this just in from teamxbox.com :

1UP reported on Monday that Microsoft plans to release a new Xbox console as early as next year, featuring beefed-up Xbox 360 hardware and built-in Project Natal technology. From the 1UP report:

Microsoft will not only release Natal as an add-on for the Xbox 360, it will come standard with the next Xbox console.

Yes, there will be a new Xbox console next fall.

However, the new console won't just be an Xbox 360 with a camera, though -- we've heard it will be considered a new platform and carry a new name (Xbox Natal?). It's not clear what sort of upgrades we might see, but some have suggested it will be an slight upgrade of the current Xbox 360 technology.

1UP speculates on the idea that Microsoft could try a similar move such as the one done by Nintendo, which basically built the Wii around the GameCube hardware, with the motion-sensing "Wiimote" being the real addition:

Current Xbox 360 games would be playable on it, but future games would be able to take advantage of the added muscle. Similar to what we see in the PC space, games played on the more advanced Xbox would look or perform better, but publishers will still be able to support owners of both systems. Some developers have complained that they've already maxed out the Xbox 360; perhaps this will give them room to expand.

Make no mistake, we wouldn't be talking about the sort of hardware leap we've seen with Xbox (or most other) platforms in the past, and we're not talking about Microsoft ending one console cycle and starting another. We're talking about an evolution of the Xbox 360; similar hardware but upgraded, repackaged, and rebranded.

Over recent years, we have received information on Microsoft's future plans for the Xbox platform, and that's why, among other topics, we extensively covered 3DV Systems' Z-Cam. Avid TeamXbox.com readers know we were the first publication to report that Microsoft signed IBM to create the CPU for the Xbox 360 (at a time when no one would believe Microsoft and IBM would work together or that the Xbox platform would use a non-x86 CPU) and that Microsoft was doing research on video-based motion sensing.

Today, I can tell you that I have obtained the first details on the next Xbox (info that we'll reveal in the coming weeks) and that's why we can confirm that the rumor reported by 1UP is false. Microsoft is NOT launching a new, upgraded Xbox 360 disguised as a new Xbox in 2010 (although built-in Natal technology is a possibility for a new edition of the Xbox 360, similar to the Elite or Arcade flavors).

It's not our intention to tease you, but for now the only thing I'm going to say about everything I heard regarding the next Xbox is that it won't launch until a certain type of television becomes more widespread because... (be sure to check out our Twitter account to learn more)

what do you think...............

I would be surprised if Microsoft went with IBM to make thier next Console, they would never part from the x86 or x64 that they know so well.

EDIT: amd IBM doesn't have a license to produce x86 or x86-64

Honestly, not a surprise, I'm just happy I won't have to buy a new Xbox (I hope that's how it works anyways) and just buy Natal if it ends up not failing.

I hope this new evolution isn't so grand that it renders the original 360 obsolete, I just bought a 360 last October and don't want to buy another system anytime soon.

Either way I'm not too sure of this wierd PC-like 360 upgrade, I'd much rather have Microsoft launch a next-gen Xbox sometime in 2011 or 2012.

That would make more sense and that would be a long way off. There's no way I would buy a new console which is simply a beefed up 360.

Some developers have complained that they've already maxed out the Xbox 360; perhaps this will give them room to expand.

Rexer-i4

Dead giveaway. I'm sure Microsoft wouldn't come out, and admit that their system is maxed out.......

Let this rumor die.

Wow, interesting.

Not that I really care about any type of motion-sensing technology or as a peripheral. Hell, I don't even have a Wii nor want one, unless my trusty GC breaks down. But it seems everybody seem to be copying Nintendo or inspired by them (what else is new?).

That's what I deeply respect about Nintendo, they always start a "trend" first, and making it a standard for the industry, which is very healthy and financially wise.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this whole generation turns out.

Even if developers were routinely giving the Xbox 360 a good workout and ensuring that no single core of the CPU was idling at any given time, using all of the system memory, that still wouldn't be reason enough to move on to a new console. In fact, if the results are any indication, that'd be an awesome reason to continue developing successfully on that platform. That's of course assuming that they're "maxing out" the 360, which is kind of a difficult thing to establish. Using all the CPU cores is not the same thing as "maxing out" a processor since you can always iron out your code and make it more efficient, I figure, from a layman's perspective mind you.

That too. No matter what it's pretty impossible to max out a system without an absolutely perfected code for your game. Not gonna happen, and like I said Microsoft wouldn't admit it even if it did happen. Why? Because that'd be incredibly stupid.

To be honest, I would find this acceptable. I really don't want to see Microsoft go the Wii route with the 360.

Edit:

Actually, I was just reading another thread and a thought popped into my head. Microsoft waiting until a 'certain type of TV' becomes more widespread? OK, I'm taking a wild guess here and thinking along the lines of 3D TVs possibly based using polarised glasses, shutter glasses or even the new types that (as long as you're stood in the right position lol).

I have the iz3d drivers for my PC. Now and then I delve in for some 3D gaming on my PC suing nothing more than some anaglyph (red/cyan) glasses. It works really well, especially for some games. COD 4 is awesome! The thing about it is, you can set the seperation and in the depth etc so that objects appear to protrude out of the monitor.

I may be adding 2 + 2 here and getting 5 but (if you follow my line of thinking) but imagine 3D gaming AND Natal? Imagine the 3D effect of someones hand coming out of your TV and being able to virtually shake it. Add to that Natal should be able to do headtracking, and so now your 3D view also changes perspective as you move your head around, peering round corners, looking through a window etc.

Maybe, just maybe this is where they could go with console gaming?

If MS releases their next console in 2010 Sony is screwed. There is no way Sony can push out another console that soon to compete with them. Oh, I hope MS releases new hardware in fall 2010. Bought my 360 a few months after launch and it just seems old now.

the five year cycle suggests Nov 2010 for the next console. I wouldn't expect MS to delay past 2011.

Its fake obviously its still too early to end this generation they ended the last generation in 5 years cuz the Original Xbox was a failure compared to 360 but now 360 is getting them tons of cash and it still got long time till its maxed dont expect any new console till 2013~2014.

1.) The first Xbox lasted only 4 years, not 5.

2.) Xbox 1 was a failure, really?

3.) Next Xbox in 2013-2014? I seriously doubt it, 2011-2012 would be more realistic.

I thought the same thing: 3D TV. 3D TV is a ways off though, and it will only gain widespread acceptance if it works WITHOUT glasses.

I thought M$ just announced a 10 year cycle for the Xbox. If they plan to release a new Xbox in the next year or 2 it better have lot of memory.

I would be surprised if Microsoft went with IBM to make thier next Console, they would never part from the x86 or x64 that they know so well.

EDIT: amd IBM doesn't have a license to produce x86 or x86-64

you do know IBM made the cell AND the 360's processor dont you...

the xbox 360 CPU is actually based on the MAC g5 series, not the x86 series.

The 360s CPU is based off the PowerPC CPU that IBM developed with Apple and Motorola.
