Oh dear.
tbh we already knew all 360's are faulty...you don't get 30% odd defect rate unless something is broken...the only thing I am surprised about is that CNN and BBC haven;t reported on this yet...while this random unheard of website reports...no other website on the internet thats trusted by the mainstream is saying this.
I am nto denying its defective...I know its defective
I can almost guarantee you there's a class action lawsuit in the oven. Even my friend is threatening to sue LOLDualshockin
Like I said, time and again, THERE IS ALREADY LAWSUITS AGAINST MS. There has been since almost launch of the 360. At least MS has owned up to the problem and is fixing it on their dime.

The BBC have already covered this, twice in fact. First in their primetime programme 'Watchdog', and again more recently in their main news.
At any rate, the problem seems to be that when a game pushes the processor, it overheats and melts the solder wire connecting it, wrecking the console. Apparently Gears of War was the first game to really do this. So that means the more 'next-gen' the game, the higher the chance of the console dying are. How about Halo 3? That will surely push the machine, and it will also be the biggest selling/most widespread game in the machines history. Can you say mass disaster waiting to happen?
Even then, if it doesn't, by 2009 the amount of high-end 'next gen' titles will be in overdrive - that is if they want to keep up with the PS3. Now add to this the fact they aren't enforcing a recall, but only an extended warranty - and you can see they're just making a short term fix.
This is only going to get worse, much worse.

It really does not matter what game you are playing, but the environment that the console is in that determines if there is going to be an issue with it.

Now,when a company admits the hardware they are selling is faulty, what do you think will happen?

Is this a trick question? They are legally required to fix the defective items at their costs, and if there is a safety issue (which there is not) they are required to issue a product recall. MS is already fixing the issues for free.

Has every 360 red ringed? Answer is no, so I would say that the environment plays a pretty big role, as does playing habits.

But even then, this is just the legal side of the discussion. Even if they do get away with it legally, nobody wants to buy something that's almost guaranteed to break. You have to take into consideration publicity and a fast emerging PS3.

Actually, no its not. There was a design/manufacturing issue with the systems. A fix was put into place when it was discovered, and they are repairing the defective units for free. That is not being "above" the law. That is a company that made hardware that had a flaw and is now fixing it.
I love how you just jump to "above the law" and make them out to be malicious. Issue was found, issue was fixed, and MS is fixing affected consoles at no cost to consumers. Its not about being above anything.
And as for the other post, most publicity outside hardcore gamesites/gamers is generally positive from this, as MS has admitted issue and is fixing them, not to mention that the issue was fixed in new units, and a three year warranty is unheard of in game systems.

You dodged my question. Has every 360 red ringed? Last I heard from the speculation was 30%. That means that 70% have had no issues. Even if they all share the heating flaw, the amount of play and the environment play parts in the red ring. They are collectively refered to as contibuting factors.

Yes it would. This is not a recal. When your system breaks they fix it big difference. There is no question about it. In four years people's 360's will break because of this design flaw and then there is no outlet to get your system fixed.

Ok, learn what a recall is for. A recall is for a safety related issue. Your system that stops working is only a safety issue if you throw it at someone.
Microsoft is fixing issues as they come up, and has fixed the issue in new systems. There is not much more than can or should do. The problem is being handled, very professionally, and that is the end of the story.
And no, if you are going to get the red rings, it sure won't take 4 years for it to happen, and I would know, as I have had them. A few times.
And as all you PS fans crow about lawsuits and shame on MS, you forget that the PS2 was also the subject of a rather large class-action lawsuit due the their own design flaws. No company is immune from flaws. Its how they handle them that matters, and MS is handling them quite well, in most people's opinions.

Microsoft has admitted that every one of the 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in the past 19 months suffers from a design flaw that could cause the device to fail.
And you could read where it says could. No where does it say every system would fail. Could.
My goodness people have terrible comprehension on System Wars. That's why I'm going to bold my next sentence.
NOT ALL 360s ARE DEFECTIVE. ALL 360s HAVE A DESIGN FLAW WHICH COULD MAKE THEM BECOME DEFECTIVE.
This doesn't mean the 360 will have a 100% failure rate, the sad thing is, this is like the 5th topic in the past few days this has had to be pointed out.
As for those who are calling for class action lawsuits, that's never going to happen. Microsoft has yielded by extending the warranty for all consoles to 3 years within purchase. What more could feesibly be gained by legal action?

Read this carefully:
Every early Playstation 2 had the same design flaw. They used plastic tracks for the optical laser, which, over time with usage could warp, causing the dreaded disc read error
Now, did every PS2 have disc read errors? No, they didn't. But every PS2 sold in the first year at least had the same design flaw.
Like I said, just because the 360s share the flaw does not mean that they will break, just like not every PS2 had disc read errors.
And did Sony start a recall...

