The vocal majority in this thread are cows. All cows are trying to claim MS is a cancer, we know that isn't true. Fanboy fodder is what it is but it's typical cow behavior. Condemn 1 company's practices while ignoring another's. Yeah, it's mostly cows.

How is Microsoft selling through the Windows store any different from Steam, Origin, and others?

I am one of them. I dont see a problem if the product was better than anything else because as others have pointed out Google and Apple do it. But Win10 store is not to that level. It needs much, much work. I would have dont that "Trojan Horse" that Sony did with online fees if I ran MS.

I don't know enough about this subject to form an opinion yet, but I certainly know how Systems Wars works. Anyways, P Spencer seems to have chimed in about this issue, I copied a few of his tweets below:

Windows has always been an open ecosystem welcoming the contributions of hardware and software partners, and will always continue to be.

UWP is a fully open ecosystem, available to every developer, and can be supported by any store. Broad range of tools https://t.co/LqPcjRFzu9

We will discuss our next steps with the Universal Windows Platform at //build later this month.

where's his outrage against the "walled gardens" of the iOS Apple Store or Android's Google Play Store?..

Also, he's speaking as if Win32 apps are going away.. Devs can still make/publish Win32 apps if they want.. nothing has changed and nothing is stopping them.. And if they choose to, they can convert that Win32 app to the UWP format and publish it in the Widows Store.. there's no monopoly here..

I mean wow.. 10 minutes ago, the Windows Store was "trash" in comparison to Steam, Origin, or anything else.. but now it's a monopoly that needs to be taken down?.. I guess he only downloads his iPad apps straight from 3rd party publishers and bypasses the App Store.. oh, wait..

As usual, everyone gets a pass except Microsoft.. Apple has the most closed "walled garden" of them all and no one cares.. No one seems to care that even though you can find ways to load apps to the Android platform via other means than Google Play, those places are definitely "second class citizens" to the official Google Play store.. No one seems to bat an eye at the continued domination of Steam on PC and, as a matter of fact, people complain when publishers like EA, Ubisoft, and Microsoft open their own stores as competition to Steam in order to reduce a potential monopoly.. If Valve ever releases Half-Life 3, do you think you're going to see that game on Origin or the Windows Store?.. heck no.. so why are you complaining when EA and Microsoft keep their 1st party titles in their own respective "walled gardens"?

there's literally nothing of substance to be seen here.. haters gon hate

Cancer is kinda too strong word here. They are definitely up to something malicious here. But no need to escalate to such a level lol. We just need to keep an eye on them, thats for sure. In the end, widespread outcry will put them back into their place as always, else they can return to their little tiny xbox realm and rule there with as much iron fist as they want lol

@lostrib: Actually got cut off.

I don't game on PC, so I just want to ask what the difference is between playing on Windows 10 vs other PC places?

If you are buying from Steam or something of the like, how and why would you B able to cross play. Wouldn't you want to close some things off to prevent thefts or viruses?

Sounds like this guy has a stellar career in the business and a long and beneficial relationship with MS. (They made him a multi millionaire many times over) I doubt they take his words lightly and would be foolish to not address these issues soon.

And who the hell is asleep at the wheel at the store? Get that shit fixed yesterday! Someone should get fired for that mess.

So can someone explain to me like I'm five, why I should care if games like Gears of War or Killer Instinct use Windows Store and this UWP bull crap?

To my knowledge this doesn't hurt games like Pillars of Eternity or Anything on Steam or GOG for that matter, it only goes for Microsoft IPs like Minecraft, KI, and Gears.

Not only that, but this supports my theory of Microsoft turning the Xbox Brand into just the New Games for Windows Live platform.

@StrongBlackVine: This is a load of crap....

That's like saying "You can't have any 3rd party apps on MAC OS X because apple has an app store" ...... What microsoft are doing is NO different to what Valve does with THEIR games, or what EA is now doing with THEIR games.... or anyone else.

Nothing about the Windows 10 store suggests a lock down on anything other than games published by microsoft themselves.

Tim is just bitter because his shit games are not being bought anymore... a one trick pony that ruined his better PC franchise Unreal Tournement.... they have no say in anything.

Yeah, seems like people want to ignore that other companies do the same.

At least with the Windows store there should be the option of putting one application on there, and having it go to every compatible device which is cool. I don't think I'll be buying any games from it soon though.

At least Steam and Origin work right.

It doesn't work in the sense that it cannot provide the same control over the application (as its limited to the normal app store rules) ... so it has stupid things like forced V Sync, doesn't work with G-Sync ... has a framerate limit ... and graphic injectors/mods cannot be used on them. That phil spencer guy has tweeted that they are "looking into improving this" ... but we have to take that with a pinch of salt. The games work however ... just at a bog standard level ... comparable to a console (minus perhaps some higher settings).

