[QUOTE="---OkeyDokey---"][QUOTE="_koolgirl_"]

[QUOTE="---OkeyDokey---"]look i'll dumb it down a bit sony managed to break into the market with tonnes of big games that propelled the success of the console and brand name. microsofts consoles haven't taken off because they so far lack games with large widespread appeal. im just saying that if ms wants to outdo its competitors it needs more games with halo levels of success which they are lacking.BatmanBegins24

Right, but games like Gears of War, Bioshock and Mass Effect obviously don't count in your eyes. You speak of the new great IPs that PS1/2 brought, yet ignore the ones MS have brought (are bringing)out.

oh......my.........god.......... i know those games exist but not they wont expand the xboxs appeal to europe and japan where the system isnt doing well. the games you mention will get 80% of their sales in NA its like talking to a brick wall sometimes

Do you know why Nintendo and Sony appeal to Japan? Because they are Japanese companies! Japanese game-makes know what Japanese people like.It just happens to be a coincidence that the Americans,Japanese, and Europeans all like Japanese games. While American games appeal mostly to jost America and Europe. And actually Gears of War sold very well for an Xbox 360 game in Japan.

Sorry for quoting myself but another reason why western games do poorly in Japan is because of poor marketing and translation. And the reason why allot have poor marketing and translation is because they sell poorly so the companies think it isn't worth it.They are stuck in a rut.Until there is a western FPS with great translation and marketing, western game are going to continue to do poorly in Japan.

It's more like the Wii needs some big franchises. Not say their current first party games aren't big, but they need some good 3rd party franchises.hotdaisy18

agree'd...and i like your signature!

i think its really sad that lemmings cant take something even remotely negative.

im not even a cow and im not bashing anything.

im just comparing microsoft to sony when they broke into the market with the playstation. they became the market leader with tonnes of huge new ips and some already popular franchises that drove sales of the console. xbox lack games like this which is basically why i think the360 has already been passed by the wii and why its not successful overseas.i dontget what doesnt make sense about that.

you people obviously dont understand the way the market works so i wont ever bother trying to get this across.

Halo, Mass Effect, Too Human, Blue Dragon (yes, it will be a popular franchise despite some fanboys hope to shoot it down), Lost Odyssey, Gears of War, Crackdown, Forza, Perfect Dark (yes, it's still a successful franchise, AAA), Kameo, Viva Pinata, and Banjo.

It looks like they have games for every genre and every age.

Nutjobjim pretty much sums it all for you all. being that not even one of Sony's big franchises have come out yet on the PS3 and it is still such a huge competitor, this is a very good argument.

yep, im glad nutjobjim actually knows what im talking about and makes some decent contribution.

mass effect bioshock too human is all anyone else has to say. they just dont understand.

theres a reason why the 360 has fallen behind.

They are definitely expanding their list. THey've pumped more money into Too Human the the publishers for Shenmue did for that game.

Dude, I totally see where you're comming from. If MS didn't have Halo and GoW, the 360 would stop selling immediately. There's absolutely nothing driving the sales of the 360 besides Halo 3. Word.

Sigh...

Franchise - requires time and 2 or more iterations. Is determined by the past. Hard to predict which new IPs will become franchises.

Xbox had a number of very good games.

Xbox360 has quite a few good games as well.

Franchises can be bought, enticed, or developed from scratch.

Halo is a franchise. Gears is not yet a full fledged franchise, but could become one and looks very well positioned to do so. GTA is a bought franchise. There are at least 10 new IPs or enticed franchises out there ranging from Lost Odyssey, to Banjo, to Mass Effect to Ninja Gaiden

Franchises do not need to simultaneously appeal to all markets; in fact they rarely sell equally across all markets.

Indeed, the most important thing to keep in mind is that individuals make individual decisions based upon a composite of hardware reputation, hardware price, game library, expectations of future game library, and individual games.

I for one don't give a damn about Japanese gaming. It is completely irrelevant to me what Japanese gamers like or dislike. Similarly, I expect the vast majority of Japanese gamers don't give a damn about what I like. Uber cross cultural franchises are very rare and are not needed. Games for N Americans are needed if you want to sell to N Americans. Games for Japanese are needed to sell in Japan. Yet, thereare all sorts of Japanese franchises on different platforms that I know nothing about, nor care to know anything about.

The Xbox did poorly in Japan for a number of reasons, one of which was the lack of games that appealled to the Japanese. Those games did not need to be uber cross-cultural franchises they just needed to appeal to Japan.

The moral is: one size rarely fits all.

You are standing at the cliff looking backwards at the past. It is very easy to identify the franchises looking backwards. It is almost impossible looking forwards. If it were possible you would be a $Billionaire since you would be able to predict exactly which games are going to sell what quantity and where.

But you aren't a billionaire. And therefore, your opinion is no more informed than anyone else's.

PS3 represents a very strong franchise...the Playstation brand. Its launch has been horrifyingly awful for Sony. Did you predict that?

Microsofts started over when making franchises for the 360 because they want to new more next gen games.
