With its new Universal Windows Platform (UWP) initiative, Microsoft has built a closed platform-within-a-platform into Windows 10, as the first apparent step towards locking down the consumer PC ecosystem and monopolising app distribution and commerce.

In my view, this is the most aggressive move Microsoft has ever made. While the company has been convicted of violating antitrust law in the past, its wrongful actions were limited to fights with specific competitors and contracts with certain PC manufacturers.

Microsoft's best bet here is to open up UWP and loosen the restrictions on it- fast. They do that, and they have a chance to make it work, otherwise this will be another major failure for them.

The sad part is, outside of games, UWP has some actual benefits and is a progressive move towards the future of computing- but Microsoft's insistence on locking things down will be the death of them.

The guy in charge of Epic. Who are the guys who were intimately involved with the creation of the Xbox 360. And who also, by the way, gave Xbox one of its biggest franchise, in Gears of War. That's who.

Microsoft wants to do what google and apple does. There market has changed to that basically. Sure google is a bit more open but still not that much. Obviously Phil can be as nice as he wants but the blow back was coming. You can tell that this what Satya Nadella wants. They are going to disadvantage other stores.

@sts106mat Ever heard of Mark Rein? Him and Sweeny are basically the creators of Unreal Engine. Legends in the industry. There the founders of epic. Sweeny is the architect of that engine, an hall of famer. Cliff was just a prolific game designer at epic.

What else do people expect from a shitty company like MS? Any market they enter they try to monopolize. Look at the shit they tried to pull off during the Xbone reveal. Good thing is that they will fail with this UWP crap like they failed with GFWL, Windows 8 Store, Zune, Xbone, etc. They just don't understand the market and why people love Steam, GOG, Google, Apple, etc. This is just their latest attempt at throwing shit on a wall and hoping something sticks.

In fact, they were strong partners for GeOW. This is some legitimate criticism he's dishing out. UWP and the Windows Store are actually garbage.

True Google is not that open either, but you can still utilize android features under third party distribution. Its just not the default. They had to do that any ways under linux license. The complain here is that Microsoft will only allow developers to use new windows features only if they submit to the locked down UWP ecosystem. The big problem is Microsoft found themselves on a weird situation where distribution service like steam took off and they would like to be steam and the default source. Restricting things to disadvantage other distributors this late in the game is not the way to go. Its starting to look like anti-competitive conduct. Its just gets weird when the PR talk was about helping steam and others.

@quadknight: key word, were. Now they're up against Steam, EA, GOG, Uplay and now MS. Steam was garbage for years when it first launched, now everyone loves it. Origin was garbage for years and now it's decent. Uplay continues to be garbage. You can't just write MS off when they're just starting out. Every service has growing pains.

MS has now had two services and both are utter garbage, he has every right to write off MS.

M$ treats PC like a Console. They made the same mistake with GFWL and now they are making the same mistake with Windows Store. They need to realize that PC community and PC market works differently than the Console. Quantum Break's PC announcement was such a great news, followed by one disaster after another.
