Its not MS fault that they have to have these policies its all the stupid people who think they can make a quick money by suing anyone they can. If they let people use the word gay in their name they couldn't guarantee that every name they check isn't offensive. It might be something that sound innocent enough like GayMark but later find out that its used as a offensive term (made up insult) in a small country they never checked. Then they would leave themselves open for being sued.

MS would havejust deceided to not risk using certin words.

The choice to use the name Ballad of Gay Tony would have been Rockstars so they would be liable if someone took offence to it. Even if MS got sued for putting it on there system then they would counter sue Rockstar.

simple question is why do you want too have your sexuality etc in your name or profile? people usualy do it to prove a point, shove in in peoples face to too annoy people, and i cant stress how much i dislke speciality groups with thier own race, gender only etc, they allways end up being worse then the problem there trying to solve

I don't get it either. It's like they're prejudice over someone's sexuality. You know, like only CERTAIN kinds of people are allowed to play videogames.:( It disgusts me, really. Try that crap at a workplace, and you'd be sued.

Then anything can fall under that due to innuendo - which is all based upon an individuals interpretation. Its very flawed.

Who really read the rules when they sign up to xbox live and PSN. I know i dont. There could be a clause at the end of the MS and Sony rules say "When you agree to our standard term you sell your soul to Sony." but i would never know about it.

That's the characters name. Names like that aren't completely unheard of in crime stories about the underworld. It isn't bashing or offensive unless you want to go out of your way to make it that way.

user gamertags and game titles are two very different things. it's not an unusual thing at all to have seperate community rules and feature rules.

I say no...The word here is used to state that a male loves other males If the name was used in a gametag than it would also be used has an insult by many. There is a huge different there. Plus finding love of kind should not be taking place over live. HarlockJC

No there isn't. You don't need such words to offend anyone. It's just a moral matter that make sites like GS forbid those kinds of words in the TOS. I really don't need to call such words to offend anyone, and it's even more offending when you do it that way.

Agreed. Everything about microsoft is corrupt I.E Vista.

They should stick to making crappy software, not hardware.

imaps3fanboy
i agree they should stick to software, but have you tried any windows BESIDES vista? vista's the only bad one. windows 7 and xp are both great. but ya, microsoft assembling cheap hardware purely from other people's materials and selling it as their own, AND having it break more often than not is stupid.

I agree. I mean, it sucks for those who would want to use it in a respectful way, but more times than not, I bet people would use it in an offensive way so it's best for Microsoft to avoid that possibility all together.

Tony is probably a homosexual character, so he's G a y

thats just the title, made by rockstar. it isn't a negative thing. sure he could be a stereotype, but thats just what some real world g a y people may be like, since stereotypes are always based on something that is factual

and i don't think Rockstar is using it in a deragetory way, as most XBL users are (maybe they just need to get out of their headset and see which side they want to play for before they start spewing epithets with no remorse)

I agree. It incites hate, it not only bothers the person whos name has the word in it but everyone who may be playing with them because I could guarantee that almost every match that Gay Whatever enters there would be endless flames and I don't like hearing some idiotic 12 year old bashing someone for their sexual preference, and how do you avoid it? You censor words and make it so people can't have the words gay or **** whatever in their name.

I see. So more often than not the word gay will be used in an insulting manner when used in a gamertag and profile, but Microsoft can make sure if a developer is using the word as a title for their game, they can make sure its not used offensively. Makes sense.

Eh, I seriously have no issues here I suppose. It's because of the community, who reports these people and take offense, that MS takes action. If people on LIVE didn't have any issues, this wouldn't happen. Don't blame MS entirely, blame the users on LIVE for this. MS enacts upon the issue because users report this mess and thus MS HAS to take action to appease the larger majority. Now there are perhaps some stories where it could seem broken, but hey if a guy has some straight Tag, report him and say "That's offensive" or whatever you want. See if that turns around to anything, you know?

How are they being hypocrites? They just don't want to deal with said person with that certain gamer tag contacting them every 10 mins because some 12 year old has offended him/her again.

