I can definitely see that happening.

The sun has practically already set on the desktop and is dipping toward the horizon for laptops. Tablets and hybrids are the future. It's not a future I'm in love with but I can't see it as anything other than an inevitability at this point.

My iPad has replaced my PC for pretty much everything.... except games. Games are the only reason I turn it on now.

[QUOTE="MBirdy88"][QUOTE="Click_Clock"]

Gaming on Microsoft's Windows (PC) sucks, I rather game on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. I think more people in System Wars will agree with me.

Click_Clock

Give it up already.... your not funny, interesting or good at trolling hermits.

MBirdy88 =scaled.php?server=222&filename=10311280b

Can't handle other people's view, so what if I don't like Microsoft Windows OS to play my games on and rather game on Microsoft Xbox 360?

trying... too.... hard.

The thing about that is PCs generally tend to last from 2-5 years, while the average tablet tends to last from 1-2 years before a much better tablet is released, so of course their sales will overcome those of PCs, because their hardware becomes obsolete much quicker.

In fact, I plan on getting a Nexus 7 and Surface tablet next year, while I have no plans to get a new PC in the foreseeable future, because the one I currently have is still perfectly usuable and up to date technologically.

DerpyMcDerp

That makes no sense, An Ipad 1 is still usable, according to your logic as soon as a new piece of hardware is out the previous hardware is unusable. SO when a new GPU, Mobo, SSD hell even case comes out my PC is outdated? Works both ways you biggot

People said the same thing about smartphones. How many PC's do you think an average household needs ? like 2. If you have a family of 4, everyone in your family will probably have a smartphone. Not to mention people tend to have phones laying around their houses all the time. Windows 8 Tablet Hybrids are essentially going to be PC's anyways. Tablets are also more accessible for children, seniors etc. than traditional PC's or even laptops.

He worded this wrong, but his conclusion is correct. It's not so much about being unusable or lasting, but the fact is that tablets life cycle is much shorter than PC. Tablets, like smartphones are percieved as gadgets, unlike PC, so there;s much more of a lust factor. iPad 1 still works well, but most users of it want to switch to new iPad, if they didn't already.

Analysts agree with what I wrote. They predict that by 2016 tablets wmight finally be outselling PCs annually. But at the same time, when they do, there will be 750 mln tablets in use (about twice as much as annual sales) vs 2 billion PCs in use.

PCs currently got into such point where they easily last 4-5 years. What's more, the sales data is completely useless for desktops, because all it counts is sales of new branded PCs. So it doesn't count in sales of PCs people built themselves (or paid computer shop to built) and don't count upgrades.

@NoodleFighter Laptop PCs already out sells desktop PCs. My next laptop would most likely be a high performance tablet hybrid PC and hopefully with AMD Kaveri APU.

and it was, the only persons it wasn't good for were people trying to run it on 10 year old hardware and expected 20 year old software that hadn't been updated in 15 years by even the community to work.

Of course it will. Tablets are hot on the market. There's a large demographic that has yet to own one, compared to a Home Personal Computer.

for consumption in general the tablet will more than likely take over, as an item used for productive tasks it wont take over anytime soon unless it were a hybrid.

I tried that logic at home. The wife insisted on having a new desktop PC for working at home, her own laptop for times we went traveling, plus her own netbook for times when she took college courses. The same thing with the kid. She's a big Adobe Photoshop buff. She sometimes do Photoshop stuff on her laptop when she's hogging the family room TV. But, her main preference for Photoshop is her desktop PC (with a Wacom tablet device). She raised a big stink when I donated her old desktop PC to charity even though she already has a laptop. That's why I had to loan her my second PC in my sig. They both liked tablets although none of them wanted to have their desktop PCs replaced with one.

That's why I wonder how people can even think tablets will replace desktop PCs. Laptops may replace desktop PCs someday since bigger external monitors and keyboards can be hooked up to them. Laptop processing power too is up to par. But, tablets? Heck, a tablet would probably choke on even a moderately sized database.

The people who may see tablets replace desktop PCs are those who don't do any real computer work with their devices such as the iPod/iPhone crowd. For them, a tablet is just a bigger iPod. There is still a huge segment who'll need fullblown desktop PCs for work especially in big companies. I'd like to see their IT departments try to replace desktop PCs in the workplace and see how much outcry it generates.

Well your wife is in the industry that requires a decent computer, someone using a Wacom tablet and largely into design/illustration will want a desktop with a large monitor or 2.... you don't really need the power though. But the netbook and laptop seperate? why bother. This is Microsoft Surface being advertised not iPad. It does the job of both of those things. hell even in the live demo thier file transfer speed was faster than my desktop pc with Q6600 at 3GHZ ... its packing a very decent i5, no slouch. when it can do both the portability of a netbook and the tasks of a laptop... why choose any other? meanwhile having the advantages of a tablet thrown in as well. Desktops will never be completely replaced due to the nature of industrial work benefits from power/larger work space. but for every day productivity and entertainment/consumption ... hybrid tablets are the future..... too many benefits, too portable... too feature packed from all aspects.

Yes I know. but that is more than enough to run ALL tablet games, quite a few modern games, and then some higher production games on lower. and it is more than enough to suit pretty much any other purpose. Traditional Desktop gaming wont be that good, but a giant back catalogue + mobile gaming will be. I may be abit biased though, as I find laptop gaming crap in general even with a good one, just feels wrong, never bothering with a "Gaming Laptop" ever again. Will stick to Desktop + Surface.

Nice performance, but the device itself.... yeesh, something apple does to right is build quality, surface represents that kind of success, for the sake of better performance on games that will run like ass anyway (like in that video) I would rather a better quality device for everyday use. To each their own, but just like consoles and handhelds I find fighting over specs pointless, its just who has the shinier turd in that regaurd.

Due to Toyota's "hybrid" Prius marketing, PC world also started to use the "hybrid" word.
