As soon as EA announced it had acquired BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios, the Xbox community wondered what would happen to the Mass Effect trilogy, which BioWare intended to begin and end on the Xbox 360 platform.

First, Microsoft Game Studios has confirmed that EA's acquisition of the developer of "Jade Empire" and "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" won't at all affect next month's release of Mass Effect. However, future games in this franchise are facing a dark horizon:

Microsoft has not yet announced specifics regarding sequels to "Mass Effect" but we'll be talking to EA and BioWare in the weeks to come. "Mass Effect" is the most anticipated role-playing game of the season, on any platform, and we are committed to the franchise's long term success.

When we asked about the ownership of the intellectual property, Microsoft confirmed that--unlike the Halo and Project Gotham Racing IPs, which are owned by Microsoft and not the respective developers--BioWare Corp. owns the Mass Effect IP.

/myself. But why didn't you post this in your other thread?

I guess EA being published won't hurt the quality, I mean look at Crysis.

Sadly this could be another Shenmue. I just hope Mass Effect ends well so the other two aren't missed too much and it's their last really great game before they start working on a new KOTOR every year.

Like i been saying in 7 or nine threads. lemmings are in denail. i said "ME is staying on 360 cause it's to late" but futre games have a question mark. i dunno what MS thinks there gonna get done with EA cause EA doesn't play that exclusive/timed exclusive game. I'm hyped to see what EA and Bioware make(my prediction is the best MMRPG ever with Console and PC player able to play on same servers.) Bioware is the perfect company to make a EA MMORPG. I don't think you can put Bioware on lvl with any other devs EA bought Bioware is hands down the best company they have. It's like they got Baby Blizzard.

Why is it too late? You can always port a game... I'm pretty sure a good port of ME to PS3 and PC would take less than a year.

Which means ME = 360 Exclusive (MS must have had an exclusive agreement)

wrong. it means for the time being it's exclusive remember an exclusive isn't really an exclusive there contracts that restrict the port for a certain period f months(like 4 months) what MS saying is nothing is changing the games gonna be exclusive this year and there will be no delays still good news for Lemmings your games exclusive this year and next year when it hits PC or PS3 you can say"haha i played it long time ago"

Thats how i comprehended it. Basically ME 1 = 360 exclusive. ME 2 and 3 = multiplat unless microsoft comes up with an agreement with EA. Didn't the article say the deal isn't final till january. By then ME will be out.

Well, Bioware OWNED it....now EA does, as well as owns Bioware. Mass Effect 2 and 3....if they are even released at all....will be multiplat. While that is good in the sense that more people will get to play it, it will be bad in the sense that Bioware will have the developmental process controlled by EA, which will unquestionably take away from what Bioware wants to do with the series.....because they will have no say so anymore. As they no longer own the game.

Mass Effect 1 may very well be Bioware's last true epic farewell swan song for consoles that they make as the real Bioware. We all knew deep down that this game was going to be special....now it will be a true collector's gem, and will no doubt be a historical game.....at least I think so.

All we can hope for at this point is that EA will give full creative control to Bioware, and then not only will more gamers get to play their games....but the games will not be overly lacking in quality either. But then, this is EA we are talking about here. We shall see.

Wow, that would save me from having to spend hundreds in upgrades on my PC..then I could play Bioshock/Orange Box/Alan Wake on 360. See I can do it too.

I think everyone knew BioWare owned the IP..the question is if it will be exclusive because of Microsoft is Publishing it.

Erm...don't cows despise Mass Effect?...D0013ER

I will speak for the cows on this one. Mass Effect is still boring and probaly score a 7.5 on Gamespot, but it's bitter sweet to see lemmings crying about ME going multiplat. This is payback for the DMC4.

Ah, you got your hands on an advance copy of Mass Effect, did you?

And don't speak for the cows, they speak enough for themselves.

The GameInformer review says different and they are a trusted mag. There was a thread on it earlier. 9.75 was the review. I think its safe to say ME will get AA at least. Also this isn't worse than DMC4 cause unlike ME DMC4 is a proven franchise that was only on playstation regarding consoles and not including the pc. ME is a brand new IP. Yes its by one of the greatest RPG devs around but it still has to be good and still has to live up to the hype.

Um, how exactly are future ME games "facing a dark horizon"? Whoever's publishing them, the sequels will come out regardless. It's not like the game is going to get scrapped and we won't be able to play them. Stop with the ridiculous melodrama.

360 exclusive. Microsoft is not gonna let Mass Effect go so easy, to big of a blow for them, maybe it could go to the pc but never the ps3 or wii....HAHAH wii.....poor piece of crap. Anyways

tacubano

Despite my disagreeance with it not coming to the PS3, I lol'd at the wii comment. Hilarious!

ME could very well be ported to PS3. Though, it may take a year. *shrug*. It'd be nice, but I am impartial. I wasn't falling into the hype completely when it was for the 360. That hasn't changed. I'm not the kind of person that hypes a game based on what console it's on. (at least not anymore). And I rarely hype a game to the extent of claiming AAA, or GOTY.

And whether or not ME comes to the PS3 is moot, but definitely not a huge deal to me. The cow in me wants it to happen for the same reason most Lems want MGS4 on the 360, just for the pure ownage. But really, I don't think I'd buy ME anyway if it came out. it just doesn't seem like a game I'd enjoy. Thats not to say its crap, or that it's going to suck. It's just not my flavor.

So, repressing my inner cow, This news sucks for gaming, because its yet another case of money ruling video games. It seems thats the case with everything now a days. But thats a post for a different thread, which I'll make now.. hehe.

Maybe I will get Mass Effect II for PC. Mass Effect actually gives my 360 a purpose to exist.

It means that considering EA's reputation for releasing half a$$ed games, the sequels could be utter garbage compared to the first one. We won't know how good the first one is though till it comes out.

Come on man, Nerds in space suits? Making love to aliens? Exploring galaxies? That's has boring written all over it. I hope EA spice it up a little to make it "mainstream". Maybe have John Madden as the narrator of the story.

No. He is stating that the release on the 360 is unaffected by this. But, because EA owns ME, they can easily publish a PS3 port.

Nagidar

No, thats not what its saying, its saying that ME will stay 360 exclusive, for FFS its published by MS, even this: "However, future games in this franchise are facing a dark horizon: "

FUTURE games, which in that statement also says ME will stay MS exclusive, but other games in the franchise are up in the air.

Do you honestly think Microsoft would say Mass Effect is going to face a dark horizon? No. That is the TC's words.

LOL, are you familiar with the term "creative freedom"? Well, that is something that Bioware has more than likely lost now that EA now owns everything that is Bioware. Hence, all developmental decisions on Bioware games will now have to go through EA instead of Bioware being able to do what the hell they want with their games....well, what used to be their games that is.

In short, Bioware will not make games like the Bioware we all know and love, unless EA gives them complete creative control. Which is fairly unlikely considering this is EA we are talking about here.

Cows & lemmings will be getting one AMAZING RPG.

Good day for both sides if EA brings ME to the PS3.

well as a lemming i'll accept total ownage right now. this hurts. since this is friggin' EA we're talking about, i see no possibility for ME to stay exclusive to the 360.
