I don't know whether to get Modern Warfare 2 for the 360 or PS3.

Anyone have any information on the differences between the PS3 and 360 versions of Modern Warfare 2?

The only thing I can think of is that it was announced that map packs will be released slightly earlier on the 360.

Perhaps COD4 and 5 can provide some hints as to what the differences will be. What were the differences between the systems for COD 4 and 5?

Thanks for any info.

Jason_A

I didn't say that console gamers' skills are inferior to PC gamers', I said that skills in console games will not translate to PC games due to dramatically different mechanics. As I say, the training wheels come off when you play these games. In RO, there are no complex mechanics, there are only contextual and relative mechanics, such as cover, lean and peak, etc, and aside from that it's pretty much as simple as point and shoot. What you have to deal with is the physics engine. The point is you don't have training wheels like crosshairs, automatic rifle bolting, auto-reload, aim-assist, et cetera. In console games you can oftentimes just point generally in the direction of a target running around erratically on the same level as you and have sticky aim grab the target while you effectively hold down the trigger and watch their life drop to zero, whereas in a game like RO I actually have to fire a projectile at a target. As far as COD4, it just looks like butt. Get over it. I didn't pick those pics to make them look crappy, I picked them because they are representative of how much like butt COD4 looks.

[QUOTE="Brownesque"][QUOTE="doubleblahzors4"]They havent evolved this franchise enough for me to buy it, when the hell are you going to be able to swim in call of duty?doubleblahzors4
Swim? Why would you want to swim? You do know that a lot of guns jam up with you put them in the water, right? Swimming isn't exactly fun for any first person game.....it's even rare that you'll find a game with a good swimming control scheme, it's almost never a worthwhile mechanic. I think COD has its niche, but it takes game balance and takes a leak on it with COD4 onward. They've just decided they don't want game balance, and to me, that's the key. The game mechanics are there and they're decent enough, it just needs an effort to make it not quite so brainless and not so horribly imbalanced.

nah a ak-47 can function underwater.

The AK-47 is exceptional in that regard. The AK-47 can take some serious, serious abuse. You probably couldn't put a Luger underwater or fire it, a M1911, an M16, a G36....those last three are from COD4 and the first two are from COD2 as well.

I dont understand why dev's even add aim assist to console shooters it makes console gamers look bad and it's actually unnessasary, only a crappy player would complain it's hard to aim with a controller. dev's piss me the hell off

I really do prefer it when shooters don't have aim assist. Some games are better off with it, I loved the auto-aiming in Siren: Blood Curse and I think it's great fun in Warhawk, but it is pretty much ridiculous in a game centered around aiming to have automatic aiming. But then again consoles are so easy and friendly and fun, this is what I see console gamers argue over and over in this forum, and they want to play these games on the couch with friends while they're drinking a beer, so what can you say, seriously.

1. Fine, you have a Point about Red Orchestra (I just Mis-Heard you).

2. I'm sorry, but I can't take you Seriously if you're saying that CoD 4 looks like Butt. You can dislike the Game, but NO WAY in Hades does CoD 4 look like Crap.

3. Yes, you DID pick a Bad Screen-Shot to make it look Bad. There are WAY better Screen-Shots that that one.

Yeah, it doesn't look like crap, I was just using hyperbole because I'm a jerk. Basically what I'm trying to say is it doesn't take a whole hell of a lot on the consoles or on any reasonable (sometimes even crappy) PC to surpass COD4's visuals. And part of the reason I hate COD4 on my PS3 is because it doesn't look good. It's not that it's so horribly ugly overall, it's just that I like good image quality, large draw distances, and little pop-up to make sniping, shooting over long distances, target acquisition easier. I prefer games like Project Reality or Red Orchestra where you can actually see a target even if he's prone over hundreds of meters. COD4 is more like below my threshold for acceptable than looking like butt. 3. by all means, show me some.

I know on COD:WAW XBOX 360 has about twice as many active users. The better players for FPS always tend to drift towards XBOX 360.

sexy_robot_man

not true from my experience, i had cod 4 on ps3 and i was good but not great, then i played it on 360 and i absolutely dominated, it could be that all the little 12 year olds have an xbox and think cursing on the mic is cool. but just get it on the system where you know more people ,and whatever controller you prefer. Ps3 is free online, so ill be getting it on ps3.

You don't have to play a 40 man match (40 man is 20 vs 20 btw). You can play any level you want on PC, whereas on consoles you're stuck with whatever they give you. The other thing is the stock maps are more or less built for the sizes of the console matches, meaning you may be playing on maps that are WAYYYY to small for those player counts (40 man and above). There's always custom maps. Trust me, if you play a game like Project Reality, you're basically swimming in the maps on a 50 man server, that's because the maps are multiple square kilometers in size, whereas a COD4 map on consoles is like.....little bitty.

