"The PS3 is a third player, they are at risk of reaching a single digit market share," Greenberg added. "They are a premium priced product in a tough economic time. They have a tough position to try and sell a product.

"The window of time when they were the cheapest Blu-ray player, those days have passed now."

Greenberg says that the key to success in a three console market is to differentiate your console, something he believes Microsoft has managed to do while Sony hasn't.

"The type of experience we are delivering is very different than the Wii," he said. Microsoft and Nintendo "are both doing really well delivering our different experiences. I think the problem that the PS3 is running into is that they are trying to deliver the same experience (as the Xbox 360) at twice the price."

Greenberg believes Sony is floundering, and places the blame for that squarely on the shoulders of Blu-ray.

Sony "has made a very expensive product built on the promise of Blu-ray," he said. "That hasn't worked out for them. Blu-ray is clearly not the next DVD."

And while Greenberg acknowledges the Wii's successes, he doesn't seem Nintendo's console as a threat to the Xbox 360.

"We see a lot of data that households are buying the wii60," he said. "But at the end of the day Xbox is where they spend the bulk of time. They want entertainment, Netflix, movies, games."

"We think those consumers (Wii owners) will want to upgrade."

What do you guys think? Will Microsoft continue their momentum over the PS3 for the rest of this Holiday season?

Most likely, but I don't think it'll be terrible holiday season for the PS3. From what I'm thinking, those who already own a 360, would probably pick up a PS3, and those who own a PS3, would probably pick up a 360. That is of course, if they aren't fanboys. As for the Wii? I'm sure everyone's got one of those.

You'd think, but they just keep selling, much like the DS. I mean, who doesn't own a DS by now? Nintendo has something special.

I just saw that and the article about Home from A. Greenberg on Kotaku and he really laid some smack talk down. Was rather funny  360 will kill the PS3 in holiday software and hardware numbers.

Blu-ray is not the next DVD? 20% of Dark Knight's sales are blu-ray, and its only been about a year since the format officially released...

I wouldn't be too surprised if the sales numbers were true, but his claim about Blu Ray is pretty weak. Netflix Blu Ray users is now over 500,000 BEFORE everyone starts opening their blu ray players/PS3s for xmas. Blu Ray does make the PS3 more expensive (which btw I LOVE watching Blu Rays on my hdtv, The Dark Knight is soooo good looking) so Sony better hope they can offer games that are with the extra buck, which is why 2009 better be their breakthrough year.

Yea I'm really curious about that. Well I know I bought two because I had one stolen. I mean besides the general gamer or kid, who else is buying a DS?

Something like 10,000 to 25,000 or something, the 360 is getting pretty trounced. Still, its up from the original, and almost has a million installed base, pretty big turnaround. But Japan, like always, is Sony and Nintendo land.

Edit: the numbers are weekly, not monthly FYI

Yeah but with WKC and such coming to the PS3, I have a feeling Sony is going to be taking back the JRPG crown from here on out. But September to October was hilarious watching the cows pull out massive damage control. Oh well, the PS3 deserves to come back now, its got some strong looking games.

According to NPD the 360 has already passed the PS3 in America as of October. That does not even include the 2 biggest sales months of the year Nov and Dec.

He's exactly right about Blu Ray sabotaging the PS3. As you all know I've been complaining about Blu Ray this whole gen. I'd probably be somewhat of a PS3 fanboy (believe it or not) if it was not for that confounded, infernal Blu Ray! :P

1.Sony is not doing a good job of explaining the price i agree with that.

2. Before the price drop of the 360, wasnt sony selling more PS3s than 360s?

3. MSoft doesnt want Sony to drop the price of the PS3

LMAO same thing happen last year on November and December NPD numbers and look PS3 sold more:lol:. Lemmings, prepare for serious ownage lol. You guys need to understand that NA is MS land, look at last gen, it was the only place the xbox sold. USA=/=the world. Worldwide sales is what matters. Sony having the PS3 outsell the 360 for 6 months this year in NA was just a disaster for the 360 since its the only place where the 360 actually sells.

