[QUOTE="dooly420"]how did Microsoft surrender?PS_Family

By talking of possible deals with Sony to use its technology. That contradicts former statements that Blu-Ray is not the winner or necessary for gaming.

It's in the news section.

I highly doubt Blu ray for the XBOX 360 is going to be used for gaming at all. Only for Blu ray movies like the HDDVD addon which was only for movies and not games. PS3 has yet to even show why it needs Blu ray, short games *laughs* MGS4 is just piled with high def audio and cutscenes. The game no doubt will be 10 hours long. All that waiting for a measly 10 hours. :(

See, this is something else thats annoying. Idiots blaming Sony for the games that are on PS3. It is not up to Sony, but the developers to make "long" games. Besides, there have never been long games like people are whining about. The only time a game is long is if its an RPG, Fighting, or Online title. People need to quit having unrealistic expectations. There has NEVER been a 60 hour action game, get over it, you people act so spoiled.

lol secret deals? first off i must say that avatar is great you picked only the 3rd kraziest kenny type exec at sony to use.

But yeah secret deals? lol its not secret its well known.

And needed? um no its not been proven as needed at all for a game yet, and the only reason its needed for movies is resolution and uncompressed sound in movies and by the time it is truely needed for a game system, the next xbox will be out in the next 2-3 years and it will have a faster blu ray drive then the ps3 lol.
(resolution in games is not dependent upon disc space)

LOL you sidestepped every thing else i said because you have no answer oh and kojima? creating a game in an none AAA franchise using massive uncompressed audio 1% of the human population can take advantage of, and likely CGI high def cutscenes, high def resolutions in games are not dependent upon disk size only high resolution movie is dependent upon this.

MGS is an AAA series outside of Gamespot.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, then I remembered that there is Metal Gear Solid Online to mess around with. That should extend the life of the game considerably. Wouldn't it be funny though if it ended up being produced and sold on a seperate disc? It would be worse than what MS charges for most downloadable content.

Your point? A good Gamespot score means better overall ranking. The MGS series is 90+ on GameRankings.

HD gamming encompasses HD video, HD graphics and HD audio. HD video is not a necessity since developers have been using the amazing graphics consoles can produce today to make CGI level cutscenes using real-time rendering, But HD audio is a necessity of HD gamming and it requires a LOT of space.

PS_Family

Kojima filled a Blu-ray disc because:

1. He doesn't want to compress his audio. Fine, but I never find myself listening to well-compressed audio (read: NOT your 128k MP3s) and saying, "this would be better uncompressed."

2. He doesn't seem to know what an editor is. Seriously, that man never met a piece of dialogue he didn't like. He's the George Lucas of video games, and I'm talking about Lucas' recent awful work, not the good stuff he made his name with.

Microsoft surrendered? What... they were a sponsor of the technology, they didn't have much say in the final decision made by Toshiba.

TC sounds an awefully lot like Mastercharged or KeyWii.

Either way, blu-ray is rediculous and not needing for gaming anytime soon. You can spend several hundred hours playing Oblivion on DVD-9 and the devs are talking about how Fallout 3 is going to have alot more packed on screen, leaving Oblivion in the dust visually. All on DVD-9.

Both consoles are taking a backseat to the Wii, and perhaps will for the remainder of this gen. Tells you right there how mighty blu-ray is. Also Crysis after extraction can still fit onto a DVD. This game MELTS the PS3! Do you think the PS3 could ever attempt this game with no loss in quality and level design? If you do, I declare you insane and need to submit yourself in the looney bin.

Blu-ray for the most part has been been overhyped by Sony. Yes, it will probably replace dvds later down the road (not any time soon though) but really I'm glad it's not mainstream yet because it appears to the the downfall of everything.. a downward spiral if you will. Only thing worse is the mental patients who constantly worships the format!

JudgementEden

Your post is full of false assumptions, opinions and personal attacks.

Thanks for proving absolutely nothing.

