Legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that he worries about the continued reliance by developers to create yet another first person or third person shooter. Miyamoto says he wonders about how younger gamers sit down and interact with these types of games, and thinks parents need a better idea of what happens in these games.

"Sometimes I get worried about the continued reliance on making games that are so centered around guns, and that there are so many of these games,? he says. ?I have a hard time imagining ? particularly for young generations of gamers ? how they sit down and play and interact with that."

"Previous forms of media, like books, made it easy for parents to know and understand what they?re buying for their children. With the transition into digital mediums it becomes more difficult for parents to have a full grasp of what?s going on. From a game developer?s standpoint it?s important to take that into account."

What's so hard for parents to take into account? There's a description on the back on the case, usually with pictures (guns), an ESRB rating, and of course when you actually watch your kid you should notice the guns on-screen.

Parents are stupid and spoil their kids with whatever they want. On xbox live you used to be able to talk with adults and make friends, now you only find kids and people without mics.

And why is that? This gen has so many shooters, and many are very popular. I agree with him, there should be more diverse games in the market that perform well rather than blockbuster shooters.

That's fine. Worrying about the "young generation" and how they take in shooters is a different thing entirely.

Yeah, reminds me when the market was flooded with platformers, yet for some reason Miyamoto never really complained about that...

I wonder why

I guess this is what happens when your relevance is not the same as it was back in the day Miyamoto.

Platformers are generally for all ages. Shooters are usually mature gore fests. Thats what he's getting at.

He says nothing about gaming having an ill fate, simply that a generally mature genre is being taken in by younger ages more than any other genre right now, and its concerning.

I'm not comfortable with the fact that I'm completely jaded to the extreme violence presented in mediums, and actual life. Shooters, and violent games in general played an incredible role in that. So, I guess I can agree with Miyamoto on this one.

All I remember is that I was playing super mario 64 one day, and the next day was conkers bad fur day. Whenever I have looked back, it's been short-lived, and something is wrong with that picture imo.

No its not. There's only like 3 big FPS series right now. CoD, Halo and Battlefield. All the other big games are different genres.

Those bashing him are idiots, he makes a decent point. wether you like it or not because your macho teenies. Shooters have become mindless man-flicks with little substance that saturate as much as pointless sport rehashes.

I'd be more worried about dumb parents allowing their under age children to play mature games, regardless of genre. I know my kids aren't allowed to play or even watch a lot of the games I play. If it's designed for over 17 or 18 or what ever your countries regulations are then children under that age should not be playing or viewing it (yes if your under the age that your society deems you to be an adult, then your a child). That goes for all other forms of media as well.

Now switch off your computer and go to bed! :P

Thing with shooters is, nobody plays the bad ones, it's only the 3 or so on that that everyone plays. Sounds like Miyamoto is just being a hater.

He's right, even looking at last gen were we had games like Resi and Splinter Cell, first 3(+) installments were about much more than just shooting, look at both series now, shooters and not a whole lot more.

LMAO, yeah and they're like the top selling series right now.

CoD is the best selling series by far. What's the second best selling by game? I'm pretty sure it's GTA which is a 3rd person shooter. Other major games I know of are uncharted, gears.

Gez sony has like 3 exclusive fps games.

Then there's deus ex, infamous, mass effect, portal, half life, probably about a dozen more I'm forgetting.

Look at the major games coming out this year; Black ops 2, tomb raider, far cry 3, boarderlands 2, RE6, Halo 4, bioshock vita, hitman.

Face it, the market is saturated with shooters. Every game on my radar is a shooter, as I'm sure is the case with alot of gamers.

Miyamoto is not saying gaming is doomed due to there being more shooters or that shooters are bad. He's just worrying about how kids are taking in all the violence and guns that are becoming more and more mainstream in the gaming industry.

A valid concern, although one he might have wanted to started considering earlier.

You guys realize that a shooter = a game that revolves around guns.

Watchdogs, GTA and RDR are "shooters" aswell, because the main gameplay mechanic is based on shooting stuff and taking cover. The Mass Effect games are shooters aswell, so the term "shooters" is not limited to games that fall under the FPS/TPS genre.

A game can still be a "shooter" even though it's a survival horror / open world / RPG game.

Ratchet is also a shooter/platformer hybrid with TPS gameplay taking the front seat, the platforming element is sort of just there.

With this in mind I don't think there is anyone who can argue against him.

Thats what he's getting at.

so? Because this one gen is having a influx of first person shooters gaming is now doomed?

Wow, clearly this whole thing is over your head. You must be one of the kids that Miyamoto is talking about.

It is definitely worrying that so many kids today are drunk on CoD and it's clones. Not only worrying for the kids but the games industry itself.. To have one genre dominate over all else specially one that promotes violence isn't a good thing.

He's right. Shooters will make kids become shooters in real life

Miyamoto is not saying gaming is doomed due to there being more shooters or that shooters are bad. He's just worrying about how kids are taking in all the violence and guns that are becoming more and more mainstream in the gaming industry.

A valid concern, although one he might have wanted to started considering earlier.

Not sure if we're one of the few who get that, or people don't care...probably both.
