Sad News Here
I wasn't a big fan of Midway... but its still sad this stuff is happening.

*waits for sheep saying: It wnt bankruptcy cause MK vs DC was in HD (in other words not on wii)* anyways, midways got lucky all these past years for not hitting the bottom back thenGiancar
What? Are you kidding me? Midway isn't going under because MK vs. DC wasn't on the Wii. Just look at the past lineup from Midway and you can plainly see why they are going under. Its called not making good quality games and investing in titles that don't deliver. Mortal Kombat hasn't been a money maker for a long time now and honestly I can't really remember the last time I played an MK game let alone the last time I played one and said "I'm glad I got this."
Maybe supporting the Wii would have put this off for abit, but it still would have happened. Midway has become a subpar developer and in today's day and age, with development costs so high with the PS3 and 360 and increased development cycles you can't just keep putting out one bad game after another without it eventually catching up to you. Instead of thinking MK vs. DC, how about a great Rush game with an awesome damage engine in (similar to Burnout), Rush 2049 was great, why not try to get back to that?

ehh, I agree with you, and the second part of my post sumarize the feelings about that :? They got really lucky :?:? I didin't state the contraryDC, how about a great Rush game with an awesome damage engine in (similar to Burnout), Rush 2049 was great, why not try to get back to that? kejigotoMaybe the last one did not do so well....I think they did another MK game because it is the only title midway has that still sells.
**Waits for HD gaming is killing the industry comment from sheep** Sad news :(thegoldenpoo
what about ask the developer what they think is the reason ? oh wait developer saying the costs are too high NOT THE SHEEP ! sheep only post what developer say ;)
And sigh @ all the sheep comments. Just goes to show you guys hating on them don't really know what is going on. Let's put it this way, if the holy grail, the HD consoles, is so great, then why is Midway failing even after shipping 2 million copies of MK vs DC? That's 2 million copies. Why are they filing for bankruptcy when sales seem to be strong? Zhengiwhat was the best franchise midway got? what other "great" franchises did midway develop?

Did you even look at my questions? They shipped 2 million copies of MK vs. DC. If the HD consoles were so great, how did Midway fall into bankruptcy even after shipping that many units? But I'll answer yours.
Their best franchise was MK. They developed it and they shipped 2 million copies of it. They don't have other great franchises, which is a shame, but a business does not go out of business without owing a lot of money. Why do they owe so much debt?

What were their operational costs? I don't know. A company to do great has to do more than one product (or game in this case). What were the costs of its games? Were those cost - efficient ? I don't think so. Midway rumors of bankruptcy are not new. I've been hearing those more than 5 years, and finally those are true. And 5 year before they weren't only "HD", they were always mediocre and were at the bottom. They got lucky before, but the luck didn't save them in this economic situation. Look now the FR case: Cytrek, the most graphically advanced dev out there (or HD as some people like to say), bought the dev, they made a bet and I'm pretty sure they will do great, because they have talent..[QUOTE="Zhengi"][QUOTE="Giancar"] what was the best franchise midway got? what other "great" franchises did midway develop?Giancar

The costs associated with making games for the HD consoles are too much and the return on investment is not high enough. This is why I've said they need to diversify their projects to include other platforms like the DS, PSP, and PC, not just the Wii. What do all these devs who are failing have in common? Free Radical Design, EA studios, THQ studios, Midway, and others developed games primarily for the HD consoles. It's no coincidence that all of them are laying off people or closing studios. It's these costs that are killing these devs and they are not sustainable.

How much did the last MK game sold on the wii? Not much I assure you.Midway simply put was one of the worst developers out there, and they finally hit the bottom.
A lot of other developers are still working with "HD" ( which is more graphics, physiscs, sound, AI and some other things)
DR2 just got recently announced, and that game will do awesome. I'll guarantee that

The thing with developing for the Wii is that the costs are lower. Even if a game bombs, it will not put a company out of business. Look at MK vs DC. That's Midway's biggest game of the holiday season and it was a relative success with 2 million shipped, and they're still filing for bankruptcy. So what is supposed to be a success causes a company to go into bankruptcy? How does that work?
As for Capcom, they're different from Midway because they have done what I said. They have diversifed their game projects. They're not only concentrating on the HD consoles, but they are also putting quality games like Monster Hunter on the Wii and PSP, Mega Man and Phoenix Wright on the DS, Spyborgs on the Wii, and a host of other games for other systems. See the difference?

How much did they pay for the engine? what other cost non relately with MK have? or at least that you can "divide" by multiple projects? Heck they did a MK for the wii, and was bad, and sold bad. Because Midway is a bad developer, those kind of developers deserve that fate. How they can sustain with one main mediocre game every 2 years? Yeah, and Capcom is putting DR:CTYD game. One of the worst ports ever made. Why? Because the expect people to buy those. At least I respect capcom because they are not only doing quick cash ports. They are doing "HD" games like SF4, Re5, BC, DR2 because they care about their consumers too*Sigh*... Why do Ghost of onyx and Zhengi just end up shouting "We hate HD" in every single thread, its just you two that seem to hate HD. Over and over again ive seen you two posting the same things "HD is killing gaming, they should all switch to the Wii/DS"
Does the improvement in image quality offend you? Do high production values make you vomit? Does looking at HDR, listening to high quality sound make you feel ill?
Has the last year utter drought in Wii games shown you nothing? have we not seem how limiting the little white box really is in the past six months? Developer after developer has gone on the record to say they find it too restrictive, now instead of just pointing the finger at HD every time a dev goes out of buisness you should listen what the sucessful developers of good games are actually saying, it it aint pretty towards the wii.
Sure HD is expensive, but play your cars right and you can turn a big proffit, surely even you must admit that little new is possible on the wii that wasn't done last gen. without the HD you hate so much could we have games of the scope of Fallout 3? or STALKER?
How are they hating on HD? They're just pointing out extremely high development cost, you'd have to have an almost flawless marketing campaign to get to the top.*Sigh*... We'll see if they come back from Chapter 11 stronger than ever. Midway just has too many problems that they need to fix and hopefully Chapter 11 will help them accomplish this. I just hope they don't fall into Chapter 7 or that is it for this publisher.Zhengi
It seems for many people, bankruptcy means that a business will go out of business. That is not true. It means that the company will be protected from creditors and will not be forced to incur any additional debt, but under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, it must reorganize. Chapter 7 is what Midway does not want to face as it must go out of business and sell its assets through liquidation. This is the type of bankruptcy that affected Circuit City.
One last thing: please quit with the fanboy nonsense please? Fanboy bashing is not appropriate on this thread and it will get it locked by the moderators.

No, they died by making poor games with a credit storm raging, those studios have never been in the best of health even before the recession. The wii is just not some magic bullet that makes games sell better or make more profit, do you think that free radical would still be in business if Haze had been a wii exclusive? That's just deluded fanboyism, you can't just make sweeping statements about companies that you no nothing about.