You've got to take Trueskill into account. Trueskill basically means on 360 you're always matched against players with roughly your same skill level. On PS3 you could be playing against players WAY above your skill level or WAY below it, same with PC. That's why anecdotal evidence is pretty much worthless when talking about skill levels. You can't compare 360 with PC/PS3.

the competitve community for 360 version is very good compared to the ps3 one. gamebattles for cod4 360 had 30,000 teams signed up summer 2008. meanwhile cod4 for ps3 couldnt break 5 thousand teams. i like the competitive community for 360 gaems more than ps3. thats just my taste n also the 360 version got those extra maps

anshuk20002

It doesn't really matter though because 5k people aren't needed for a match.

I'll be getting it for my 360 over my PS3, even without the extra map packs. This is mainly because of the party function, no irritating background noise from bluetooth headsets, not so many connection errors/host has ended it, not so many camping noobs on the 360.... also, I prefer the 360 controller for FPS's (but that's just my own personal preference).

Here's what the console versions of MW2 look like:

I got that on Beyond3D forums. They said it was the same image quality (600p with 2xAA) as the first game.

I can literally get you better looking screen shots than this with Call of Duty 2 running on a Pentium D with a 7800 GS. And I could get you screens on my current PC for Call of Duty 2 that would make your eyes bleed.

Brownesque

lol go do that, and if your not using a conversion mod i bet it wont look better.

Im sorry but this is absolute BS.

Character models in COD 2 look terrible compared to MW (and I assume MW2 will look the same), and the lighting in MW/MW2 is much much better than the lighting you see in COD 2.

No higher resolution, and any amount of AA samples can fix that.

Also, COD2 for the PC isn't exactly that well optimized compared to MW, or even the 360 version of COD 2.
On a Pentium D  with a 7800 you might be able to equal what it looks like on the 360.

K. Ready?

COD2 on 360:

Mmmmm, jaggie-licious.

COD2 on PC:

As far as the character models looking bad:

um you said cod2 pc on a pentium 4 and 7800 would look better then cod 4 on 360....so you do a comparison of cod2 on pc on who knows what configuration compared to cod2 360? ookay....

Brownesque

that's a bad recommendation

Really? because the console versions of COD4 ran at 600p at 60 FPS with 2xAA. You'd be hard pressed not to obliterate that standard on PC. Consoles also had a limitation of 16 players on consoles, whereas you could play with 50 players online on PC. PC online gaming is also free and all of the map packs were released for free. That and you had free mods, free user-made maps, and servers that dished out custom map rotations and custom content for you to game on. Not to mention less lag than either console version and not having to put up with disconnects due to the host leaving. Frankly, buying COD4 on PS3 pissed me off. The version is a wreck. MW2 will have ALL of the problems I just listed on consoles and ALL of the advantages I just listed on PC. It's still 600p with 2xAA. In other words it will look like ass and play like ass. Oh, and I hope you like crappy controls, because you'll have copious amounts of aim assist on your second-rate citizen console versions.

It's a bad recommendation because the guy asks whether he should get it on PS3 or 360. He didn't mention PC, so why bring it up? He may not have a decent gaming pc or perhaps he just prefers playing FPS on consoles. Whatever the reason, he seems to be hesitating only between PS3 and 360, so yeah, to recommend thePC version in that case is as badas recommendations get. You just seem to see this thread as a way to restate how superior the PC is to consoles. We all know it is. There's no need to keep stating it over and over again.

I prefer PSN over XBL just because it has dedicated servers and u dont have to worry about host ending the game now and than.Since the ps3 slim came out more ppl are going to get it for ps3.but ps3 or 360 can't be compared to the pc version because of mods,64 player servers and higher resolution if u have a good monitor :D

I played both versions of COD4, and the 360 version had the edge graphically. It was a small difference, but the textures were noticably better. Plus, LIVE is the way to go with online play, primarily because more players use headsets, but also because it has a larger community and, on a personal level, more of my friends have a 360. I don't want to play co-op with a stranger!

I'm pre-ordering this tomorrow for the Xbox 360 because:

- more people I know and play with will get it on there

- my friends who are getting it on the PS3 doesn't get online as much as I would like them to

- Xbox Live / private chat

- I just redeemed the 13 month Gold card I was given as a gift

- I prefer the 360 controller for shooters

- getting the map packs early

- they will have events like play and win, game nights, play with developers and all those other contests

- I was selected in the Xbox Live Rewards program, so I'll get rewards just for being active and buying things on Live

- I need to play more on the 360 since I've been playing more on the PS3 all year long

Where do you get that the best players tend to the 360? The same was said when the Battlefield 1943 game came out and the best scoring player was on PS3. Also lemmings said the same about fighting games and there was a tournament of SFIV which was won by a PS3 player. So yeah, those who say that the best players are on 360 are usually not right.

