Lets begin by looking at gaming before the launch of the Original Xbox.

The PS2....a weak system with no On-line gaming.

The launch of the Xbox offered something never thought of before. PC gaming on your living room tv. The very idea seemed ridiculous, but Microsoft was confident and they had the craziest idea of On-line multiplayer on a console.

The Xbox started off slow, but grew huge interest with the launch of the new ip Halo - Combat Evolved which was a major success. At this time the Xbox's On-line was there but hardly used. Mostly for sports games and what not. Not a lot of people saw any interest in Xbox Live. Later with the launch of Halo 2 it became clear that Xbox Live was the platform for On-line gaming of the future. Halo 2's huge success brought forth new ideas for On-line gaming and established Xbox Live's name.

Sony of course launched their LAN add-on for the PS2. It's popular title Socom did okay, but the horrible On-line experience of the PS2 only helped Microsoft's Xbox LIVE sell more subscriptions as well as consoles.

If it was not for Microsoft's intervention I don't imagine Sony ever creating anything innovative or impressive. Today PSN is still a mess with less features and a lot less creativity.

Consumers made their choice and they choose Microsoft's Xbox 360.

I hope Microsoft will always remain a key role in the gaming industry. Their dedication to bringing entertainment to the living room with the Xbox is one of their greatest achievements.

Microsoft just copied PC gaming. And, in doing so, helped to sink gaming standards across the board by encouraging the dilution of separate game design philosophies.

All M$ has done is follow someone else and they really haven't brought anything new to gaming. As much as I don't care for PC gaming I know they invented on-line gaming.

Its not a matter of "who did it first", its a matter of "who did it best" :)

And no, just because Sega had online doesn't mean that Microsoft would have never though of it afterwards.

With all that was going against the PS3 from day one they have done great. Also they just recently passed the first year mark in the PAL region remember the PS3 wasn't released in the PAL region until March of 2007. Then they had a high price tag when it was released. It didn't have any games until late 2007 to speak of but yet it's been gaining on the 360 at a steady rate. So with all this it's doing just fine.

Ok i'll go along with the fact that Microsoft revolutionized " ONLINE GAMING " but thats it, and there so proud of themselves that their now charging their loyal 360 fanbase for the privilege, gee thanks Microsoft.

Well i know it's an ancient arguement by now, but i still would rather have a less smooth online interface on PSN or whatever you think Live has over PSN and play online for free instead of having to pay for it.

Besides Sony's constantly updating and improving the experience we enjoy on PSN and we still have no fee, and we won't have a fee even when Home is released. so i still prefer playing online for free even if it's minus a few bells and whistles who cares ?

Bingo this what so many on here just can't get a grip on. M$ revolutionized charging it's customers to use there service and trying make it a standard with all game systems. That is a big reason not to support them in any way.

Who cares about the genesis? Why dont you stop nit picking. LIve was the first "CONSOLE" online break tru, meaning popular, people used it, brought online gaming to consoles a standard. Wow the more Im in system wars the more I notice none of you make any kind of sense and only see what you want to. It seems like people purposely say things just to disagree even if there wrong.

Most people didn't/don't have phone lines running back to the TV. We got wireless now.

They did have coax in the back of their TV's. Sega channel used this and you could get several MB games in just a few mins (usally less then 5).

You guys need to learn your gaming history... Sega Genesis was the console that did it all before others.

Look up Xband modem and Sega channel.

Best console ever... I don't care what anyone else says.

I really dont know why I come to this site anymore.

Again, Dreamcast. PSO!

Plus, XBox would not have online if it weren't for the Dreamcast.

Microsoft was inspired by PC gaming to do online, not Dreamcast.

Microsoft bought the online infrastructure from Sega so that they could use it for their Xbox.

Microsoft just copied PC gaming. And, in doing so, helped to sink gaming standards across the board by encouraging the dilution of separate game design philosophies.mjarantilla
