what do you PC gamers think?

Microsoft says tablets will outsell PCs next year

Comments 26 Adam Oxford at 02:41pm June 27 2012

More Surface news today, and while we know that Microsoft is very proud of the tablets that they announced last week, it still may come as a surprise to find out just how popular the company thinks slates will be. Speaking at TechEd Europe in Amsterdam last night, VP for Windows Web Services Antoine Leblond claimed that by the end of next year, more tablets will be sold than desktop PCs.

Is it time for PC gamers to panic?

I?d argue not. Tablets outselling PCs might seem like a dramatic statement from Microsoft, but it?s not actually news. Apart from the fact semantic objection that laptops are the bulk of the PC market anyway, the company has been making optimistic predictions about tablets for the last 12 years. Its latest pronouncement on things will probably come to pass: analysts have been suggesting the same thing for a few months now, and there?s just one problem with the forecasts for Redmond.

The vast majority of tablets aren?t going to be running Windows.

According to IDC?s latest quarterly report into tablet and PC sales (released last week), the number of tablets sold is expected to hit 107.4 million by the end of 2012, rising to 142.8 million by 2013. IDC actually desktop PCs pegged to sell fractionally more than that in the same timescale ? 161.5m units in 2013 ? but there are other analysts whose figures back up Microsoft.

IDC, however, predicts a split of 60.8% iPads and 38.3% Android in the tabelt market, even by 2016. That leaves very little space for Windows devices. Admittedly, these figures were drawn up before Surface was announced and analysts have been pretty dreadful at forecasting tablet sales so far, but there are plenty of other high quality Windows tablets we did know about that they presumably based their thoughts on. The biggest problem for Windows tablets (other than iPad) is that Amazon and Google are both rumoured to be about to announce high quality Android competitors for Surface at a prices no Windows tablets can match.

Far be it from me to suggest Microsoft may be missing something in the stats, but there was something arguably more important for use, at least, in the IDC figures. I rather hope PC games developers picked up on them though.

Sales of tablets are incredible, but sales of laptops and desktops are still rising. Even in Europe and the US, where desktop sales are expected to decline, IDC thinks the number of laptops will increase by 10% between 2012 and 2013, and that by 2016 the total number of portable and desktop PCs sold worldwide will increase by nearly 45% over last year.

Before you get too excited though, every silver lining has a cloud. Analysts at Gartner have just released a statement to the effect that they believe Windows 8 is, to paraphrase, a death knell traditional desktop computing.

Michael Silver, Gartner Vice President, said ?[Windows 8] is also the beginning of the end of Win32 applications on the desktop.? He did add that he expected the desktop to be around for ten years or so yet, but the point is that developers who are making apps and games for WinRT will be the ones that receive most support from Microsoft in the future. Personally, I think the bigger problem is that Microsoft isn?t planning on making an easy way for WinRT apps (the Metro ones) to run on older versions of Windows ? that would surely encourage indie developers to look at it more favourably as a platform for selling games.

Incidentally, one of the best write ups about Surface I?ve seen yet, which looks at the reasons behind Microsoft wanting to become a hardware vendor, is at Asymco. The breakdown of relative operating profits between software and hardware is especially interesting (that link came via this one).

The thing about that is PCs generally tend to last from 2-5 years, while the average tablet tends to last from 1-2 years before a much better tablet is released, so of course their sales will overcome those of PCs, because their hardware becomes obsolete much quicker.

In fact, I plan on getting a Nexus 7 and Surface tablet next year, while I have no plans to get a new PC in the foreseeable future, because the one I currently have is still perfectly usuable and up to date technologically.

People aren't buying new PC's once every one to two years, so Tablets should outsell PC anyway.

By PCs do they mean pre-built? because I can imagine that happening. but I don't think it will outsell people buying individual components and putting there PCs together themselves. PC hardware sales are massive.

It doesn't mean anything to me.

I have a laptop when I need full PC functionality on the road.

I have a desktop PC for doing heavyweight work like video-editing and making huge databases. Those and gaming.

The only thing a tablet will replace for me is my netbook. Otherwise, a tablet is only meant to complement what I already have, not replace them. Even Apple's philosophy about the iPad is the same way. It's merely a complement to a full-blown Mac desktop/laptop.

I do plan to buy a tablet soon. It'll be used mainly when I'm in the campus adding to course projects and assignments. Once I get home, I move those projects and assignments to me desktop PC because working on a tablet (or even a laptop) is slow going for me. When I'm on my desktop PC, I can work at full speed.

