Microsoft's Peter Moore was interviewed by GameDaily BIZ where he states that Sony's PS3 is failing due to the massive success the Wii has had.

When asked on the 360 specifically about the importance of Japan to the global console battle, he fired back, "That's probably a better question for Sony who's getting outsold by what, 6-to-1? You can bet that Sony built a long-term business plan about being successful in Japan and that business plan is crumbling."

Yes, the PS3 is being crushed in Japan by the Wii. Will Sony be able to turn things around with games like Final Fantasy XIII and Gran Turismo 5?

"I think the plan we have built, that calls for cost reductions in hardware, clearly gives us an advantage in price that actually allows us to get to [lower] price points much sooner than Sony will. They can have a '10-year plan' all they like, but it's executing that plan and getting to the mass market with price points [that matters], and I feel a lot closer to being able to do that than they do right now."

Possible 360 price drop coming soon?

What do you guys think?

Maybe someone should remind him that they had to extend the warranty on the 360 for 3 more years because there is a chance they will all die.

The leader of the entire Xbox platform is hiding behind the Wii. I don't think the lemmings have anymore right to say the words 'hiding behind' to anyone ever again.

Nah. Their business can't really "crumble" when it has yet to be built up. Sony, on the other hand, managed to make a pile of dirt out of an empire.

MS should probably work on getting some business in Japan before worrying about Sony's.

Sony is indeed getting dominated in Japan, but Peter Moore has no right to say it. The 360 is doing even worse than the PS3 in Japan. Both systems have shown abysmal sales up to this point.

The news of a possible 360 price drop is pleasing. If the price does drop and the Falcon chips turn out reliable, I'll get a 360.

Of course it is easy for Moore to say those things when you got a big brother giving you a blank check every year.

ps3's big bro has a middle-class income and 360's big bro has an upper-class income.

Out of all of the execs, I hate Moore-on the most.  He is just too full of himself.  And I love how he answered the question!  The question was how is MS going to succeed in Japan... and he comments on how well the Wii is selling to PS3?  Nice dodge, jack#$%!  And why even bring up the Wii--they are not competing with Sony of MS--even N said this.  They are going after a different market.

He dodged the question because the 360 is beyond tanking in Japan--and that is the way it will always be.  They are not interested in a system that does not offer them the games that they enjoy.

I really really don't like this guy.  He is such a tool.  I vote him worst exec ever!!  Look at him, he is the poster child for a cocky villian in a cheezy B rated movie.  MS should really let this guy go, as he is just going to present them in a bad light.

I agree that MS is happy Nintendo is beating Sony in Japan since I think they still think PS3 is the biggest threat to the 360's success considering they are targeting almost indentical markets.

As for the Wii60 issue, I don't think MS is too keen on the Wii:

IGN: Microsoft says Wii is for babies.

DailyTech: Microsoft says Xbox 1 is graphically superior to Wii.

Of course, I don't think anyone expected to see the Wii sell as well as it has so it's no surprise that Microsoft or Sony would comment negatively on the Wii.

There's no question that the Xbox business has struggled from the get go in Japan. According to the Famitsu Marketing Data Service, the Xbox 360 has only sold 122,565 units through the first half of the year in Japan

But comment he did. In an interview conducted at E3 last week, GameDaily BIZ asked Moore about the state of Xbox in Japan and he decided to turn the question on its side, taking aim at his competition. When asked specifically about the importance of Japan to the global console battle, he fired back, "That's probably a better question for Sony who's getting outsold by what, 6-to-1? You can bet that Sony built a long-term business plan about being successful in Japan and that business plan is crumbling."

He added, "I built a business plan [for Japan], but I don't think my expectations in Japan were anything close to what Sony's expectations are. They are failing. They're missing their plan by much more than I'm missing my plan."

Of course, we wouldn't be so bold to say that Sony's business in Japan is "crumbling," but the numbers do show that the Wii (as alluded to by Moore) outsold the PS3 by 6-to-1 during the month of June. The disparity isn't quite as great on a first-half basis. The Wii has sold around 1.78 million units in Japan during the first six months of 2007 compared to just 504K for the PS3. Still, the expectations for the Xbox and Xbox 360 have always been somewhat low in Japan, and certainly Sony could never have thought that their new console would be outsold at such as clip by Nintendo's new Wii.

the enlarged print basically tells the story.

Peter Moore is the new Ken Kutaragi.

The funny thing is that he says they've been playing the "cost reduction game" and that's their advantage. Um, no, Pete, that's not the case. $1 billion off the latest warranty extension, FIXING problematic manufacturing and engineering issues instead of modifying them for efficiency, and LOSING money on each console sold.

That would be a formula for loss as far as price wars go. Sony, as I understand it, actually has more wiggle room. They've already implemented the 65nm and it should begin production soon or already has (whereas Microsoft is still undertaking this and it should arrive later this fall), they've removed the Emotion engine, and they've cleared up blue laser diode issues, meanwhile outsourcing some of their materials to lower production costs. And they're cutting a profit on each console sold.

It is exceedingly clear that Peter is referring to the price point from which they begin ($400) rather than how far they will be able to reduce the price. With regards to how far they will be able to reduce the price, Sony is ahead by $100 and given they're still cutting a profit on every $500 60 gig sold, I suppose that they've got room for the luxury of dropping it further, within an even shorter timeframe than Microsoft.

Sony CAN play the price game.

Although it's true that Sony doesn't have as market share as they should have by now in Japan and that Microsoft never really set up much business in Japan so far, I still think they aren't in a good position to be talking about this.

From a businesspoint of viewhe's absolutely right. Nintendo and MS are playing a different game from Sony this gen. Yes all 3 want to win the generation, but what is a win from their perspective. If Nintendo and MS can increase their marketshare and take marketshare away from Sony, they win. Sony only wins if they manitain their marketshare.

As many on here have said, and Moore even says in the one bit, MS had much different expectations in Japan than Sony did. If they are selling better than last gen(which I have no idea) and if sony is loosing marketshare(which they are) then they are winning in business terms.

Why's that? What he said has a ring of truth to it. Yeah, the 360 ain't exactly flying off the shelves in Japan either, but we'll get a better indication of how things will play out once the 360 price drops in Japan, along with more games that will hopefully attract Japanese gamers.

Do you know how cheap 360 is in Japan? I mean hardware AND software, its almost exactly the same price as the Wii.

The Xbox brand never did well in Japan, so its not surprising. Whats surprising is when a company like Sony (who was at the top of their game) crumbles and becomes as bad or even worse than an American company like Microsoft in their own turf, Japan. Sony PS3 is dead last in this video gaming gen, its unbelievable, but you better believe it.

The only reason the Japanese don't buy the PS3 is because it's an American product. You see the Japanese are VERY nationalistic so if SONY was from Japan then they'd buy it like crazy.