Steam was terrible when it launched, people hated having to use it for Half-Life 2 / CS:Source ... origin was hated (the only reason people like it now is because you can get brand new games half price by proxying to mexico ... with not consequences).

The Windows Store clearly wasn't ready for this type of product... just meant for touch-mode apps etc ... It's up to MS to fix it, either way I'm not defending them out of any kinda personal interest, just calling out other people's double standards .. and the typical "anything MS does is evil, despite everyone else doing it!" mentality.

Just look at the Windows Store version of the new Tomb Raider game... That is what is going to happen to all Windows Store exclusive games, limited feature set, restricted options, no support for 3rd party applications like FRAPS or MSI AB. Its literality like playing the game on an X1 with some added resolution options.

@beardmad: I'll own QB because I pre ordered the digital copy. Any friends I know on the fence about the game that would want to borrow are no closer to me that Ft Sill, OK. It'll be the first thing I own from Windows 10 store. If what they have said is true and they are working on it then great. But mods are a big thing to pc gamers so if they think this store will work without open mod support then my god.

Yeah, this went south very quickly.

Microsoft's best bet here is to open up UWP and loosen the restrictions on it- fast. They do that, and they have a chance to make it work, otherwise this will be another major failure for them.

The sad part is, outside of games, UWP has some actual benefits and is a progressive move towards the future of computing- but Microsoft's insistence on locking things down will be the death of them.

It definitely has it's benefits and I agree MS needs something like this to succeed , but those damn corporate sh*ts always find a way to f*ck stuff up. MS has kinda found themselves on the outside looking in on future OS development , and they realized too late that they needed something like WUP . The only thing left to say to MS is :

@MBirdy88: There's a difference. Steam was the first of its kind. I think in that instance bugs wrong and decisions should be looked at with forgiveness.....they paved the way for everyone else. I also never had problems playing HL2 or DOD.

People hated Origin bc it was EA and they said they weren't going to be releasing EA games on Steam anymore. People were acting childish. I never understood the hate. Origin didn't have many problems even from the start.

I was there for the beginning of both of them.

The MS Store is made buy one if not the biggest software company in the world and said company has billions of dollars. There's no reason for these faults. They should be able to afford research that tells them PC gamers aren't going to agree with the restrictions or whatever.

They're not just trying to make their own store - they're forcing PC gamers to play in ways that shouldn't be forced.

Shit, not even EA/BF forces you to use Vsync.

MS has a history of this, you should well remember the GFWL debacle. MS struck gold (excuse the pun) when they brought online gaming from the PC to consoles, they found that they could charge for an online experience and for a good while I believe that cost was justified but you can't demand that gamers who are used to free online multiplayer to suddenly start paying. Even then the whole approach was flawed. It started off with a port of Halo 2 that was only playable if you had Windows Vista. You had to get an XBL Gold account, it wasn't even labelled as a Games for Windows Live account to start with..... Then there was the piss poor support that GWFL managed to somehow bring to the table in a market where Steam was already seen as the big dog and was only getting bigger. It was laughable when MS tried to breath life into the carcass that was GFWL by dropping the paid subscription system but even then, the anaemic library of games that supported the service, the woeful marketplace, the horrific update system that made PSN on the PS3 look good. The only right thing MS did was finally taking it out the back and putting a bullet in it. And now they want to recreate the failure that made them a laughing stock and made every PC gamer incredibly sceptical of anything MS said.

As for people hating on Origin, its fun to hate on EA because at that point in time they were making a lot of noise about how important they were and how much better than Steam they could be. The way EA handled the launch of Origin was bad. One morning Steam users suddenly found all EA games gone from the Steam store for no apparent reason. If you had EA games in your library you could still download them but you couldn't buy anymore EA games. People are used to Steam being the one place they get games and the one place where they can manage them. People got annoyed at how fragmented the DD space is now. Steam, Origin, Uplay, Blizzard etc, all require their own service and software client to get the games in question. Going back to the Windows store for a second, at least these other clients allow you to access the .exe launcher so you can add games to Steam and run them with all the Steam services like the overlay, the video broadcasting and the screenshots. The Windows Store doesn't let you do that, its another walled garden for MS to "let" you play in on their terms and now they are only releasing their games on it which is fair enough but what is irking PC gamers is that the other DD platforms do not restrict access to the files of the game whilst the Windows Store does.

Not saying you are wrong, just expanding more on what you said.
