Microsoft 'rounding up answers' on Xbox One's DRM stance

Major Nelson says Microsoft is putting together a definitive list of answers to lingering Xbox One questions, and that "they look pretty good."

Microsoft has said it is "listening" to the various complaints and concerns surrounding the unveiling of its next-generation Xbox One console last week.

Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb said that Microsoft is readying up a series of answers relating to key concerns over DRM, the need for the console to check in online, and a perceived lack of focus from Microsoft on gaming.

Responding to a critical statement on Twitter, Hryb said, "I am working on rounding up answers, and they look pretty good. Once I have them all I'll make a post."

"And yes, we are listening," he asserted.

Many core questions about the nature of the Xbox One currently remain unanswered by Microsoft at this point, though the company has repeatedly assured gamers to wait for E3. The company earlier this week tried to calm fears about users' privacy surrounding the Xbox One's new Kinect sensor.

Last week Hryb said that "reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future." A previous report had said Microsoft and the original publisher will receive a cut of every used game sold in stores.

Microsoft executive Aaron Greenberg has said the company's E3 showing will "get it right."

I'm getting really pissed off at MS for not just coming out with answers, but looks like they'll FINALLY tell us EXACTLY what to expect, instead of speculation/misunderstandings/rumors we've been getting as of lately.

Short of the answer being that there will be no DRM, no Required online, and no required kinect then they have forever lost a game console customer and maybe even an OS customer.

Hopefully they get their arse handed to them & back off doing some of this crap on x1. 

They should be no need to 'round up' anything. Although I am seriously surprised, I now realize they were caught off guard at the shear hostility they received from the initial announcement and are now doing their best to damage control. How they can be so out of touch to not expect this, I don't know, but they were definitely not expecting this or they would have already had all these answers prepared ahead of time.DerekLoffin

I don't see how they were caught off guard by the reaction. The whole Adam Orth thing showed them what people thought of a console requiring a internet connection. M$ didn't care what people thought and went ahead with their plan anyway.

It's simple, MS is going too far with crap on x1. I have no idea how they can get away with Kinect being always on and spying on consumers habits to know how to advertise to them. That's violating consumers privacy in their homes. 

Essentially spyware taken to a higher level.

I feel the same way about PS4 and DRM. I'm going Wii U and PC if that happens.

Probably because no one has the balls to make a definitive answer yet. Sony is dodging the issues also. So I guess it is expected that MS will do the same thing. Both seem to be waiting for the other to take the plunge.

Sadly I doubt that E3 will bring us any closer to a definitive answer from either company. I would expect a lot more side stepping of the issues from both sides.  We probably won't know the truth until the fall.

If anyone is expecting MS to reneg on this and reverse the decision of the used game fee, I would think they would be in for a disappointment.

This is most likely a multi million, if not billion, dollar deal that was likely made at least a year or more ago with publishers.

This is why I think at this point, sadly, that SONY will have to follow suit if they want to maintain dev support.

If SONY has no used games fee, why on earth would anyone want to release any disc based games on the system if developing for MS would net them substantially more money in the long run?

Sony will never have to follow this. They already said the publishers can do what they want (like they have always been able to do) but Sony 1st party games will work the same as they always have.

Well it's quite clear as to why we aren't getting straight answers. MS are probably going to u-turn on what they originally said. They are good enough at business to know when to swallow their pride and back off.

When the whole industry is unimpressed, they won't go ahead with the product anyway, without changes, they're not Nintendo (Wii U). Unless MS are stupid, they know that it will cost them the gen if they continue with those policies. And they're simple things to rectify, they just require MS to swallow their pride.
