For the record, I always said MS would launch a new system before the end of 2012 and I think at the beginning of the 360 launch,MS did too but now, not so much as there seems to be plenty of $$$$ to be had by going that: future proof, ten year life cycle like Sony. :P

I really, really wanted, no need a new, more powerful and exciting new system by 2012 - A PC gaming rig may be the only way. :)

The Story:

-------

It's clear that the current console cycle is shaping up to be longer than any previous, as major platform holders Sony and Microsoft get ready to roll out motion control tech they hope will extend the lifecycle.

Sony's known for having always expressed its commitment to the long-haul, shooting for the same ten-year lifecycle for the PlayStation 3 that it saw with the PlayStation 2. Now Microsoft is now more boldly asserting its commitment to the Xbox 360 for as far as the eye can presently see, in new comments from CES reported by the UK Guardian.

"I think it's important to say that the Xbox 360 is the console of the long future for us," senior director of Xbox product management David Hufford said. "There is no need to launch a new console, because we're able to give this console new life either with software upgrades or hardware upgrades like Project Natal."

"The Xbox 360 was designed for a long life, and I don't even know if we're at the midpoint yet," Hufford added -- noting that the company had no plans to enhance or update the Xbox 360 with the kind of hardware streamline that benefited Sony with its less-expensive PS3 Slim.

"We love our prices right now," said Hufford. "I don't want to say that technology stops, but...we think we're in a good place now heading into the Natal era."

Good! I don't want next gen till at least 2012. Let developers get comfortable with the platform and release more and better games. Firmware updates allow us constant improvements anyway.

i think they might see what natal does, but these comments are to be expected. they won't say "our next console will be releasing next year", as people will hold off getting one.

i personally think nintendo will release theirs mid- late 2011 judging from their history, 360 late 2011, and ps3 i'm unsure about.

There's really no reason to release a new console by MS or Sony. PS3 and 360 still have a good 3-4 years before their games start looking dated.

They are launching a new system. It's going to be a rebranded 360 with built in Natal.

by 2011 when ati and nvidia both have their flagship direct x 11 cards out, i think 360/ps3 will start looking dated. it's 2 years off, people will be more then ready for a new console then.

6 years for the 360 is a really long life span.

I am not saying I want another system soon, I am saying that 20gb doesn't last long. If upgrading to a new HDD was cheaper, I wouldn't complain as much.

yeah, know lets see. Ps3 has Kz2. 4 years dev time estimated 60 million dollar budget. GT5 infinite budget and dev time. compared to gears 1 + 2, each with 6 people working on it and a 10 - 12 million dollar budegt. then there the question how many engines have been built from ground up for the 30? 3 Rare made one, Ensemble studios made one and now theres the X engine. Gears 1 ran using mostly one core of the xenon,

"According to Epic's Cliff Bleszinski, the game as it is running right now is only using one of the Xbox 360's three cores, and has been up and running on the final development kits for only about two weeks."

heresthe link http://www.xbox365.com/news.cgi?id=GGuHiuuLPL09141133

anyway the X engine is more than just a tool set. Its a new way to program. Heres a thread I wrote about it cause I don't feel like writing it all out

http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27141754

but to me it doesn't really matter both systems are putting out great games nonetheless. and thats all that matters :)

Yeah 360 looks really dated lol.

How the hell did Ps2 owners put up with such outdated hardware last gen when the 360 has better looking multiplatform titles and yet it `s looking dated.

Sony fanboys really are grasping for straws here.

I agree with the first post. It's not just that the market is not quite ready for new consoles, but I also think both companies really need to give us something dynamite next time round. There is a lot at stake. So a decade seems about right. That's a decade = 10 years ;)

I don't care what MS says...as always, they will SAY whatever they want to keep making money off the 360 while DOING whatever they want behind the scenes. Even if the two are totally different issues.

Having said that, nobody wants new consoles to come out in 2010 (typical 5 year cycle). MS may be many things, but they aren't stupid enough to come out with a new console when the 360 is making a ton of money, and their competition (Sony) won't come out with their new console any time soon. And considering we are only NOW at a price point when past gens have BEGAN, we won't be seeing next gen for a while.

Agreed, I have about 1 gig left on my 360's 20 gig harddrive. At this point, I will have to delete my game add-ons and bought arcade games to gain more space. MS harddrive prices are ridiculous:evil:. I am sure that MS will release 250gig harddrive as stand alone, so they will have to drop prices eventually. I was hoping for price drop anoncement at CES but no such luck.

Anyway, there is no need for MS to release new console anytime soon. Nintendo showed that with right marketing/strategy, the technology is not importatnt to be a commercial sucess. Sony won't release a new console soon either. Nintendo might release beefed up Wii, but I doubt that it will be more powerfull than PS3/360. If Natal is sucessfull, it will be relanch of 360 anyway. To be honest, the more I hear about Natal the more I dislike it, but we will see. MS seems to be going after casual market with Natal, so I am sceptical that they will have games that appeal to me.

so did the ps3, plus ps3 has installs. so 5 games and bye bye 20 gig hd. why you think they made 120/250 hd in all ps3s now. because people need alot more space on ps3s.

Pretty upsetting to me. More powerful hardware brings a lot more to the table than prettier graphics. I haven't seen anything from Natal or Gem games-wise that has me interested in them yet...

This is pretty much why I just got a huge PC upgrade. The technological gap between them is already huge, I can't begin to imagine how 2012 PCs are gonna compare to the 360 and PS3.

Since this is the first generation a console war has been entirely changed DURING it's lifespan with the inclusion of motion controls as well as the introduction of new technology such as streaming services being more and more capable of grander things and on top of that what we now know as a step away from the Virtual Boy and closer to true 3D Gaming, its no wondering the future is uncertain for consoles. To do a PC: meaning upgrade nothing but the hardware and release it as a new console would be down right foolish as the market is in the state it is (above mentioned). Therefor I think Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony need to figure out what is the future and what areas to focus on.They could do a Wii HD type of thing and rellease a stepping stone console but the "true" next gen is yet unknown and probably will be for some time. I mean gaming really is getting more and more complicated as they want it to be more mainstreamed to the public and thread on new grounds. I really hope virtual reality will become a possibility or holographic gaming.

I don't think the 360 was built future proof. That's just me.

Nothing is future proof not even the supercomputer known as the PS3

How do you know ps3 will last another 2-3 years counting Sony is losing money with each console sold :|

Well this thread is about the 360. However, If we are comparing the PS3 is more future proof than the 360. Built in wifi, a winning format, 3D via an update. Heck people are still buying PS2!
