Interesting choice. You would think the GOTY for PC website would be Witcher 3 considering how much better it is on PC. What do you think, SW? Do they make valid points for GOTY?

The game represents the genre as its absolute peak (that being action/stealth, for pure stealth Thief 2 is still the reigning champ). People can always cry about how the game is "unfinished", but no other game in the series or genre plays as magnificently as TPP does. It's a game that gives you so much freedom and options that each experience is entirely personalized, and if you read between the lines it's quite clear the game is about passing on the legacy to the player to make their own path and their own stories. The game's design reinforces this notion. So while the story didn't close the loop to the satisfaction of fans (because that worked oh so well with MGS4), the sense of finality honestly couldn't be more apparent.

So yeah. Well earned!

All of this. ^

Also some good write ups on their end. Even the guys first statement.

"As a friend of mine put it recently, it was always the systems that made Metal Gear special, not the story."

**** yes. So many people are so ball twisted into the MGS story that they find it alien that some of us have always seen it like this. I didn't replay MGS games dozens of times over because I liked watching cutscenes. It was always about toying with the layered systems and seeing what was possible.

MGSV takes that appeal, injects it with steroids, and straps a fucking rocket to it.

I think it's sad how so many underplay the achievements of MGS5. in terms of pure game design, MGS5 is easily the best game this year.

I don't care if it's unfinished or is overly padded, the game is something truly special. You aren't going to see something like it for years. In a generation where everything is still the same and barely evolving, we should be championing games like MGS5.

it probably didnt have graphics options.

But MGSV is the best AAA PC game that released on PC this year. I'm currently playing Witcher 3 and although im enjoying the game, I cant see it overtaking MGSV for me at this point, even considering MGSV's 2nd half.

Metal Gear Solid V's gameplay is fucking superb, so no disagreement here. Rocket League is the only other game I thought this year that belonged in an argument with MGSV, the Witcher 3's gameplay is asscheeks.

All PC Gamer has is its name, a relic of a bygone era.

Nowadays it hardly represents the platform.

Or how about the game is full of padding, poor storytelling, tonal discord, and repetitive mission design that makes UbiSoft looks like saints. It goes away from the things that actually made MGS unique and become more like every other open world game on the market. It was just another Far Creed: Watch Dogs game with a Metal Gear facelift, with better stealth mechanics than Far Cry but weaker shooting mechanics.

Hell, MGSV can't even win a fucking gamer poll....it has no reader poll wins, while TW3 dominates and FO4 and Bloodborne have won a couple.

And to a lot of hecklers dismay and dispute hype for all things western in SW, it's once again another Japanese game!

One thing that can not be denied that the best japanese games always have far superior gameplay when compared to their western counterparts.

I fully expect FFXV to be leaps of oceans better in gameplay and scope than TW3 was and still may not score as well because the general expectation for Japanese games in that area is always higher than western games. A japanese game with gameplay as wonky as Fallout or Skyrim would NEVER ever get AAA scores.

I wasn't aware the game needed an extremely bloated narrative to quality itself as an MGS game when really it's the gameplay and design which shine over everything else when it's all said and done.

Reader polls mean nothing. According to one of the biggest reader polls (GameFAQs), Undertale is the best video game ever made... According to your logic, the greatest game ever made must be Undertale. It only goes to show that popularity contests mean nothing.

There was a time when great gameplay was all you needed to win GOTY. But nowadays, you don't even need great gameplay to win GOTY, but they instead prioritize story and production values above gameplay... PC Gamer made the right choice by going against the grain and awarding GOTY to a game that actually had some of the best gameplay this year.

I admire you fortitude in finishing it once. The demo told me everything I needed to know about it's quality. Funniest thing is it's never made PC Gamer's "The best RPGs of all time" list. So much for "The best RPG combat ever" and "Darker, sexier, better."

