The Phantom Pain made almost twice as much. So, the next time someone tells you that triple-A gaming is dying, you’re allowed to laugh in their face.

Weird quote, but whatever. Konami dun goofed, they threw a fit over the game's $80 million budget only to see it make more than that in a day. Luckily, they've turned to mobile gaming, where people like @mister-man and @musicalmac will convince you that convenience trumps a great gameplay experience.

Do they account for digital sales? I got digital on Xbox One myself. I'm sure we'll be made more aware of that once it hits a major milestone during the end of the fiscal quarter or fiscal year.

Metal Gear? Not so much.

Halo 3 earned that much 8 years ago within 24 hours too AND ON A SINGLE PLATFORM. The Phantom Pain's sales figures are hardly impressive. If only fanatic cows cared as much about the series as they led you to believe...

You do realize it takes a whole lot more to break even let alone make a profit on entertainment than to just earn more than the budget?

5 platforms and thanks to the previous series MGS has arguably become more popular than ever, and it's just $179m on its opening day whereas Halo got $170m on its opening day on a SINGLE platform, 360?

You shouldn't compare to Halo in sales. Halo is a mainstream franchise while MGS is cult series.

I seriously wished this game would've flopped for them.

I want them out of the gaming industry (only making smartphone games is pretty much a synonym to me) and selling off all their IP.

The game was so close to being perfect. Think if the game was actually finished? We'll never know.

I seriously am. Who cares how many platforms its on, that makes it a top selling game and most publishers would kill to have that kind of opening day.

I'm guessing COD came close to Halo on 360, so does that make Halo 3 unimpressive?

Put it on nearly every console out there... you'll get those sales.

Is the gameplay any good? I've never been able to get into a Metal Gear game.

That's impressive but unless that's actual profit, then a lot of it will go to distributing the game.

Splatoon sold almost that on day 1 if we also count the Splatoon Amiibo like Metal Gear is counting their toy, plus Splatoon was only released on one platform. When its all said and done, ill be willing to bet Splatoon makes more profit then MGSV.

That's very impressive, and well earned too. Fine game.

Perhaps those funds could give us a potential third chapter? Unlikely, but one can dream.

I'm just gonna come right out and say it's me. In Japan, the only week that MGSV outsold Splatoon was it's opening week, and every week since Splatoon has out sold it. (any one platform vs Wii U)
I'm not knocking the game at all, I just pointed it out because people jumped down my throat when I said MGSV wasn't going to push PS4 sales like they thought it would. The game isn't selling like the monster everyone though it would. Destiny beat it in the U.S. and EU in PSN sales for the month as well. Just stating facts.

Don't get me wrong, however, I really enjoyed Ground Zeroes.

As far as I know each subsequent release in the series yielded lower sales figures. Outside of the core gaming base, barely anybody knows about the MGS series.

I guess some people had some very unrealistic expectations.

But it took far less time to make age of ultron than it did MGSV. Time is money. And Kojima wanted to delay the game further, the proof being that Konami forced him to release an unfinished game.

So they recouped their losses day one.

Game is really fun but it's a disappointment overall. It really does feel unfinished and padded. So much filler content.

I couldn't care less about Splatoton. I haven't even had the desire to put it in my Gamefly Que, since after all I'm a tried and true manticore who only deals with facts.

I consider myself a true Maticore and my resume this gen includes, Killzone Shadowfall, DriveClub, Ryse, Sunset Overdrive, Bloodborne, Splatoon, Captain Toad, Bayonetta 2, Infamous Second Son and First Light, Wonderful 101, Dead Rising 3, Pikmin 3, Forza 5 and Horizon 2, Halo MCC, The Order 1886, Super Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS all Day One. (I'm sure I missed a few as well)

I also have Uncharted 4 LCE, Halo 5 LCE and Street Fighter 5 CE pre-ordered.

ehh, maybe someday. But the last game I bought/played for Wiiu is MK. I did try the HD Wind Walker, which I got free with it but it couldn't set its hooks in me.

Glad the game sold well but disappointed deeply in it.

I wonder about these reports that mentined something about selling 5-6 millions copies to making its budget back.

That's an excellent day 1 turn around, even if we assumed that the budget for MGSV was $80 million.

And as it turns out, it's not. A Forbes article misquoted the original Nikkei article and the rest of the internet just ran with this false info. That $80 million dollar figure includes all of Kojima Productions operating costs from 2009 to early 2015. This includes development and marketing on Peace Walker, remasters and re-releases, Snake Eater 3d, Ground Zeroes, pre-production on MGR, Silent Hills, development of the Fox Engine, etc. etc.

So it would seem that Kojima is a far more efficient developer than he's given credit for, but the fact of the matter is that Konami just doesn't want to deal with AAA gaming.

I'd love to hve $179 million.

But thats not enough to impress me.....b/c I'm trite.

I wonder how that compares to that huge mobile hit they had , the one that apparently made them reconsider the console business.....I'm fuzzy on the exact details but I remember reading how they made a huge profit on this mobile game that costs them so little to make.

My point all along was 179 opening day is great and that in lifetime sales MGS V will outsell Splatoon, due to multiple platforms and larger install bases. Saying otherwise had to be pointed out, even taking into account Japan sales.

The entire comparison strikes me as asinine, personally.

It has been reported already that in order for Konami to break even they have to sell over 6/7 million copies. That is just to BREAK EVEN.

Development costs are 80 million (including other MGS titles) but that is not even the most expensive part of AAA game, marketing is. That is why Konami was pissed, 7 million by any game standards is a lot.
