Microsoft on Xbox One vertical orientation: "Do it at your own risk"

Panello revealed to GameSpot at the Tokyo Game Show, "We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk." He clarified that "it wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both".

The Xbox One isn't the only system to feature a slot loading drive; both the PlayStation 3--original and slim models--and PlayStation 4 have a similar design, and users are free to orient those consoles horizontally or vertically without risking damage to the console.

Panello stated that Microsoft discovered that "we found, interestingly enough, that 80 percent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally".

The Xbox One is scheduled for launch in North America, most European markets, Australia, and New Zealand on November 22 this year, with follow-up releases in Japan and the remaining European markets in 2014.

How have the lems been owned? I don't get it?

I find this a little disappointing, I usually have my consoles all vertical, but that said, the X1 is far chunkier and looks more at home being horizontal this time, and is such a shape that I will be able to stack stuff on it anyway.

The Xbone can't even be put vertically showing their shoddy design and build quality, enjoy another gen of scratched disk and RROD lems. At least this time the superior quality of the Sony designed Bluray disk will be more scratch resistant. This isn't exactly ground breaking news... Everyone already know, Microsoft sucks bigtime when it come to manufacturing hardware. Yeah, they want people to spend $500 on a piece of fragile junk that you buy and play at your own risk; Who the hell says that??? What a crappy company!!!

I'm not making a big deal out of it, but any way you slice it--it's a downgrade from the previous console. Suppose for a moment you don't have the lateral space for the console and it would be better to put it on its side. No option to do that anymore.

I'm not making a big deal out of it, but any way you slice it--it's a downgrade from the previous console. Suppose for a moment you don't have the lateral space for the console and it would be better to put it on its side. No option to do that anymore.

Options is always a good thing, but if someone is shelling out $500 for a console, they'll make room for it. 

Im actually laughing at the pure lack of sense, logic, and maturity in these other posts.

Why exactly is this a big deal? We've known what, like forever that the One is a horizontal only console. Its just now they've seen people standing them up, so they want to make sure they are covered. Seems normal to me.

Im not sure why anyone would stand a console vertically anyway. I like my hardware to be standing in the safest possible way, I've never stood up my PS3 and the one time I stood up my 360 my dog bumped it and knocked it over. It really is just best to have it down anyway. With MS's design for the one they wanted to focus on key things, mainly how quiet and cool the console runs (its practically silent and very well cooled). So they decided it was most efficient this way, and since finding that 80% of xbox owners put their xbox's laying down, it wouldnt hurt much to just do it one way and do it right.

Options is always a good thing, but if someone is shelling out $500 for a console, they'll make room for it.
