http://www.techtree.com/India/News/Microsoft_Confirms_Going_with_Bluray/551-87585-581.html

"Just two days back, we reported that Sony is busy wooing Microsoft to add Blu-ray support to its Xbox 360 gaming console.

The effort's paid off (or so it seems) -- with Microsoft now confirming that it's trying to figure out the best way to connect with Blu-ray. The company also seems to be working on ways to include device driver support for Blu-ray drives in its Windows operating system.

Incidentally at the Mix '08 conference in Las Vegas, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said, "We have already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on."

"Toshiba has moved on. We have moved on, and we will support Blu-ray in ways that make sense," Ballmer had said rather pointedly.

Before Toshiba went public with withdrawing its HD DVD format, Microsoft had HD DVD players as add-on along with their Xbox 360 gaming consoles.

But with HD DVD all but dead and Blu-ray the winner, Microsoft had no option but to stop manufacturing HD DVD drives for its Xbox 360 console.

What wasn't clear though was whether Microsoft would finally go with the Blu-ray format. The latest admission from the company clears that confusion."

Could the 360 be next?

I like how that article said Sony was trying to woo Microsoft. Every other article I read on the issue had it the other way around with Sony in a cache-22 about whether to support PS3 or Blu-Ray as a format. If MS does indeed ad BD to the 360, it's great news for the console...now add Wi-Fi and do better hardware testing and the 360 will be a great console after all.

Exactly. Might as well spend a little more and get the player with the PS3 exclusives.

Well, if Microsoft would have put an HD-DVD drive in the Xbox 360, do you think Blu-Ray would have won? Of course not. HD-DVD would be the winner by now and you would be enjoying HD movies already. Instead they greedily offered an add-on drive as a way to milk consumers. This half-way support is what doomed HD-DVD as a format.

depending on how inexpensive it is, it could stem the eventual tide of 360 owenrs owning both consoles. but it has to be very comptitively priced.

That's when I knew HD-DVD was dead. When Microsoft announced the specs for the "elite" and everyone kind of expected an HD-DVD drive on it...nope.

If you mean the people who are angry now are the people who bought an HD-DVD?

Too bloody bad, they bought it knowing good and well that it might lose against blu-ray. It's their fault for not waiting.

So you would have rather Microsoft added an HD-DVD player standard in all its 360's and have the end customer pay for it regardless of if its something they wanted or not?

Forcing a format player on a consumer is more greedy then choice.

because if it had it from the start it would have been cheaper to have it in the 360 in the first place because it had the other parts need to make the hd-dvd to work they just need the disc drive instead of the intire casing, parts ect. plus you guys would of not had a dead hd-dvd player for 200 bucks that why.

So there you are - the best of both worlds: the Best games and now with a cheap add B.R. player !

So why would someone buy a B.R. player ( PS3 ) that also sometimes plays games ?

it is more greedy forcing the format, but this format war would've turned out far differently had they integrated hd-dvd into the 360's

Good thing I already have a PS3. Although this means that Microsoft will have to add a few more USB ports to their next console to make room for both players. That is to say if they aren't going with a BD inside their next console.

how is it more creedy when it is cheaper to have it with the system because the components in the system can be used. why buy the same components twice if it already there. it is cheaper to have just he disc tray in the system rather having to buy disc tray/plastic coating/parts that already in the 360 ect. if the hd-dvd was in there from start it would have been only a 100 more rather than 200 more.

It was not feesible for MS to put the HD-DVD drive in the 360. No matter how much they may have wanted to, it was not possible. Stop trying to re-write the past with poor logic.

Instead of putting it onto the "elite" model? Yep. Is there anybody out there who needs 120GB for their Xbox 360? They could have kept the disc space at around 40GB, added the HD-DVD drive and allowed for the survival and, I think, victory of the format they were one of the major backers of. When I think of everything on the PS3 and even the Wii that comes standard that Microsoft makes you pay more for...yeah, it's milking.

I'm a bit sorry I guess and sometimes go a bit over the top but only because of some post's and posters who really leave me scratching my head as to why they feel they must lie to themselves and others about the MS console platform.

The PS3, should it finally receive MGS4 & FF13 and IF they live up to expectations should be some sweet gaming there. :)

As they said they would. Though they may actually "support" it this time, instead of keeping it arms-length like they seemed to do with HD-DVD.

Sad to see that after 3800 posts you still feel the need to make such crazy comments only to piss people off.

jessie5788

MS launched the 360 in November of 2005. The first commercial HD-DVD players hit almost a year later. By delaying the 360 by a year, and raising the price by at least $200 (Probably more) to incorporate a technology that would assuredly be locked into a format war, MS would have effectively been committing market suicide with the 360.

Believe it or not, price is a major issue in consoles, and is the main reason, IMO, that the PS3 has had a rather rocky start to its generation.

actually the ps3 plays games all the time unlike the 360 if it breaks you can't play games. so you sometimes can play games on the 360.

And if the PS3 breaks you cannot play games on it. Kinda obvious, isn't it?

Also obvious was the overall point of his post. Something, it appears, you missed.

The overall point was invalid.

So there you are - the best of both worlds: the Best games and now with a cheap add B.R. player !

So why would someone buy a B.R. player ( PS3 ) that also sometimes plays games ?

Wow, if this isn't a blatant attempt to get PS3 owners pissed off, I don't know what is.

Sad to see that after 3800 posts you still feel the need to make such crazy comments only to piss people off.

It's all a matter of prospective my friend as I just sorta apologized adding the following info. : sometimes posts & posters go to far about the 360 platform which, just like in real life, I respond too only in SW - it's just for fun and frankly if PS3 can deliver the gaming goods this year I will be all over it. :)

depending on how inexpensive it is, it could stem the eventual tide of 360 owenrs owning both consoles. but it has to be very comptitively priced.Dreams-Visions

**looks at the $100 20 GB HDD***

I don't think MS knows the definition of competitively priced peripherals.

I would argue that the PS3 has already delivered many gaming goods, and it only looks to improve upon that soon.
