Gizmodo has an exclusive interview with Microsoft CEO's Steve Ballmer going up in full this Friday. Until then, they're releasing little clips from the interview and the one they have up right now sees the CEO talking about Natal, and more importantly, a Blu-ray add-on accessory for the Xbox 360.

Gizmodo asked the Steve Ballmer on whether we'll see any Xbox 360s with a Blu-ray drive to which Ballmer replied by stating that "you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories." No time frame is given for when we'll see this Blu-ray accessory and Xbox spokespeople avoided answering the question when Gizmodo pressed for further information.

So after all this time, a Blu-ray accessory is coming to the Xbox 360. Neato? I don't know about you, but I'm just going to sit back and watch as the entire Internet collapses from the fanboy war that's about to unfold.

Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the Microsoft Empire and its xbox last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.

Though I must say, it would be quite hilarious if yet another different format starts to be used by Sony next gen. (Though that's obviously not going to happen)

I'll believe it when I see it. Ballmer's been known to get ahead of himself, and it's hard to imagine MS bringing out a BR add-on when they already have 1080p streaming (I know HD streaming isn't as high quality as BR, but 99% of people can't tell the difference).

There will be blu ray drive accessories for the 360 guaranteed, but there won't be any gaming applications.

with 1080p streaming coming, i doubt it will be an add on player like the HDDVD thingy. MS has always said DD was the future, which is what the guy said. He didnt say that there would be an add on, watch the video again............

People are making far too much of this. Not only do Sony and Microsoft use each other's products all the time (which operating system do you think Sony Vaio's run?). Sony isn't even the predominant owner of Blu-ray technology. Blu-ray was developed by a consortium that currently has 19 other major members. Fanboys transpose their own personal hangups on companies far too often.

A "blu-ray accessory". MS better have have the blu-ray come with the 360. Because paying for a legitamate 360 (you know, one with a hard drive) and buying an accessory would be more costlier than just getting a PS3

Sony coughing up money or Microsoft? I think Sony would benefit more since blu-ray is loosing to DVD by a large margin.

Bingo. You got it. Look at how MS over charges for their harddrives. That'll tip you off at how these accessories will be priced. As it stands, a 360 is more expensive than a stock PS3 once all upgrades have been bought to bring it up to par with the PS3's features. With a blu ray drive on top of it all, an on par 360 package will be more than 200 bucks more expensive. But XBL is SOOOOO much better, so I guess it more than makes up for it *rolls eyes*

It does seem to contradict what MS said earlier this year in a GS article, regarding the necessity of blu ray. Not really surprising tho, since most business people are LIARS.

The HD-DVD add-on was a zero-risk, huge-reward move. Worst-case scenario was they made a couple of bucks selling the add-on, while the best-case scenario would have killed the PS3 before it was even released.

Assuming the BR add-on even exists (and there's a good chance it doesn't), it won't be used for gaming. :|

Blu-Ray was not invented for the PS3 or for gaming. Prove me wrong anyone here. I dare you. The add on will be movies for people who want it. As for myself when and if I ever think Blu-Ray movies are a must for me I will pick a stand alone player because by then they will be cheap.

Well not if you want to keep Uncharted2 like it is. There are no loading screens after the initial load. And how many DVDs do you want? You know we heard these arguments before but that was with CD vs DVD. Who needed DVD right? Many also said DVD was just for movies.

Why did you bring up graphics? Games dont need as much GB for graphics as you think they do. Uncharted 2 has something way more than Crysis, and that is actual SUSBTANCE!!!

Firstly, you're trying to claim Blu-ray was invented for the PS3 and/or gaming by pointing to Uncharted 2's technical success. That is a non-sense point, it is not why Blu-ray was invented, even if it does facilitate games like Uncharted 2. Secondly, you could absolutely keep Uncharted 2 as is without Blu-ray. For example; a PC or PS3 could run Uncharted 2 without loading via installation. Maybe not as convienient, but possible. Thirdly, we did not hear these arguments with CD to DVD in movies, as CDs were not used for movies, nor are DVDs used for music now (most players still require CDs to play music, not DVDs). The transition you seem to be alluding to was the move from VHS to DVD, which was completely different from the transition from DVD to Blu-ray.

If it is true, then hopefully, it will be up to snuff, & if it is, then there would be no reason to buy a PS3, because the only thing that the PS3 will have are exclusives, if you happen to like them. It's mainly because both the 360 & PS3 have the same library of games when it comes to 3rd party. It would probably be as an add-on, though. If it doesn't happen, then MS should definitely have it on their next X-Box console.

Why is that? Simple. 360 has better multiplats, a higher install base, better online, etc.

And before anyone says that "multiplats look exactly the same on PS3 & 360," the difference isn't neglible; it has been quantified quite a lot since the launch of the systems and it still happens today, just not as big of a difference now as it used to be.

Crysis = 1 DVD = 6GB INSTALLED AND UNCOMPRESSED

So Gears 2 is 6.7GB.

You used Uncharted 2 as proof that bluray is needed, so my rebuttal was Crysis , a game that is superior than every console game ever made..............and its 6 GBs. Bluray is a luxury/convenience this gen. Next gen, MORE STORAGE SPACE may be needed, but not necessarily bluray, as there are other alternatives. a 2x bluray drive becomes an issue after so much data because of the slow read speeds, so either data has to be installed, or duplicated on the disk. Uncharted, Ratchet, Killzone, and the majority of first party games use this method, as well as heavy HDD cache to prevent this. This method is expensive though, so devs with a smaller budget resort to installs because its cheaper, and faster. Duplicating data on a bluray is difficult and tedious because the data is read at the same rate across the disc, so you have to prioritize data placement.

[QUOTE="Danm_999"] That's not proof Blu-ray was invented for gaming. In fact, Uncharted 2 could be achieved with either installation or multiple disks.Danm_999

Well not if you want to keep Uncharted2 like it is. There are no loading screens after the initial load. And how many DVDs do you want? You know we heard these arguments before but that was with CD vs DVD. Who needed DVD right? Many also said DVD was just for movies.

You misunderstood me. I'm talking about movies vs data. It doesn't matter a movie is data, a game is data, music is data. Blu-ray is a data format, not a movie format or a game format. Just like DVD and just like CD before it. And the only reason DVD wasn't used for music is because it was more expensive at the time and CD was already firmly established.

So then why did you challenge vaderhater's point that Blu-ray was not invented for gaming?

I got the impression he was implying it was just for movies like most lemmings do.

My point is it was adapted to the PS3 like DVD was to the PS2. It doesnt exsist because a game console needed it.

Bu.. Bu.. But the BluRay is useless! Lemmings are funny... :) and how is M$ going to milk their consumer base for this now? Maybe $300 for a M$ compatible BluRay . And they are probably going to start releasing their games on BD and saying the drive is still an option :P
