Microsoft today announced record first-quarter revenue of $16.2 billion for the quarter ending September 30, which is 25 percent increase over the same period in 2009.

So much for MS being in decline. :D I guess the death of MS was exaggerated.

lol, the death of MS is ALWAYS exaggerated. MS has their tech in everything from consoles, to MP3 players, TVs, web application and programs, etc. People think they are just about gaming and OS systems. I find it funny when fanboys say if Kinect fails MS will be in trouble, as if that 500m was going to bring them down. They are worth over 250 BILLION dollars, they will be ok if Kinect fails lol. Side note, they should give me that 500m :P

And yet they're raising Xlive to $60 per year. How can 360 people not be disgusted with MS nickle and diming money gouging tactics?!

Microsoft said Xbox 360 sales were up 38 percent from the same quarter last year [link]. EDIT: Microsoft says they shipped 2.8 million Xbox 360 consoles in the July-September 2010 fiscal quarter. [link]

The Wii, by comparison, shipped 1.93 million consoles the July-September 2010 fiscal quarter [link].

PS3 results should be available tomorrow/late tonight, I think.

Anybody who said MICROSOFT was going to die is stupid obviously.

Kids these days act as if MS only has the Xbox brand...

Because they actually USE Live rather than sit on the other side of the fence and criticize it? ESPN integration is most likely responsible for the hike, and well worth the money IMO. How is it that i have PSN and i STILL choose to pay for Live? How can you say that people should be disgusted based on your idea of what value is? Isnt that a bit selfish? And  @ Tactics........you are way too involved in this console war dude.

MS nickle and dimes it's customers so it can pay off game companies for DLC content and more.

though I doubt ESPN was the reason for the hike since users are already paying for it.

Meh... I was originally paying $120 a year for Live (monthly renewal) but just picked up 12 months for $35. It's not all that expensive TBH (though to some it may be).

I'd give him a D for effort.

He only provided like, 1 statistic related to MS to back up his claims, and that was IE's market share...which is hardly compelling proof.

A "cool opinion bro" will suffice in the comments, I think.

Those are pretty admirable earnings for MS, especially seeing their entertainment division contribute with $382 mill. It's still cause for concern to see MS's revenue stream come primarily out of its OS division because if that were to ever dry up Microsoft would be looking at some serious downsizing issues. Still, it's generally pleasing to see MS garner the respectable success from its product diversification efforts.

Being honest, MS is probably charging the fee simply to cover its operational costs. Expanding XBL to offer more features and make it more a means for media disbursement isn't cheap and I'm fairly confident they minimize the cost as much as seems reasonable.

$500 million in Kinect advertisement isn't cheap either.

Here's five of my possible theories.

1. MS's main consumer base is parents with spoiled children who think money grows on trees.

2. MS's install base is aware of but honestly doesn't give a **** about how much money they have to pay.

3. MS is offereing some sort of unique bargain or free service/product that we don't know about yet.

4. Hypno-toad.

5. MS knows exactly the right way to advertise/hype their product so that most will ignore the added costs.

...and pretty much all of that revenue comes from the PC market and B2B transactions. Such a small part of it has anything to do with gaming. Gaming is nothing more than a nice little secondary project for MS.

They said it's from the Entertainment and Devices Division which includes 360 products but obviously other stuff as well.

lol, the death of MS is ALWAYS exaggerated.

250bill in networth, thats taking into account everything they own including the staplers, Apple has enough money stored to buy MS's name and use it as their own... I think the value of MS was about $50bill which a simple google will return lots of evidence... So Apple could take out a large cheque(assuming the head MS accepts it) and buy it out.

Without MS, Apple would still be a tiny niche player. The main reason the iPhone/iPods really took off is when Apple made them Windows-compatible. Even though there are a lot more Macs now compared to the beginning of the decade, they haven't exactly taken the computer world by storm much like the iPhone/iPods did for media devices.

Side note, they should give me that 500m :P

lol, you gotta be kidding me dude. MS is worth that much. How can you say they are worth 50b and 250b at the same time? Publicly traded companies are measured in "Market Cap", which as of today, MS is worth 228 Billion. Apple could not buy MS. The most they could do is merge since they are around the same value (Apple is a bit higher), but that would never be allowed.

Market value for MS is $237 billion

To compare

Sony's market value is only $34 billion

MS as a company is worth so damn much it is crazy

This means MS could literally buy Sony and end the war between the two today but the SEC wouldn't allow it.

As of the end of todays trading, MS is worth $227.42 Billion. Assuming a min 20% buyout premium, it would take at least $270 Billion to acquire all of MS'shares.Majority control would be half that. A controlling interest is probably a third. Apple is currently sitting on approx $51 Billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities. Apple does not have the money and would require major debt financing to acquire MS or dilution thru stock swaps.

Apple is worth $279.59 Billion. It would take at least $330 Billion to acquire all Apple shares. MS is sitting on approx $44 Billion in cash or equivalents. MS does have the money and also would require debt financing or dilution.

Neither is capable of easily procuring the other. Both are in strong positions with large cash reserves to buy smaller entities. Those same cash reserves also make it impossible for a hostile takeover as each could buy back large volumes of their own shares.

Furthermore, whether the head of MS agrees or doesn't is not particularly relevant as it is the shareholders that have to decide to sell, not management.

The future death of MS is indeed always being thrown around with no substance and people will soon forget and make another clueless prediction within months of even weeks. In the meantime, MS keeps making ridiculous amounts of money.