This has literally zero effect on PC gaming. That's like saying netbooks will kill off PC gaming. Tablets simply provide another form of portable gaming. For a very long while, until technology has hit a "performance cap" and can only focus on reducing size of components, they will lack the power to render games even at console quality.

It's all about money.

PC gaming is getting killed /because/ it's too good.

There's not enough profit in it for the major players, they'll do whatever they can to kill PC gaming.

- They want you to buy hardware more often

- They want software not to last forever, they don't want eternal backwards compatibility and 8000 mods, they want to be able to sell DLC's and hi-def remakes, not have the community get it for free.

- Piracy still a huge economic issue

- They want you to pay for online service

- The major players want a cut from the games you buy, they're not ok with people making games in C++ and being able to sell it without a publisher.

PC gaming has been awesome for the 2 decades that I was involved in it. Just pure awesome.

But the next 5-10 years are going to be brutal.

You can hate me all you want for telling you the truth, but that's not going to change anything.

Tablets outselling PC's doesn?t really affect PC Gaming in the short term. They are two very different devices after all. Long term things become more up in the air. There?s a few things I believe that guess at:

- The way we use computers, consoles and electronics is going to change completely over the next decade or two.

- Just because traditional desktop PC's disappear, there's no reason to think that PC Gaming will disappear. PC Gaming is not really tied to a specific platform or operating system. The market will change and gamers will change with it.

- Consoles are just as affected by this.

- With the explosions in performance we're seeing from both tablets, mobile phones, TV's and Laptops I don?t think the main limiting factor in game development will be lack of machine horsepower if you look a decade or two into the future. The ability to profit from your work is going to be the real challenge: How to convert free to play into profit. It?ll be a problem for both consoles, mobile gamers and PC Gamers.. of course those groups might fuse together over time....

- I'm not sure that PC Gamer / Console Gamer will make sense 10 years from now. I think that we'll see a fusion of the gaming groups. There's going to be little reason to have a dedicated game console by the TV when you can stream content and games from one central machine in the house. There's going to be little reason for a desktop PC when tablets and phones can be hooked up to a monitor and keyboard and provide the needed performance to perform everyday tasks.

Lot?s of will speculation of course, but I think the whole premise of PC Gamers and Console Gamers will be a thing of the past within a relatively short span of years.

Maybe, maybe not,but yes, many find tablets as a good replacement for mainstream every day PC usage like Net browsing, etc, since you don't have to use a bulky desktop or a laptop for such simple tasks anymore, you can just use a very small and easy to carry device like a tablet...

But when it comes to the PC gaming market, this prediction is totally irrelevant,no matter the outcome...

Growth rates like these are a bit misleading.

The PC desktop market is SATURATED. Everyone in the friggin world owns one. And yet it STILL sells over 350 million each year.

Smartphones, and specially tablets are a much younger market, with incredible room to expand.

I'd be suprised if they weren't going to vertake PC sales at some point.

that doesn't mean jack about the actual use of tradional PC's though.

One thing the articles do not address is the user. Do they really expect people who do real work to flock to these mobile devices? If you have a ton of work to do on a desktop PC and the IT department suddenly replaces that desktop PC with a tablet, do they really expect the user to just switch? Think how much backlog will be generated and how many additional manhours will be required if using a tablet.

These journalists need to think like a Systems Analyst before writing these articles.

This IS a big issue. Usuallly these guys are journalists, and their idea of working is writing into a word document. So anythign that can even kind of-sorta do that, they think is the end all be all of computing.

A laptop is still a PC. Once laptop price to performance ratios drop to near PC desktops, I too will do more gaming on a laptop. I can simply hook it up to an HDTV/bigger PC monitor and add a full-sized keyboard and mouse.

It's only that price-performance ratio that's stopping me.

As long as Windows remains an open system anyone can develop for, PC gaming will remain.

As long as there is hardware that system runs on, PC gaming will remain.

That the vast majority of PC users aren't PC gamers means little. (And yeah, surface looks cool. I wouldn't mind one...full fat Pro or bust, however...)

There is, but smartphones have been outselling PCs for few years now and that didn't have any negative effect on PC sales.

Rise of tablets popularity is ultimatelly largely meaningless when it comes to it's effect on PC users and especially PCgamers, because even the most optimistic pro-tablets analysts think PCs sales and userbase will also increase, regardless of tablet's explosion of popularity.