With the flourishing of online gaming that started over a decade ago and has just recently come to prominence, gamers have been given a great gift: the ability to play other gamers around the world without even leaving their living rooms. Of those gamers, it is the 360owners who have benefitted the most. Not only does the 360 cater for the best competitive games, including Halo 3, street fighter IV, Gears of War 2, Fifa and more, but Xbox live, though it may require a subscription fee, provides the best online console gaming experience available. As Gootecks states, "Live has the best competition, but more than that , it makes you feel like your part of a community." The main difference between Live and it's competitors in terms of online gaming, however, is the connection speed, a factor than can greatly influence competitive play. As Gootecks explains, "In street fighter IV for example you are dealing with moves that occur in 1/15 of a second, so even a minute delay in connection is a big deal." Lag can make so much of a difference that Gootecks claims it changes the game entirely. "the people who have learnt the game by playing online are actually playing a different game to the rest of us because some things that work online do not work in person, and vice versa." The objective then of online gaming is to replicate the game as though it was offline, and in this, Live leads the way. Why? "simple" says Alex Valle one of the most successful street fighter players of all time, "it has superior service/net code. You get what you pay for in other words." Gootecks agrees, "Live's connection is the best." Thanks to it's superiority, not only 360 users get to take part in the best online console gaming, but they also have direct access to many of the best players in the world who also happen to have opted for live. taken from this months 360 magazine interview with pro-gamers as to the direction of pro-gaming and their opinions on the services out their that can help promote it, original article by paul harrison.

I know on COD:WAW XBOX 360 has about twice as many active users. The better players for FPS always tend to drift towards XBOX 360.

sexy_robot_man

No, more players tend to drift, not better. And there's no difference between 10,00 people playing and 100,000, because chances are you will never play against all 100,000 of those people, or half, or 10%.

I prefer PSN over XBL just because it has dedicated servers and u dont have to worry about host ending the game now and than.Since the ps3 slim came out more ppl are going to get it for ps3.but ps3 or 360 can't be compared to the pc version because of mods,64 player servers and higher resolution if u have a good monitor :DDarkOmega93
More people getting it for the PS3? I think not my friend and the PC version will be P2P which sux. There will be twice as many people playing it on the 360.

The console versions are PTP as well. You just get added benefits on the PC version; just less than usual.

Really? The best battlefield 1943 player was on PS3.

Why? Where do you think japanese pro-players rather play? Anyways, we already had a tournament where the best PS3 player won against the best 360 player so saying that 360 players are better has no foundation.

Just get it for the platform which most of your friends are getting it for. If this hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet, oh my god... Also I played cod4 on all three platforms, tbh I didn't mind which version to play, they all played fine.

I picking up for xbox 360, basically xbox has a better controller for shooters. also Im pretty sure xbox live will have more active user to play with.

I'm getting it for my Xbox 360 & not my PS3 because I highly prefer the 360's controller, have more local friends whom own 360s, & will be able to talk to my friends whom are playing other games.

Both services offer exactly the same thing I guess with the difference of the Home / avatar setup.

I don't keep a live subcription because it really is not worth it anymore. My friend pays $12 a month for his, so $144 a year...

3 years since the ps3 came out thats almost $450 and very few online based or exclusive titles with online gameplay have come out with the exception of Halo, GoW, GTA expansions.

In that time ps3 has lost $450 of its price so really there was no benefit to having that subcription. Also there seems to be much less content released weekly on Live comparitively to ps3 now, although that may be somehow linked to America's recession. I've been lucky enough to be able to gameshare a bit too, so that really helps the pocket.

I don't know about 'better gamers' on one or the other, but definitely from the amount of swearing and children on Live it seems ps3 users are older and less annoying.

On the subject of lag people here say that 360 is somehow better because of the subscription.

The only ps3 games i've got that lag online are 360 ports that lag on that system just as badly. Like Bomberman HD/Ultra.. and that all has to do with P2P and how much distance is between the two users.

Anything centrally run on PSN ie Warhawk, Wipeout, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 is flawless.

GTAIV is another game that shows the exact same problems with lag on both consoles.

Ps3 is releasing cross-game chat soon.

I definitely think more 360 users will buy this on launch and ps3 users will hold off till closer to Christmas to buy this one.

Seems 360 has more people who only want to play FPS games

No offense, but your friend has no idea what he is doing. I pay $30 a year for Xbox Live. I've ran into loud mouthed kids on my PS3 too, just seems like there are more on Xbox Live because there are so many more Xbox Live users. Also you say people with the 360 have had nothing to play online except for Halo, Gears Of War, & GTA. That comment right there alone tells me that you are just the same as your friend, you have no idea what's going on.
