But, looks like MS may be shutting down teh TV studio, so egg on my face that there are more layoffs than can be attibuted to the Nokia merger.

Layoffs because of mergers is quite different than layoffs because of lack of capital. That's not whining, that is fact.

MS did have a large influx of Nokia employees, 30,000 of them, and they didn't even get rid of nearly half of them. Unlike Sony, MS isn't cutting down out of fiscal desperation.

Fair play to you. When you're wrong you're wrong. Most people here spin and move goal posts. Sucks that people lose their jobs, but like I said about Sony layoffs, hard decisions have to be made.

In not all circunstances you can really say that they "had" to. Some companies just downsize in order to increase profits, not to save a dying company. In regards to Nokia though, I think it was necessary. Can't really say the same is true in relation to the MS departments affected (would have to get more information on it to know).

Big layoffs everywhere, HP plan to layoff 27k, Barclays 19k, Sony has laid off about 6.5k this year so far.

@I_can_haz: I wish people would get a better understanding of how businesses work. Just because jobs are cut, does not necessarily mean the company is doing BAD. First off, they just acquired a device division of a company, in which MS also has a device division where doubling up of positions are now created. Therefore, layoffs are necessary. You aren't going to pay two people to do one job. Secondly, Satya is the new CEO, usually when a new CEO comes in its now HIS vision, not the predecessor's vision that is going to be used moving forward on the strategic plan for the company. Hence, why the entertainment portion is being shut down. Why? Not because they can't afford it or because it is doing so horrible, but because the new CEO and brass that are in place feel it probably isn't going to help them in where they see the XBOX brand going forward in the future. This is how business works.

So the curse of MS continues, i feel bad for the nokia folk who were prob told before the buyout that MS have big plans for them and that their jobs will be safe under the huge MS umbrella then suddently the rug is yanked out from under them and they're on their ass.

Layoff are layoff it doesn't matter how they happen,it is say that 12,500 are from Nokia once MS bough Nokia those are MS employees,and 5,500 from MS including people from their gaming division,so yeah is not peaches and cream for MS as some of you always think,the xbox one is giving MS losses and MS is covering them with Android money from patents,which now is shaking as well since it is been say that many of those patents will be challenge now that MS got them from nokia,this may be a damage control before the storm start.

Read the news MS may loose its android patent shield which is what is covering the xbox hole now,they have to save money some way because investors are already not to happy with the xbox brand.