I see no problem with MS actions, it was rockstars choice to have the name gay tony. Which has direct levance to the game. Besides, sexuality shouldn't have to be discussed in gaming to begin with at all. You don't see poeple called, HeterosexualTED. I'm homosexual, do you see me with a flamboyant name and have a bio where i discuss men the whole damn time. I don't think so. This is just another thread to bash MS as usual.

take it easy man.. it's actually very simple.. parental controls filter such content for kids. however, it does not filter gamertag names. Hence the reason to ban those names when it comes to gamertags.

a human MS policy enforcement employee personally reviews every tag and bio complaint filed.Inbred_Coconuts
Not entirely true. The suspensions handed out as a result of filed complaints and submitted player reviews are actually done through a system/machine, and not by employees at all. To answer your entire post, TC: yes, I do also feel that Microsoft is being hypocritical amidst this whole Gay Tony business, but I don't mind it all that much. Oh please; as if their customers really matter more to them than millions of dollars.

There is no reason to include sexual references or innuendo or preferences in your online GAMING tag.

On live most of them will eventually be changed or banned. MS has a report "offensive" gamer tag option for a reason.

See something that offends you? Report.

Thank god they ban the word gay And anal intruder69, or whatever crazy nonsense that may offend someone. Xbox live is not a place where you have freedom of speech. Much like this forum. It's a good policy. People try way to hard to find fault with MS. Or Sony. Or Nintendo with this kind of stuff.

When your product appeals to a diverse audience as it does, it would be foolish to allow potentially offensive community interactions. Regardless of how "innocent", or "harmless" the intentions are. It's a CYA policy. It's necessary and good business sense on their end to play content police with all the immature people out there on both ends. The people who try to be funny and offensive, and the easily offended.

The people who are angry about this are irrational.

There are plenty of places online, and in life you can talk about your sexuality. When you're playing games online with a big cross section of people, beliefs and ages it's not wanted, or necessary.

In regards to Gay Tony: Rockstar named the game. Not MS. If it offends you, you probably won't buy it in the first place. MS has no real reason to censor it. Though if they did, I would understand.

Its not allowed in gamertags becuase some people might use the word offensively, immature but there are people who do that =S

Its allowed in the title of a game becuase its not really offensive.

Is this really a big deal? Are you ******* me? Also no one gives a **** what your orientation is so leave it out of your gamertag :|Juggernaut140

I have to agree with this, its a damn good point. Leave this stuff out of online gaming. Both straight and gay references should be banned from online gaming (tags and bio). Its not the place for this stuff. Its none of anyones business to know and its not something that should really have any need to be communicated.

Playing a single player game in reference to gay/straight romance of any nature, I see as a separate issue because it doesn't contain the same problems.

But this is purely about the context in which the use of the word gay is used. I don't think MS want to stop developers doing what they want, but I bet they did talk about it and there is probably a reason it was allowed.

But they are aware of how immature a lot of online players are with regards to racism/sexism and sexuality and I kind of agree, considering how homophobic a lot of people can be, its not worth the trouble, especially considering this information doesn't need to be communicated.

A persons race and sex is something that doesn't need to be hidden, yet their is NO need to know about someones sexual orientation. People say they are gay/straight and make other comments about that part of their lives. It may also lead to all sorts of unneeded bullying or pervy nonsense going on. Its just safer for all concerned if its not known. It should still be child friendly and that means leaving out this stuff.

But not allowing this stuff in Home actually seems worse, because that is supposed to be a social networking 3D game of sorts with some freedom in it.

Gay is not offensive. But someone who declares to the world his/her sexual orientation through his/her gamertag, faces huge chances of being ridiculed. This is the Xbox community, you know. Not always the most mature bunch of gamers on there. Game characters can be ridiculed all they want without any chance of abuse lawsuits.

Teh what? If someone wants to show pride in who they are, a person who gets crap from people just for that reason, they SHOULD be able to do so. As the TC said, MS' people should be able to take context into account and see whether the name is purely for bashing that group or if its done out of pride. If morons want to bash that person, THEY should be banned. The person chose to use that name, so they know they will get crap from morons, its their choice. And what the TC is saying about the GTA DLC, is that if MS' stance on using the term gay will incite e-riots, why in the hell would they let a game title on their system with gay in the title? It goes against their whole thought/explanation.
