Forza Horizon 4 came out over 2 years ago. The game will likely hit the "best sellers" list on Steam when it releases there. That means there's likely 100K+ people that will rather pay for FH4 than subscribe to Game Pass or buy the game on the Microsoft store. The "money left on the table" refers to all those sales that could have happened in 2018... And the game being on Steam at launch would have more sales potential that it will over 2 years later. And is the game selling at $60 on Steam?

These moves to put games on Steam is showing us that the games aren't doing the numbers they want them to on Game Pass or the Microsoft Store. So now Xbox is willing to bring in less revenue in order to get more eyes on the game. Why not just launch on Steam day 1? This continues to be a trend all these years later. Game Pass and Microsoft Store aren't making any meaningful penetration on PC. Especially when a single Switch game can bring in more revenue that all Xbox first party games AND subscription revenue COMBINED on PC AND consoles.

This is stupid logic. Was Horizon: Zero Dawn ported to PC because it "didnt do the numbers Sony wanted it to" and they needed more eyes on the game?

Or was it ported 3 years after its release, long after it had maximized its earnings potential on its original platform, because they wanted an essentially "free" short term revenue burst, and they no longer viewed a PC port as a threat to devalue that original platform?

The same applies here. This game has maximized its earnings potential, and everyone who wanted to play it in Gamepass already has. This is just a "free" short term revenue burst.

Uh, no. The Xbox games were for sale on the Microsoft store. They were also available on PC Game Pass. After time passed, the games went to Steam and saw HUGE spikes in sales numbers and the playerbase. There's a reason the future Xbox PC titles are launching on Steam day 1... The games didn't move PC gamers to the Microsoft store. The PC gamers waited out Xbox until the games went to Steam.

This is why, in a way saying Microsoft "concedes" isn't far from the truth. They are admitting that they can't get PC gamers attention over the to Microsoft store or PC Game Pass. It makes more financial sense to sell the games on Steam day 1, even though they are giving up revenue to Steam in the process.

PC is one platform. Releasing in different stores is irrelevant.

Nope, it's platform wars now. We see this from people hating on EGS.

But they have a problem with EGS because of the company and practices, not because of the client or store per se.

Such a desperate company. Really is frustrating to see them in this state.

Wouldn’t be the first. Flight simulator 2020 is on steam as well. So is MCC I believe.

  • ReCore
  • Sunset Overdrive
  • Sea of Thieves

To name a few are already on Steam. I guess MS loves making extra money on the PC side than there average console.

The main problem with MS big attitude is they cannot fix the damn MS store and if they actually fix it to be on par with Steam at the very least, they would see more PC sales on their store. I'm just glad MS see the light that putting their games on Steam day 1 is the way to go from this point on and even Halo: Infinite has a steam page now. To be honest, I was gonna pay full price for Infinite anyway since I still enjoy Halo and despite its coming to GP, I rather have the full fledge game on Steam anyway.

Truth be told, i'd say their "Game Pass app" (the new Xbox App) is their primary PC storefront for all intents and purposes at this point; not the Microsoft Store..

sure, there's always going to be people who want to buy their games outright versus "renting" them via a subscription service.. On the console, that equation is simple because Xbox consoles are closed ecosystems.. if you're a console gamer that wants to buy an Xbox game, it's a no-brainer because there's only one option; the Xbox Store..

Unfortunately on PC, that equation is more complicated because there are competing storefronts on the PC platform with varying levels of brand loyalty.. so if you want to truly support those PC gamers who simply prefer buying thier software outright, you have to "go where the customers are".. and on PC, that's Steam..

so ultimately, "fixing the Microsoft Store" or "getting gamers attention over to the Microsoft Store" isn't their priority.. they primarily want you to use the Xbox App for Game Pass.. and since Steam is an unstoppable juggernaut on PC, they'd be fools not support that platform with content for those who aren't interested in Game Pass..

i agree, it's a clear win/win for both Microsoft and gamers..

How nice of them letting millions of Steam users buy their game.

I still haven't played FH4, but if I get the urge for a racing game, this is the version I'm getting.

Lol. System Wars is always so dramatic.

Yeah, suck it, MS! Now you're gonna, like... sell more games and make more money while giving users a choice of where to play and making the PC space just ever-so-slightly less shitty when it comes to storefronts.

Yeah.... Valve really stuck it to MS by allowing them to make money in a mutually beneficial way.
