When Microsoft announced Killer Instinct for the Xbox One, Rare fans were thrilled until they found out it was outsourced to Double Helix Games. Microsoft was unaware Rare was the creator of the series and would have had them make it if they had known.Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, spoke about the issue during an interview about Killer Instinct and the return of classic franchises to the Xbox One. We knew fans were dying for an old IP and we noticed that we had something called Killer Instinct available, said Mattrick, We outsourced the title to Double Helix Games in the hopes that fans would appreciate the revival of this classic franchise. Only afterwards did we learn that Rare was actually the original creator of the series and, believe it or not, Microsoft owns Rare. If we had known Rare was the original developers behind the series, we would have had them make it. We just completely forgot there was more to Rare than Kinect Sports. In fact, we were kind of surprised to learn that they had actually made titles outside of sports games, continued Mattrick, We were under the impression they just made a lot of sports games for Nintendo like Ken Griffey, Jr.s Winning Run which is why we put them to work on Kinect Sports in the first place. Now we know that Rare has made other types of games like first-person shooters. Man, Im surprised we havent made them do one of those since we know Xbox fans love that genre. Double Helix Games producer Michael Willette defends his company and promises that they will put in as much love to Killer Instinct as Rare would have. While we feel bad for Rare since they arent getting to work on their series, were glad to have a great title under our belts to really establish ourselves as a real development team, said Willette, In fact, I hope this title pushes us far beyond what Rare has been doing for the past few years. Wouldnt it be great if we could work on all those classic Rare titles from now on? With our tremendous work on games like Silent Hill Homecoming, Front Mission Evolved and now Killer Instinct, maybe it can happen. Unfortunately for Rare, they wont be able to work on one of their classic franchises until 2015 as it seems their development schedule has been filled up with titles like Kinect Sports Rivals and Kinect Sports Rivals: Season Two. http://www.p4rgaming.com/microsoft-we-would-have-had-rare-work-on-killer-instinct-if-we-knew-they-made-it/
