Microsoft: No Xbox One in Japan this Year, Tier 2 Country

The Japanese gaming site 4Gamer still managed to grab an interview and to ask whats up with Microsofts upcoming console in the archipelago of the rising sun.

As part of the interview Microsoft Japan President and CEO Yasuyuki Higuchi confirmed that the Xbox One wont land on the Japanese shelves any time soon.

"For the launch of Xbox One Japan is a Tier 2 country and not a Tier 1 country, so itll come with the second wave, that will be delayed a little bit [compared to North America]."

When the interviewer pressed him to confirm that the console wont be launched in 2013 he did just that.

"Thats right. Itll launch after the Tier 1 markets."

Microsofts executives knew they were walking on eggshells as they talked to the press, since the Xbox brand isnt exactly popular in Japan, and when the reporter concluded the interview telling Microsoft Vice President and Executive Officer of the Consumer & Partner Group Haruaki Kayama that hed wait for further information on Xbox One soon, he responded laughing:

"Yes, so please dont report too negatively."

Well, Sony and Nintendo smack them silly as far as sales are concerned in Japan.

Probably a good choice not to release there, they can only lose.

You can pretty much count on next to no Japanese dev support on XBone then.  If MS aren't even willing to try to win it over, it means they won't try to moneyhat JRPGs as much as they did with the 360 early on.

I'm sure all 3 Xbox fans in Japan will be mildly upset, but eventually they'll get over it.

Xbox has never sold well in Japan. They might as well not release it at all over there.

Is it weird that the more I read this thread the happy I am with the approach ms is taking in japan...  Shows some gusto to do this...  I remember how much ms was determined to take Japan with the 360 Goin well out of their way to both devs and gamers and saw no return whatsoever....  Its like the old west now that they did this....  Welp, we tried!  Now fuk off japan!

Yet still Ni no kuni destroys all western games released this year, try again troll. Japanese games are as important as western games, without them the gaming industry would lose a lot of variety.

They wanted to see what percentage of people would buy a more expensive, less powerful console.

Generally the Japanese will "buy local," which means supporting Nintendo and Sony as they're Japanese companies. And after Microsoft's fiasco and lack of manners, I'm sure Japanese gamers would be insulted. Expect PS4 and WiiU sales to dominate X1

If by ten years behind you mean they have not casualised their games as much the west did, then I agree. However making your games more casual and mainstream does not mean you are making them better. Despite the fact the Wii U was failure in terms of sales, Nintendo still dominates the handheld market. No matter how much in denial you are, the truth is that the 3ds is at this point a worldwide success and an awesome system with great exclusive games. The success of the 3ds makes up for the failure of the Wii-U.

Everyone outside of America is tier 2, regardless of their labelling. Every media advantage the Xbox is said to have seems exclusive to the US (for obvious reasons)

Why anyone outside of the US would pick one up confounds me.

Is this a suprise? MS sold what, 1/25th in Japan what they sold in the US? I wouldn't go back there, either.

No idea, it would go someway I guess. I don't get the point of it all anyway. I already have SKY, and the Xbox already gave me on deman movies so ... what's the benefit now?
