Well...maybe Epic shouldn't stop taking MS' exclusive offers and go multiplatform...u_u and not gimp their PC games.

EDIT: It just hit me...how is money "still tight" after their success? Gears 1 and 2 selling 10mil+ combined, UT3 probably has sold 3mil+ across all the platforms, surely Shadow Complex didn't cost THAT much to make and it was a best seller, and lastly the UE3 engine. :| It's the most licensed engine this gen. What does Epic consider financial hardships?

killab2oo5

They never said money was tight for Epic..they were referring to Chair Entertainment, developers of Shadow Complex.

Most of the articles about the general difficulties of being an independent developer, where you often rely on big publishers for funding and marketing and end up dependent on them. The "Microsoft might have to buy Epic" headline of that article is a bunch of sensationalist BS made up by the author to bring in some hits. The original article doesn't mention anything like that, which shows you why Gamasutra is an actual decent source for gaming industry news.

[QUOTE="masterpinky2000"]Makes sense -- does Epic do any games for PS3 and Wii anyways?razgriz_101

UT3 was on PS3.

but then it would cause a massive black hole aswell in the sense where are companies going to get their middleware (UE) if that dissapears it would have an adverse effect on the market mainly due to them being owned by Microsoft it wouldnt be a great idea for the industry as a whole it would actually damage it to an extent and in some cases developement costs will rise as some companies solely rely on UE type engines.

I can't imagine MS buying Epic and demanding that they shut down their largest revenue source.

There would be little purpose in purchasing Epic. You don't want to make a game engine exclusive. Not only would that kill their revenue, but it would just encourage developers to look at other engines that much sooner (like say Cryengine 2), something you definitely don't want them doing. And even if you did, an aging engine like UE would not be one you would choose. As for Gears, MS can simply make an exclusive deal for that IP. There is no reason to buy out the whole company for that one IP.

Uh. Do you even know how much Epic pulls in from Unreal 3 licenses? Why would they be bought out. I highly doubt it.

On paper that sounds awesome. Microsofts Funding going into an Unreal Engine 4(when the time comes). Could be a beast engine. But thats an on paper thing. Personally I don't see Epic going to Microsofts banner. Though if Microsoft did they would also pick up People Can Fly(painkiller devs). So 2 very good devs would be a major improvement to Microsoft's first party, plus they cater to alot of the 360s audience.

Honestly...don't they have enough recources to remain a independent studio? And what will happen with the Unreal engine if MS accuires it? I don't think that's a smart move for Epic.

Developers do not care what platform cross platform games sell better on provided that they sell enough to make a return on their investment. This is reflected by the sheer number of 3rd party developers who go by a PS3, 360, PC release combo. Microsoft is keeping hold of exclusives purely because it is in their interests to keep exclusives to their platform, simple as that. AnnoyedDragon
Well, yes I'am aware of the fact that MS keeps Gears Of War 2 exclusive to the 360 because it peaks the publics interest in the platform, they know they need a 360 to play it. I know that, hence why I wrote that. Another fact is that developers DO care how much their games sells on platform since it's just not a matter of "copy and paste" to port a game to a console. Valve going only 360 and Final Fantasy XIII not being released for the 360 in Japan are prime examples of what I'm talking about. So platform sales are very much relevant, there are cases of developers porting games to other consoles when they original release didn't get the sales they were hoping for.

The Unreal Engine is used for alot of the multiplats on the PS3.

The Unreal engine is the ONLY thing keeping the company independent the same with Valves Source Engine. Without these engines being sold to other developers they would of been bought out years ago.

Microsoft doesn't really need to buy epic due to marketing, and exclusive agreements. Paying 300 million+ on a studio for absoloutly no reason seems dumb.

No it doesn't, they get Unreal Engine exclusivity.

It would be dumb for them to buy Epic and then make the Unreal Engine exclusive. Why short yourself on the licencing fees? The Unreal Engine is used on quite a few games and the licencing fees would be welcome extra revenue.I'm sure that MS would not care if a company wanted to make a PS3 game on the Unreal engine tech. They would get paid anyway.

I don't think MS could afford Epic. Epic makes huge amounts of cash from UE3 licensing and would likely come at a high cost. A cost that is higher than MS may be willing to pay especially if in the process MS makes UE3 xbox exclusive cutting off revenue stream from licensing the engine to developers that produce games for pc and ps3.

I'm sure Ms could buy EA if they wanted it bad enough.

What do you think the bidding price would be for EPIC? What did EA pay for Bioware/Pandemic? It would cost MS more than it cost EA for Bioware/ Pandemic because Epic is huge thanks to UE3 licensing. I'm not sure MS or any publisher could swallow that cost in this economy

MS payed 375 million for rare the largest purchase in the game industry ever, if MS wants it They'll take it.

this would be a big purchase and a worthy one, the unreal 4 engine will be totally owned by MS, that could be a very bad thing for Sony. MS is totally taking over lol, gotta love it, remember when some doubted them in the beginning?

This. IF MS buys Epic they are doomed. Look at Ensemble Studios, FASA and now Rare are making Natal games :P

Ensemble hadn't made a good hugh selling game in a long time, same for FASA. Age of empires 3 and its expansions sold badly on PC. FASA's last game Mechassault 2 blew chunks *an unworthy sequel to the first game* so no ensemble and FASA weren't good studios shut down before their time.

edit: showing how bad shadowrun was i completely forgot about that game.

Edit 2: and lets not forget it was ensembles idea to do the halo stuff microsoft wanted them to continue doing RTS for pc.