It means that all the systems have the potential to break plain and simple. It means that in three years and there are still systems having problems Microsoft will be sued.

It seems like MS is handling the issue as well as they can, what with the whole extended warranty dealy. But the problem is that they really need to tell 360 owners that 1) there is a problem, and 2) what it is, instead of leaving them in the dark.Funkyhamster
The issue is with the thermal design and heat disipation within the units. They have said what the issue is. They just have not pinpointed exactly what part/parts are at issue with it.

Granted the PS2 had a high failure rate but it wasn't anywhere close to how bad the 360's are. Virtually everyone I know who owns a 360 has had it break. There are plenty of stories about the same persons 360 breaking 3 or 4 times.

Except that they have said that not everyone will break. Having a flaw and being defective are two different things. Everyone lumps them together, but they are not the same thing. Seriously, they aren't.

All systems have a potential to break anyway, the 360 just has a higher likelyhood. Doesn't mean 100% are defective.
And yes, your probably right, in 3 years if Microsoft still has 360s failing right and left out of warranty, they probably will be sued. But the Red Rings of Death have proven themselves to be, if anything, a quick acting issue.

Mine has died a few time, but of my 5 IRL friends with 360s, I am the only one who has had any issues with freezing or red rings.
And to say that the PS2s errors were excusable while condemning the 360 for them is plain hypocritical anyway you look at it.
I called both companies on it, and while Sony ignored the issue til forced by a lawsuit to legally do something, at least MS has stood up and said there is an issue and they are fixing it and making it right.

You can't really say that, because anecdotes aren't a great way to measure failure rates. Honestly, we don't know how the 360's failure rate stacks up against the PS2's failure rate.

Wrong, wrong wrong.
They did not sell the product with full knowledge that it had a defect, they sold it with (now knowledge) that it has a flaw. Not every console will be rendered useless.

First, there aren't 11 million red ringed consoles. So that "fact" of yours is just wrong. And no, Sony did not fix the problems with the PS2 quickly. It lasted from 2000 til 2003 at least. In fact, they didn't even really admit that there was an issue. They just quietly instituted a free repair program until 2005 after they settled the class action lawsuit.

Now, did every PS2 have disc read errors? No, they didn't. But every PS2 sold in the first year at least had the same design flaw.
Like I said, just because the 360s share the flaw does not mean that they will break, just like not every PS2 had disc read errors.
And did Sony start a recall...
wait a minute the disc read error wasnt even close to 11 million mather infact it didnt even hit the 1 million andit was resolved fast...
microsoft has a 19 months problem 11 milion users you cant fix that in 1 fingersnap
if i had a xbox360 and readed this storyno doubt i would scream for a new box i didnt pay a boxwith a flawwhat if this news comes across the world microsoft could be in big trouble..
All early PS2's had the same flaw. Only 1 million or so are defective. You seem to once again be failing comprehension. There is a difference between a design flaw and a defective console, they aren't synonyms, the former causes the latter, the latter is not an absolute outcome of the former.
It is almost the exact same situation the PS2 was having early on.

if you put your xbox360 in a freezer and play it wont fail that fast but what if you play it under a pillow ?
thats teh difference some people etleast most of them ventilate the box properly but that wont matter soon because games getting more processing intesive which means more heat and more heat means more chance of a failure.... and with the summer you really need to put your box inside a -30 freezer

First, there aren't 11 million red ringed consoles. So that "fact" of yours is just wrong. And no, Sony did not fix the problems with the PS2 quickly. It lasted from 2000 til 2003 at least. In fact, they didn't even really admit that there was an issue. They just quietly instituted a free repair program until 2005 after they settled the class action lawsuit.
where did i say 11 mil red ringed ? no where
the problem is there is a chance, i cant standthe the fact that some guys are defending this flaw it feels liek some people sit next to their box and say to themself i hope you wont fail on me and praying......
THATS NOT ACCEPTABLE i wanna feel good about my system without knowing that there is a chance of exploding i would go to microsoft with the box and demand a new one...

No one is defending the flaw! It's bad, it shouldn't have happened, Microsoft deserve to lose the money they've spent from this.
What people are arguing against is the claims that 100% of 360s are defective. That's not true.

Funny, I remember lots of people having to hope their PS2s didn't get a disc read error either...(mine eventually did)
And I like how everyone says the 360s will explode, since that makes them seem that much more dangerous. They don't explode. They don't catch fire. When they red ring, they just stop working.

Exactly. I was p***ed off each time my 360 died, and I was vocal about it. It still makes me mad that there is such an issue. But MS manned up, admitted and fixed the problem in new boxes, and is doing what they can to make it right to people who have had these issues.
Its terrible that the system had a flaw. But they have fixed it (so they claim) and they have spend tons of their money making it right, and I respect that from them.