I agree, oldskooler79 is an idiot. Obviously he has never heard of compression; Thats what Blu-Ray is supposed to remedy. Thats what its used for: To put data on the disk without being compressed, thus, producing better quality. Not because the drive is "slow" (Which is a false assumption).

And yes, the PS3 could pull off Crysis. Oh I guess im crazy!

A quad-core PC can run Crysis, I think a 7 core could do it better. You proceed to insult others who like Blu-Ray as if its mentally retarded to do so (Which you explicitly state). Blu-Ray is JUST a storage medium, you opposed fanboys of God knows what need to quit blowing it out of proportion. Blu is not going to "corrupt" the gaming market like you people seem to imply.

It really can't be denied, if it's a longer game, it's a better game. I like the idea of 60 hours of MGS. Blu ray is suppose to make games longer. I'm not seeing the results. Just massive ammounts of short games. Pitiful.

That's not the only factor coming to play when you are making a game for a system. All the other hardware limitations the PS3 has it cannot run crysis in it's current form.

You're missing my point. You said "SONY promised", I stopped reading there. What Sony did was explain what the PS3 was CAPABLE of. Like I said, it is up to the DEVELOPERS to do what Sony envisioned.

Well it's THE next data and movie format so people need to just get over their stupid fanboyism and accept it. Probably all the next consoles will use it (with more layers and faster read speeds of course).Lazy_Boy88

Unless those prices drop fast, its not going to beat DLC to the punch, and personaly CD's for data storage is fine, but HDD and RAM drives are the way of gamings furture..

52x drives are a thing of the past, the rate at which RAM can read and write is really where Console should be going.

True, but I dont think the quality would decrease much, if at all, as long as the developers actually tried to make it as good as they could.

Lost Odyssey requires 4 discs. A game released 2 years after the 360 was on the market.

Imagine in a couple of years. Do the math.

Oh you poor little thing......You never, ever should have brought up L.O.

For starters, many have 75 + hours into this game as I myself have logged almost 90 hours of game-play so basically you can say each disk reps 20 hours of game-play on these teeny tinny DVD9 disks and what have you got to show for the games made on that wonder disk B.R. ....... 6 to 7 hour long games and mostly average one player games at that... pitiful !!

PS: Mistwalker made the best Jrpg this gen for certain and I tell you, it's getting my vote these days as up there with best ever and maybe just Best and there you are with a PS3 with the Boo Ray twiddling you're thumbs hoping, praying a FF game hits the PS3 before 2010. You made the wrong choice man - get over it or go get a and 360 be happy it doesn't have B.R. ;)

Kojima san already stated that not even Blu-Ray is enough to store his amazing vision and creativity.Microsoft can't afford to release another console so soon.

High definition requires absurd ammounts of storage and Blu-Ray will prove it sooner than you think.

PS_Family

More importantly, high-definition gaming requires high amounts of memory--something both consoles sorely lack. Sorry, but like it or not, if you want high-definition textures and the like and large open scenes, you're gonna need someplace to put them. Otherwise, you're gonna be trying to fit a baker's dozen into an egg carton--there's just no neat way to do it.

JudgementEden: Memory is what's keeping Crysis off the consoles--not processing power. The large, physically-active scenes in Crysis demand a lot of memory. Even on its lowest settings, it calls for more system memory by itself (not including the memory used by the OS) than the PS3 and 360 each have total (both system and graphics memory).

why do i need to listen to lemmings claiming 360 doesn't need bluray to sell, when i can listen to michael pachter :

"In the US, I think it will be close all year, with 360 outselling PS3 most months due to its lower price points (at least as long as it remains lower priced)," Pachter told videogaming247. "Sony gains a huge competitive advantage when HD monitor sales pick up at holiday, as I expect retailers to push PS3 as a Blu-ray player to anyone buying an HD monitor. By year-end, I think PS3 will outsell the 360 in the US by a little."
