It won't become a shooter per se, but put more emphasis on those elements that were previously just filler parts of the game. So instead of a few optional gunfights (I think you can complete the game without hurting a single enemy) , there will be set pieces with high production values now where shooting is mandatory.Â
Can you name a series they haven't streamlined to the masses? Mass Effect has less RPG elements, Dead Space 3 puts less focus on the survival horror aspect; basically all blockbuster games go through this process nowadays. They are stripped of their unique parts and become generic action games.

But that doesn't help them, because that game still doesn't sell any better than a 'pure' Mirror's Edge sequel. With new consoles coming out, EA could produce a new IP with those qualities that appeals to the mainstream more than Mirror's Edge does, and they would be giving it a much better chance of selling by not associating it with a niche, tepidly-reviewed platformer. At the very least, they would not call it Mirror's Edge 2, even if it started as that.
Mass Effect and Dead Space are poor comparisons because the shooting was a core part of both those franchises from the beginning. No one liked the shooting in Mirror's Edge, and the ability to use guns could have been removed from the game without fundamentally changing it.
