I think microsoft are starting to coast through this generation. They've sold more units than last gen, so they're happy, their console has beat out Sony - probably what they consider their biggest competitor - and they've made a decent bundle off Halo 3, their lottery ticket that always wins. Plus, they've found a little brother for Halo in the form of Gears of War, which has also done pretty well for itself in raking in the sales.

In fact, it would appear that they've settled into a strategy of releasing Gears of War and Halo games in cycles. Getting bored of Gears of War 2? Dont worry, Halo Reach is out next year. When you're done with that, Gears of War 3 will probably be around the corner.

And for me, that just doesn't cut it. They've been blessed with the best third party support you can ask for, but it always sucks to see the company which MAKES your system pull back and offer limited support in the form of their own games. Having sold off most of their third party studios, they're at least honest in admitting that they pretty much have no interest in making first party titles. Instead, their business model seems to be second party games made by other developers under the microsoft umbrella, or securing exclusivity for the PC and 360 from third party developers like EPIC.

Which basically means Gears of War, Forza and Halo - right? That and a RARE game released every 10 years only to score 'good but not great' reviews. That just isn't enough. They need new IPs, new ideas, new games. I'm not a big Gears fan, though Halo is amazing, but it only comes about once every two or three years. There's no steady supply of new, interesting games coming out of Microsoft's studios, which is sad for a company supposedly passionate about gaming.

Microsoft seems to be happy with pc/360 games, since they're technically exclusive to Microsoft, which is good enough for them. They also know that mutliplats sell good on the 360.

But yeah they need IP's. They should think about the consumers too.

But with SW logic PC gamers getting their share is a bad thing and it makes the PS3>360 because cows can spend X amount of money and/or rely on another system that is not the Xbox 360 to play a game that is not on the 360s competitor, the PS3. (that cows are fanboys of)

As long as it makes them money, they'll continue with the sequels. In another year we'll have another Halo and another Fable. Just what 360 needs. Of course, I bet Wii owners would like to have this problem. They can't seem to get quality franchises out fast enough. How long does it take to make a Zelda game anyways?

MS needs some development talent. Thats why Sony is killing them right now in exclusive quality games and new IPs. All the 360 has is Halo,Gears and Forza, its pretty sad really.

I think they need to bring back Crimson Skies, Mechassault, and Blinx. Not to mention Kameo, which the sequel to has been rumored to be canceled. Other than that (and Conker!), I don't really care about the differences between exclusives and multiplatforms. If I can get it on my 360, I will. If I can't, well, that's what the other two are for. :)

It's because they've had so much third party support, the AAA games are pretty much made for them. So i can understand why they sit back and dont make games themselves when a steady stream of quality is coming in from third party developers, but at the same time, while it's great for people who already own a 360 that those games are being made, it gives people who DONT have one no reason to pick one up, as all of it's quality games are third party, and therefore like to appear on other systems like the PS3 or the PC, which also boast 1st party games on top.

I totally agree. They started off great with Gears of War and even Viva Pinata, but they really fizzled out after that. I've said this before: It's ironic. MS has the money this gen to mess around with new IP's, test new franchises to crowds, etc, but they do no such thing. It is actually Sony, who in last place shouldnt be risking their demographic and who should have been relying on older franchises from their more successful last generation console who is making fresh new IPs. Uncharted, inFamous, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, etc. are all great new franchises. Their older franchise games are finally rolling out in the name of GT5 and God of War 3.

Well when you think about it, Sony have been hit hard by a bad start and a lack of third party support. Therefore they NEED to invest in their first parties and get some good games out there to drive up some sales. Microsoft on the other hand have lost a lot of money from last gen, and have great third party support this time around, so they perhaps are the ones who should be spending cash on first party development the least.

They NEED to make money this gen, otherwise their shareholders are going to bail. They lost too much money on the original xbox to finish up at a loss with the 360 as well. While they're a giant, rich as heck corporation, we need to remember that the company is split into independent sub-companies with their own budgets. Microsoft's gaming division has a budget which it must stick to, not a blank cheque to throw around microsoft's money wherever they like.

That might explain the situation at least; i'm not saying it's a good one. :P

EDIT: gamespot keeps ruining the format of my posts :?

Yeah, your right, but like you said, MS is sailing. When the king is pushed into a corner, he'll fight back-- MS keeps pushing Sony, and I think that MS thinks they have a big enough shadow to scare Sony. Come next gen, Sony seems a little more prepared in terms of delivering well known franchises in terms of the ones they've established not only this generation, but previous ones too.

If MS gets in trouble next gen, they'll need to make new IPs that may not collect as many gamers... Well actually that may not be true, Gears of War is still a young franchise and God knows slapping Halo on a box is enough to sell millions. MS has it made. Sony screwed themselves with their expensive console. Halo + PS3 $699= MS Win.

If we're going to do a comparrison between MS and Sony, should games that are shared with PC count since you can't play them on Sony systems? Mass Effect and Bio-Ware were major reasons that I went with a 360. They are on pc... but i'm a console gamer so I never even considered getting them for PC.

I supposed if you don't count great games for the 360 as great games for the 360, then the 360 doesn't have alot of great games... but that seems a little silly imo.

The problem with MS is that they rely too heavily on Gears and Halo. Every year MS has to have a killer app, preferably Halo or Gears:

2006- Gears of War

2007- Halo 3

2008- Gears of War 2

2009- Halo ODST

2010- Halo Reach

2011- Gears of War 3?? (or perhaps some Geow2 expansion priced at $60)

Of course, all these titles will instantly sell millions, and this leaves MS pretty much satisfied throughout the year, leaving very little room for new exclusive IPs.

What we are seeing is a business model, and while I am inclined to agree, M$ is not. In fact, people claim they won E3, with a multiplat show.

So, if M$ has the momentum, and people are super happy with this strategy of paying for timed exclusive's, I don't see why M$ should feel they need to take chances on New IP's.

As a gamer, I would like to see it happen, but as a business man, I accept the cold hard truth. With their Install base larger, and the success, there is no incentive.

Exclusives don`t matter that much these days only on Nintendo consoles do first party games sell the console. Most casual gamers play more multiplats like fifa or COD anyway.

How many exclusives has the PS3 had this year only really two big ones Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 and the 360 has had ODST and is getting Forza 3.

2010- Halo Reach

2011- Gears of War 3?? (or perhaps some Geow2 expansion priced at $60)

Of course, all these titles will instantly sell millions, and this leaves MS pretty much satisfied throughout the year, leaving very little room for new exclusive IPs.

[QUOTE="warmaster670"]

Sonys already brought out 6 new IPs this gen, with at least half of them being overall well recieved.

PBSnipes

Which is comparable to MS:

  • Kameo
  • Viva Pinata
  • Gears of War
  • Mass Effect
  • Lost Odyssey
  • Crackdown

Mass effect isnt theres, gears of war, isnt theres, and i think they already killed kameo (shame)

MS funded the original Mass Effect (at least the 360 version) in its entirety before selling the IP to EA, MS owns the rights to the original Gears, and killing Kameo 2 doesn't negate the fact Kameo 1 exists.
