Rumors are starting to fly around as Apple's new iTV entertainment machine starts getting close to an announcement. Apple TV hasn't really caught on to the mainstream compared to other Apple products, howvever Apple is on the works to switch that around.

The new machine will have things like Siri-powered voice commands, so you can view and navigate with your voice being the controller. In addition, the iTV is rumored to feature a body-gesture recognition system that is picked up using a camera. Your body is the controller. Sounds familiar? Well duh, this is exactly what Microsoft is trying to do with Kinect and Xbox.

Although, so far not officially confirmed as a gaming system, the Apple is already making their moves in the living room market that Microsoft and Sony are trying to do with their consoles.

Analysts however are prediciting that the iTV could be Apple's step into the living room video game market.

"Jeffries analyst Peter Misek said an analysis of Apple's patents suggests its iTV product will likely be interoperable with mobile devices, while also functioning as a gaming platform."

And with consoles expected to not be so powerful this next-generation. Apple can easily add the sufficient hardware to make the iTV, a gaming platform and an overall entertainment center. Apple also has a huge brand name following. How much would that change the gaming industry? It pretty much revolutionized the mobile market. Could be big.

I see... I definitely came into this thread hoping that Queen or the Village People were releasing video games.

I don't see them ever getting into gaming.

As for Apple as a whole, once Jobs was gone, that company's living on borrowed time and I wouldn't get anything they produce.

Yeah we know, Apple entered the market before? But they weren't as strong back then as they are now. There Mac computers were almost dead back then, look what happen now? One of the biggest computer sellers in the world.

I'm starting to buy more and more into the concept of the iTV, although I'm far from committing to the product. iTV has to garner the right games and provide the right environment (i.e. one that supports traditional gaming methods) before I'd ever pick one up. And only in that circumstance, my consoles handle my media just fine as is and I have no need for apps to run through my television.

Yeah, they'd probably have to change it because ITV is a major TV channel in the UK.

Companies have done that multiple times in the past when releasing material in Europe.

You honestly think that they will stand a chance in the gaming industry with the way they overcharge their products? LOL, I don't think so.

Look at systems like PS3 & 3DO. Systems like those were priced at $600 or $700 & companies like Sony & Panasonic thought they could get away with higher system prices because they thought that people would instantly eat them up because of their brand name alone. But that wounded up backfiring at them. Same thing will happen to Apple.

Same thing was said with the iPhone. Cisco owned the naming rights to that. Guess what? They made a deal. =p They made the deal after Apple announced that they were calling it the iPhone.

The only thing they overprice are their computers. The iPhone, iPad, and iPod are priced pretty fairly.

Even with overpriced computers, they are still one of the top computer sellers.

Naming rights isn't the same as having it be the name of a major TV channel.

That's like if Apple wanted to create a system called the "Apple NBC" or the "Apple CBS" in the US.

It's just too identifiable with a major brand for a deal to be made.

All depends on the corporate pitch. Say the iTV does include a kinect-like functionality and assume the obvious product charm it will have with all of the whiz-bang elements of Siri and iOS applications. I'm just going to assume you label the price at $1500 for a 42" set, as was rumored in the Best Buy questionairre a few days back. You own a 42" TV (how much does it cost you separate), a game machine (obviously this is tricky since it depends on the capability, but even assume it has something comparable to an HD Wii), a kinect accessory ($100-$150, depending on when you bought it), and a media center (we'll say the price of that is included with the game machine element). Add it all up and you're getting pretty close to that number already. Plus, we have no idea what kind of MSRP Apple is going to put on games it releases for its system so if they do try to sell for less using DD as their model (via AppStore), Apple at least has a position to pitch to consumers.

Like with all things game related, it always comes down to the content. The amount of people who buy iPhones, iPads, and iPods for their game content is comparitively tiny when stood against the likes of MS, Sony, and Nintendo. That's the rub, but I don't see any reason why they couldn't attract the likes of major third party publishers like Ubisoft, EA, Square-Enix, THQ, etc.. There is an opportunity for Apple to sidestep its way into the game market; it's not necessarily about bursting onto the scene and dominating the competition. At least there's an angle for them with this approach.

Yeah, I remember this thing being mentioned in some game mag as a "worthy" upcomming competitor against PSX (aka PS1) and N64 :P

It was a disaster in sales as well as games and graphics (best game for it was Super Marathon which is free on the PC and MAC now).

That's what you get for turning a MAC computer into a expensive (599 US dollars!) and underpowered console :P

But it's also important to note that was an early try and Apple surely got experience since then.

They wouldn't launch a direct competitor to Microsoft's, Sony's and Nintendo's consoles anyway.

this is a completely diffrent ballgame all together.

ITV's been around for least 50 years now, it's always been called that and it would be confusing to some of the older generations if there was a product such as iTV.

Sounds silly but if someone says ITV to me i usually think tele channel and always will.

They can easily workout a deal. iTV is only in United Kingdom as I know off. One small country, three if being traditional, compared to the rest of the world? We shall see.

i dont think your getting the point at all.

ITV is one of the main 3 terrestrial broadcasters in the UK, doubt they are gonna shift for apple, not to mention the confusion. If you lived in the UK you'd easily understand what i meant.

this is one of the new things that i have been poking fun at lately because one of my friends was trying to describe some apple problem to me he was having and it was all lion this and snow leopard that and it just struck me as funny.

like apple is so user friendly they can't make up some names that make any logical sense or have a string of numbers that i at least know in the space of a second what order they came out in.

apple has to be so friendly and unintimidating to the masses shyt has to be named fuzzy jungle cat and friendly squirrel or some silly shyt like that.

it is probably not as funny to you guys that knew this was going on as to me that just found out about it.

as he was naming zoo animal operating systems i could not help but be cracked up at the absurdity of it all.

Wut? :|

iPhones, Touches, and iPads are all very competitively priced compared to their competition. Even Macbook Airs are competitively priced to their emerging ultrabook competition. It's not 2005, and that argument holds little weight these days.

IF they do enter the console market, I dont expect the machine to be anything like the current consoles. It will be crappy $10 games, all the way. Things you buy for five minutes entertainment rather than 5 days. I dont see them investing in studios to deliver games to consoles, and I dont see them selling well either, resulting in devs staying away. That being said, if anyone can sell a brand new product to millions of people, then it is Apple. They have the best marketing in the world.

They are not going to directly enter the game industry. Much like the iPhone/Touch and iPad, it's going to be a general purpose electronic (in this case a TV), that can do gaming in addition to the other functions such as primarily being a TV.

And honestly this isn't too different than the Smart TVs that are already out there, except for a few things.

Exclusives, exclusives, xlusives.

Price, price, price.

Both will suck ass if Apple enters the console race and they know it.

Because the big 3 have tons of of iconic franchises that are hard to be replaced for a looooong time and Apple can not afford something similar to compete.

Plus if it's a TV Apple is offering it would be an expensive one, I mean if you take into account the average TV size for gaming or one for the living room, the cheapest 42" tv is around the $800 , let alone a TV of that size that also plays games, and if it's a box it would still be expensive, look at the iPad price and that's a tablet.

I wish consoles (MS,Sony, NIntendo) would go away and instead be more like DVD players that it didn't matter what brand it was it would just play on any system