I wouldn't get hyped about the PS3 selling a lot until a price drop and Killzone 2 happens. Hopefully it happens soon.

It's to be expected. $199>>$399 during a recession. Couple that with the fact that both consoles are more alike than they are different and 360 ends up on top.

I wonder why the 360 sells more? Does it have anything to do with the fact that they're cheap as dirt right now and any kid with a paper route can afford one?

Anybody who goes out and buys a 360 now over a PS3 must be limited in income, because if it's about game selection then they obviously do not realize that 2008-2009 will be the year of the PS3 and the beginning of the end for the 360.

Beginning of the end huh? didnt people say that last year? and Sony had alot of great games this year, what makes you think that the 360 is just going to stop selling, or studios will stop making games on the console where they sell the most?

Most Definitely, NPD is an uphill battle for the Ps3, Im afraid the system will only see the gap widen more between it and the cheaper platforms all the regained ground is projected to be lost in terms of market share.

For cows, it's just the same old song, PS3 outsells the 360 by 3k in a month and then its'teh year of teh PS3' and 'PS3 will catch up by the end of the year' #60 starts pounding PS3 again and it's 'bu bu bu teh pricedrop' or 'bu bu bu they had a year headstart' or 'bu bu bu I don't play sales.' Evendentally you don't play PS3 either.

BTW, I'm enjoying my BD copy of Dark Knight on my stand alone BD player I purchased at Walmart for $135 on Black Friday. Stop blaming M$ and Walmart for Sony's failed business model. You can find an 8th grader that would tell you it would be smarter to concentrate your success DURING the Holiday shopping season. As opposed to June/ Then again Sony Marketing Genius is an oxymoron....

When the starting price of your console is $200 cheaper than the starting price of your competitor, you're bound to sell much more units. And they're going to have to sell all the units they can, because there's no way in hell they're making any money off of Arcades, maybe Premium consoles, though, and definitely making some ground on Elites.

When the starting price of your console is $200 cheaper than the starting price of your competitor, you're bound to sell much more units. And they're going to have to sell all the units they can, because there's no way in hell they're making any money off of Arcades, maybe Premium consoles, though, and definitely making some ground on Elites.lantus

Actually, when you prepare your biggest titles for Holiday release and bundle software with your console, you tend to sell more units. Too bad this totally alludes Sony's marketing whizzes. They would rather overhype 2010 releases...

For like how long? 1 month? I will take 6 months NPD sales and WorldWide sales leadership over 1 month of winning Europe.... so PS3 still has the advantage.

So you like the Wii then...BTW 3 months of 360 sales negate the 6 months of Sonys 2 - 3k NPD wins and the minor Euro advantage they had. You must think John MacCain is the US president because he won Texas...

1.Sony is not doing a good job of explaining the price i agree with that.

2. Before the price drop of the 360, wasnt sony selling more PS3s than 360s?

3. MSoft doesnt want Sony to drop the price of the PS3

PSP107

Nah, the PS3 sold better at the beganing of this year and before 360 price drop the 360 had not only caught up but they also surpassed the PS3 sales by 12,000. Now, the 360 is showing strong signs of having a Wii (of 07) like Christmas. All and all, Ground may be lost to the PS3 WWsales at the end of this year (which was a great PS3 year) because of the LONG AWAITED price drop

EDIT: Then, even though they are rumors, many customers(that are not game literite) are being told by employees at places like Gamestop and Wal-mart that the PS3 exclusives are gonna be on the 360 (even games like LBP) and the 360 starts out at $200.

I say thank god for MS and NIN handing it to Sony...Look how arrogant Sony is right now.....Can you imagine if they dominated another gen?..The PS4 would have a fridge...microwave...and a new stove top all because Sony wants in on the "kitchen appliance" market...

well, he is right 360 NPD will own ps3 one but he sounds like a total @ss...Giancar

Yeah, I'll agree he does. But no less than Kuturagi slandering MS with "Xbox 1.5" or other brash statements like "Next gen doesn't begin until we say it begins".

How does it have the advantage when it is down around 7 million and the gap is getting further? Do you realize how long it will take for the ps3 to beat the 360 in sales?