Sunshine it's an interactive medium, if the interacting with the game part is a short coming, you fucked up. The Witcher 3 is plenty rad, but no, it doesn't overcome that combat for me. So you want to play the "mroe than the sum of its parts" fine, play that game, but understand whatever beef you have with MGSV's plot (and it's shit, I'm not disagreeing), mine isn't less valid for thinking Witcher 3's combat is pathetic.

Because it rarely presents scenarios that can overcome that combat in terms of gameplay, and gameplay is the most important element of a video game. It's not even close.

Undertale is awesome and one of the best games of the year. Second, Undertale only wins one poll, and really Rocket League is a more popular game overall.

Game of the Years have always been complete experiences. The game has to be the sum of its parts. MGSV is not, that's why TW3 is to destroying it.

And I'm supposed to give a shit about this because...?

You want to criticize the game about repetitive mission design when A. the bulk of the story missions are actually pretty varied and B. you're given more than enough tools and options to ensure the experience doesn't stay repetitive. This is a title where the issue of repetition falls entirely on the player and their lack of creativity and/or imagination. The one area where the game is guilty of padding is in the side-ops, and even then you can always choose to not do them.

As for the storytelling, I really don't care because the series has always had a poor narrative. The mission variety is still less varied than "Far Creed: Watch Dogs". It feels cut and paste. Nevermind that some missions are terrible and lets not get started on the boss fights. And "Far Creed" has better side missions than MGSV's side ops.

Main missions? no they aren't, at all, not even close. It's one of the biggest short comings of a modern Ubisoft game. You are correct in saying they handle side content a bit better, but in both cases the flaw is quite similar: it's fucking bloated.

It was my first MGS experience, and a great one at that. Very deserving of GOTY, though it has been a great year overall for games, there are many others I would have accepted as GOTY as well.

The one area where the game is guilty of padding is in the side-ops, and even then you can always choose to not do them.

As for the storytelling, I really don't care because the series has always had a poor narrative. At least MGSV doesn't shove it down your throat and (seldomly) carries powerful story moments that have a true sense of player agency reinforcing them. Everything about how the gameplay is designed screams out Metal Gear with the way it mixes the gritty nature of the scenarios with downright slapstick style stealth mechanics that the series is known for. I wasn't aware the game needed an extremely bloated narrative to quality itself as an MGS game when really it's the gameplay and design which shine over everything else when it's all said and done.

The mission variety is still less varied than "Far Creed: Watch Dogs".

Main missions? no they aren't, at all, not even close. It's one of the biggest short comings of a modern Ubisoft game. You are correct in saying they handle side content a bit better, but in both cases the flaw is quite similar: it's fucking bloated.

Far Cry 3 and 4 and Assassins Creed games have pretty varied main missions, more so than MGSV. Its not even close.

And this is coming from someone sick of UbiSoft's formula.

I rarely visited the site after finding out DA2 was an incomplete dumbed down shit. I couldn't even play it a second time.

I admire you fortitude in finishing it once. The demo told me everything I needed to know about it's quality. Funniest thing is it's never made PC Gamer's "The best RPGs of all time" list. So much for "The best RPG combat ever" and "Darker, sexier, better."

I thought the class balance was far more enjoyable for warriors and rogues.. The balance in Dragon Age Origins was absolute crap with the rogue and warrior being incredibly behind in viability, choices, and overall power compared to the mage class... That is the one thing I felt it did right.. And attempting to fix the incredibly dumb combat system of the first.. Real time with pause needs to die in a fiery pit.. It has never been effective nor very good.. The fact people use Baldur's Gate 2 as a example of it's success makes me shake my head.. BG2 is a amazing game but the actual combat system was absolute balls with tremendous dumbing down from the second edition ruleset (Dragon fights for instance are a huge example of that) and absolutely awful class balance with classes like Shapeshifter being god awful..

MGSV: Phantom Pain is the best game of 2015 and the generation so far... So no surprised. Well deserved win.
