As it stands dc universe onlie looks like itll be a hit on the ps3 once all the bugs are ironed out. M$ needs to think about its consumers more rather then their own agenda.

From what I can understand from limited information on there exchanges with MMO companies, Microsoft doesn't want the games accessable outside the Xboxlive servers, meaning that not only would the MMO need to be hosted on those servers, they don't want other platforms outside of the Xbox acessing them. Along with whatever premiums MS decides to charge for the server usage as well, they probably also want a cut of subscriptions. SE dealt with them once and it seems neither party is overly interested in getting back together to work on XIV "yes the game is improoving wait for the review of the PS3 version for proof" SE has stated that they came to MS with an offer but due to the restrictions that would be placed on them they opted out, but do have a version that was ready for testing if Microsoft ever lifted these restrictions. Seems MS doesn't want anyone making a tidy profit from the Live servers than themselves.

1. MMO's are not amazingly huge money makers beyond WOW.
2.Most MMo's are grind tastic suck fests that get boring after about level 30.
3.console mmo's do even less and you are pretty much made a lepper in the online game cause no pc users will play with you.

So what boat did they miss?

Guild Wars is the only MMO I liked, I got all of the expansions for it and there was no monthly subscription.

IMO Microsoft didn't miss the boat with console MMOs for a couple of reason already stated. (WilliamRLBaker) Also, just look at a game like WOW, from what I can discern from the late game raids and such (have only played at a friends house to about lvl 5) is that you need total control on your controls which can get complex. And you won't reach that level of play with a normal controller.

Can we at least wait until DC Universe comes out and is open to the public? Does anyone else remember the Conan MMO that was supposed to be so revolutionary (and come to the 360 BTW). Everyone in the beta was raving about it and when it launched it crashed and burned. I suggest holding off until DC is a success before holding it up as an example to what is right with the PS3 and wrong with XBOX 360.

Which is funny because guild was isn't actually an MMO, it's an online multi player game... Argue with me all you want but it's true. (and I don't hate guild wars I have over 800 hours played)

I'm not going to argue with you, but all game sites and the developers classify it as a MMO. The towns are MMO, but once you party up and enter mission I suppose it is more of a online RPG/multiplayer game.

I'll agree they should have finished this MMO and made it free to play for XBL Gold members. :D

More Ensemble Halo MMO concept art revealed

Dylan Cole an artist who worked with Ensemble Studios on the cancelled Halo MMO has made some concept art and paintings available from the project on his website. The incredibly detailed images show what the game environments may have been like if the project saw the light of day and Ensemble was still with us. Take a look at this outstanding image showing what a Forerunner City may have looked like in game:

Incredible art

And another showing a Halo City from a distance:

If in game graphics were 1/5 as good as these outstanding art pieces the MMO would of been a marvel to play. It is a great travesty that executives at Microsoft pulled the plug on such a promising game. I recommend that everyone check out Dylan Cole's website for more Halo MMO art plus more incredible pieces from his other projects:

Xbox Live does allow third party servers to share data, lookup the engineering blogs for Xbox live also there are MMOs on Xbox such as monster hunter frontier online in Japan.

http://www.1up.com/news/final-fantasy-xiv-xbox-paused

The XBox 360 version of FFIX has been "paused," while the PC version has been released and the release of the PS3 version is TBA.

"Speaking to VG247, producer Hiromichi Tanaka said that Square-Enix hasn't given up yet. "We're still talking with Microsoft at the moment so there is no update as to when we'll start again," he said. Tanaka reiterated that Microsoft's strict Xbox Live policies are still the main point of contention. But when pressed on whether the game was canceled, he claimed it is merely paused."

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101640-Final-Fantasy-XIV-Not-Coming-to-360s-Because-of-Xbox-Live

"The main reason why we couldn't go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system," he stated. "{Live is} different to the normal internet environment, so when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice.

"Microsoft has a different point of view: they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live. We're still talking to ... We couldn't come to an agreement on Xbox Live."

An Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIV was considered, being announced to be in talks with Microsoft to bring the game to the system. However, in an interview with Eurogamer, Tanaka stated that, "The main reason why we couldn't go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system. {Live is} different to the normal internet environment, so when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice. Microsoft has a different point of view: they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live. We're still talking to... We couldn't come to an agreement on Xbox Live." FFXI was only allowed by Square Enix onto Xbox Live as it only required a Silver Xbox Live membership, therefore was not considered closed as did not require any additional fees to play. Tanaka has recently reaffirmed that development on the Xbox 360 is considered "on hold" and that there are "no plans" to continue development unless the situation with Microsoft and Xbox Live changes

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/finalfantasy11/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary%3Bread-review

"While this online role-playing game may have been a hit for the PC and PlayStation 2, it feels very awkward and entirely out of place on the Xbox 360."

"As if to force you to change jobs often, the game limits you to just one character slot, unless you pay extra on top of an already fairly steep monthly fee. Considering you're probably already paying for an Xbox Live Gold account, the need to pay a monthly fee is a considerable disincentive."

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/phantasystariv/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary%3Bread-review

"On the Xbox 360, the first two or three servers seem to remain fairly populated, but the rest are absolute ghost towns. Also, you really don't get the impression that a lot of people are playing the game online. But the common areas are really only there for commerce and grouping purposes. Up to six players can be in a party, and once you start a mission, you'll never see anyone outside of your party until the mission is complete and you head back to a common area. So don't mistake this for a massively multiplayer game. It most definitely isn't one. That sort of makes the game's monthly fee a little hard to swallow, especially when consider that other games of the same type don't require a fee. On top of all that, the game doesn't even give you a 30-day trial to decide if it's your thing or not. That's pretty weak."

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105915-Blizzard-Wont-Make-Xbox-MMO-until-Its-Sure-Live-Can-Take-It

"Microsoft puts limits on how many free updates developers can put out for their games, which would present significant difficulties for Blizzard when it came to adding new content. Blizzard's Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street said that the developer would need assurances from Microsoft that Live would be able to handle the demands of an MMO before it would even think about starting development."

The structure of Xbox Live is something that multiple developers have decried. Square Enix made it very clear that the reason that Final Fantasy XIV wasn't coming to the Xbox 360 was because of Live, and Valve described the rules as a "train wreck," and assumed they would have to be change because of how broken they were."

Brownesque

I'm reposting this from another thread, partially due to its greater relevance here and partially due to the fact that it bears repeating. Most of it is not my words, anyway.

Developers and Gamespot think the Xbox 360 is a bad platform for MMOs.

I honestly believe the MMORPG as a genre should die a horrible death and go away. WoW is the only good MMO I've ever encountered, and that's because it's Warcraft, not because it's an MMO. I was livid when I found out they were putting the Lich King climax, which I had been replaying on Warcraft III for years, would be put on WoW, a game with a huge barrier to entry and a stronger social gaming function than an effective content delivery platform. They could have put the entire experience of WoW into a 5 minute CGI cutscene and I would have been happier. But, no, I had to spend 6 months spamming "LFGs" and working the AH, grinding out wool cloth and waiting for instance locks to expire so I could get the payout of a 2 minute in engine cutscene.

if you are playing MMO's for story, you are doing it horribly wrong, especially WoW. TOR might be different though.

the lore in WoW has been poorly delivered to say the least, they butchered a lot of what made the older ones so great. no one ever pays attention to it anyway, at least when I'm in raids, people just DGAF it. WoW will always be competitive focused- Arena, PVP etc, even if this is an unbalanced POS most of the time, it's really the only reason I play.

I think any game who's major goal is to ensnare people into paying a monthy charge for spending countless hours playing it is the exact opposite of what a console maker would want. people that are addicted to WoW are spending most of their time playing WoW and that means their money is only going one place. M$, Sony and Nintendo would rather have people buy a game spend a small amount of time on it, run out and buy some more games.

Yeah, compared to say "The Death of Hellscream," "The Ascension, and the general plot of Arthas becoming the Lich King, Warcraft 3 had a far better delivery. I can honestly say that I think I derived more enjoyment from reading the Warcraft 2 manual than from playing WoW. People DGAF lore in raids because it's a raid. Raids are for loot before lockout, ahlways. Most people have been there over a dozen times anyway. Even casual players have normally run ICC or whatever 5 or 6 times before the expansion's over. That's not to say people don't enjoy the lore, they just don't sit there and think about Tirion Fordring when there are mobs to be chainpulled.
