This is how marketing works nowadays. On our front, we're not really big fans. Still, to regular consumers, adverts are a source of information. Focussed adverts, are far more interesting to them, than general adverts.

[QUOTE="-Damien-"]

http://adage.com/article/special-report-ana-annual-meeting-2013/xbox-reshape-marketing/244605/

Yusuf Mehdi, corporate VP-marketing and strategy for Microsoft, outlined how he expects the new system, which succeeds the eight-year-old Xbox 360 in a neck-and-neck race with Sony's Playstation 4 launch, could affect marketing. Those possibilities include ramping up consumer expectations for production values in advertising thanks to advances in Xbox imaging technology, furthering the "gamification" movement in advertising, and consolidating more attention now diffused among multiple devices for gaming, TV and web browsing onto the big screen

"We are trying to bridge some of the world between online and offline," he said. "That's a little bit of a holy grail in terms of how you understand the consumer in that 360 degrees of their life. We have a pretty unique position at Microsoft because of what we do with digital, as well as more and more with television because of Xbox. It's early days, but we're starting to put that together in more of a unifying way, and hopefully at some point we can start to offer that to advertisers broadly."

Xbox One can essentially work like TV that watches you, bringing marketers a huge new trove of data about what's going on in living rooms, including, as one marketer put it after the speech, unprecedented information about how people engage with TV advertising.

"It could have a big impact on pricing," he said, given Xbox One's capacity for seeing whether people are paying attention or how their bodies respond to the ads, said the marketer, who wasn't authorized by his company to speak for attribution.

You can see this is the way the world is going but I am not sure I am ready for it yet. Really does leave a bad taste in the mouth but at least kinnect isn't required to be always on anymore.

The NSA stuff was bad enough, now this?

So, let me get this straight..  You pay for Xbox Live for years, and the 360 dash is already advertising ridden.  Then, the XBox One has a camera crammed in every box so you pay for having the damn thing whether you are into motion control gaming or not.  Then, you still pay your Live fees, so they swim in pools filled with dollars like Scrooge McDuck from that, but then they take whatever info they can off their customers and sell that to advertising agencies as well.

Watch.  ALL of their advertising will feature fantasy football and games for 7 year olds because they want you to only picture using the XBox with the camera sensor.  They couldn't make its use mandatory due to the utter shitstorm over it a few months ago, but it doesn't mean they won't advertise and target the product towards a less conscious crowd, anyway.  Before long, you'll probably not even hear them refer to it as a console at all.

This is the end-game.  This is why MS sunk billions into creating an XBox.  It had nothing to do with games, even from the start it seems.  They just wanted a box in people's living rooms.  Where they couldn't succeed against Sony, the Wii has showed them the way.  Abandon ship, if you know what's best for you.

The world is shaped by our actions.  We can just stuff the XBox One, then send a loud and clear message that gamers are not a bunch of idiots that can be strip mined and phracked for every dollar.

Sony drone or not, you do have to admit that the Microsoft that you hear from Major Nelson is a whole lot different than the Microsoft that speaks when it thinks no one is looking.

Look on the bright side!

Microsoft can use the data it collects to improve it's PR messaging. They clearly need all the help they can get at the moment. :P

Shew, you were absolutely against online fee's. Holding online multiplayer hostage outraged you. I believe you worded it 'no way in hell would I support the PS4 if they charge for online multiplayer' or something along those lines.

Then it actually happened. $50 a year to playing multiplayer on PS4. And what happened to your principles? Out the window

You're right. The world is shaped by our actions and your just another sucker whos bending over for Sony and paying to unlock online multiplayer. So get off that high horse because if Sony announced the same thing, you'd be fine with it.

Paying for online play is a rip off no matter who does it,at least with PSN+ you get something back games, with live all you get is  apps and things already free else where.

Also you are on the same side now paying for online is bad because is on PS4,those long years you payed for that crap and defended how the money went back into making a better experience, maybe now you can say the same about PSN.

Nope. All you cows who went on and on and on about TEH PRINCIPLE of having to pay for online are literally just bending over now. Sony are holding online multiplayer hostage just like Microsoft, and all you cows are suddenly fine with it

The difference between me and people like you is that Ive never complained about paying for online. I've even defended it, AGAINST you lmao

And now you're in the exact same boat as me. Hypocrit.

Think this is starting to sound real shady. I mean this tech does seem a lot more useful for marketing research than gaming (wtf should the heart rate be used for in games?). Meh I think PC-gaming is the way forward for me, as SOny wil likely follow in some ways.

Look on the bright side!

 true! If they had this tech for X360, maybe they could have avoided the X1 reveal disaster!

Sometimes I miss the good old days, when all consoles did was play my games and weren't constantly trying to get into my wallet. They were simpler times, the grass was greener, the air was fresher, mullets were a legitimate hair style, and nobody wore their beard ironically.getyeryayasout

mullets are still a legitimate hair style, how dare you.

[QUOTE="FoxbatAlpha"]If you understand this it means that they will gather data based on what you select on screen. Not watch what you do through the Kinect .EG101

It will probably collect data on what commercials you watch and which you skip but it would be illegal for them to actually record video which is what the fanboys are trying to say is going to happen.

Thats because this this SW. M$ already issued a statement specifically stating that info from Kinect will not be uploaded nor used for marketing purposes.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-10-07-microsoft-moves-to-calm-fear-over-xbox-one-advertising

"...."Microsoft has very, very good policies around privacy," he said. "We're a leader in the world of privacy, I think you'll find. We take it very seriously. We aren't using Kinect to snoop on anybody at all. We listen for the word 'Xbox on' and then switch on the machine, but we don't transmit personal data in any way, shape or form that could be personally identifiable to you, unless you explicitly opt into that."

OH MY GOD, he contradicts himself within one quote, unbelievable

according to lems on these forums, they wouldn-t do that ever. We all know microsoft and their PR dept would only be honest 100%
