Oop.

Microsoft is announcing its biggest ever job cuts today, affecting 18,000 employees. In a memo, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the company will cut 18,000 positions in the next year, with former Nokia employees expected to account for around 12,500 jobs.

The cuts follow a recent memo from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, outlining a big shakeup for the software maker and plans to reshape the core of what Microsoft is. Nadella also dropped the devices and services moniker, opting for a focus on cloud and mobile for the future of Microsoft. In an interview with The Verge, Nadella talked about a need to increase Microsoft’s tablet share, and he also explained why he believes Google and Apple haven’t won’t yet. “I absolutely believe that in a world where there are going to be many screen sizes, and ecosystems across all of those screen sizes, and cloud services that'll be available on all ecosystems, that's what Microsoft's future is.”

http://www.theverge.com/2014/7/17/59...-job-cuts-2014

edit:

The job losses could be announced as early as this week, and will "probably" come from the Nokia unit and other divisions of Microsoft that overlap with that business, the report says. Marketing and engineering jobs will also be cut, including marketing positions at Microsoft's Xbox division, according to Bloomberg.

It's even worse than we thought. I feel sorry for those losing their jobs.

I thought lems said MS said is too rich to cut jobs. 12500 from Nokia and 5500 from MS, this is a disaster.

Poor Nokia, murdered by Lemming King Stephen Elop.

Wonder how many of the chopped will be Xbox personnel when the dust settles. They've already started with Rare.

For a company that is trying to not be in last place year after year it seems as though a shake up is needed. Another copy of Sony it seems. Ms layed off about 5500 employees while Sony layed off about 5000 a couple months ago. Next might be the window stores

The people here are idiots, reacting without taking the time to realize what they are reacting to. Microsoft may be cutting 15% of its workforce, but does it actually effect the Xbox division? It is looking like the majority will be to the mobile division.

Nice try, but that means this reduction won't top the 2009 one where 5,900 MS employees were made redundant.

Regardless, as I've said earlier the same happened with the Sony layoffs. We had no idea back then on whether the would affect the PS4 (or PS3 or Vita). Now we know they made no difference in that sector, but back then lems don't shy away from claiming gloom and doom :P Fair game brah, fair game.

Lol well said.

Just gotta wait for the usual lot to wake up and find this now so this topic can start getting fun.

the fact that there have been 2 reductions in such a short time is not good, and the fact that there has been an even worse one doesn't mean this one stops being a pretty bad one too.

I never feel sorry for people who lose their jobs in the entertainment/software/technology industry, because they will always get hired by another company, sometimes better than the last. There is a lot of demand for these guys.

First time in at least 10-15 yrs that MS appears serious about changing its business and internal culture to focus on innovation and speed to market. Very happy to see that they are also going to wipe out a whole bunch of middle management in an attempt to flatten the business hierarchy.

The people who will be hardest hit are the thousands of Finns on the low end of the skill curve in manufacturing. On the other hand, they have already had a year to find new employment and it looks like they will have another 6 months or so.

Terrible, but expected. MS acquired three companies in the last year, the biggest being Nokia and its 30,000 employees. Restructuring was going to happen no matter what. Sucks like crazy though, but such is big business. MS is doing so well due to making smart decisions at the right time, tough as they may be, before all hell breaks loose and you have no choice.

At least knowing nearly half a year in advance will help those who lost their job be able to search for new employment and plan ahead. At least there's that.

Over the past few days I feel like SW has a hard time understanding what these cuts are about. When you have a large merger of course you're going to have redundant positions because you have multiple people doing the same job.

I guess you missed this part. Nokia employees expected to account for around 12,500 jobs.

The bought Nokia out and now they are getting rip of the employee they won't need because Microsoft already has a mobile phone division with 1000's of workers. The rest of the people are engineers and marketing people that are no longer needed. They aren't selling building or stocks like Sony did. They aren't losing any money and still making billions every year. How is that "empire crumbling down"? You are completely clueless, but everyone already knows that.

These layoffs are not because of financial duress on MS's part, they are because of a merger. Not at all the same thing.
