Monster Hunter Rise's first big update lands tomorrow - and puts character editing behind paid DLC

The eagerly anticipated first major update for Monster Hunter Rise has been detailed, sneaking in before the end of the month as it arrives on April 28th - just one day after the update was detailed in Capcom's digital event. It brings a suite of new challenges and monsters - plus one unwelcome tweak as a previously free feature is now locked behind a paywall.

As previously disclosed by Capcom new beasts are coming as part of the update, with Chameleos - a jittery elder dragon first introduced in Monster Hunter 2 and one that's only made fleeting appearances since - joined by meaner, harder Apex versions of iconic bastards Diablos and Rathalos. There's also a surprise brace of new elder dragons in the form of Teostra and Kushala Deora.

Apex monsters will now also make appearances during regular quests, and there'll be more regular quests too, with new solo adventures as well as the introduction of timed event quests. A new suite of arena quests will also come as part of the update, plus harder rampage events and some new story missions. Layered armour is also introduced, alongside some new paid cosmetic DLC items.

This free title update for Monster Hunter Rise won't, however, complete the base game's unfinished story, with an 3.0 update due the end of May to introduce an all-new ending as well as a selection of new monsters. Given how the HR cap has just been lifted and there's a whole world of new features coming tomorrow, hopefully there's more than enough to keep us all busy until then.

Most worryingly, though, this new update seems to lock a feature behind paid DLC, with the ability to edit your character's appearance - something you can currently do at will, albeit in limited capacity - now needing a paid-for item. Capcom is giving players the first one for free, which would seem generous if it wasn't a feature that's currently in the game in some capacity already and not behind a paywall. It's in keeping with Monster Hunter World, which also featured paid Character Edit Vouchers.

Nice. Been wondering when this new update was coming out. Sounds like some pretty good stuff in there that’ll keep me busy until the big May update, not that I’m not currently still busy playing it right now mind you. I’ve got tons of mats and stuff in preparation to craft any new stuff. Really looking forward to checking it all out tomorrow.

Making a game where it's nearly impossible to get a character to look the way you want it, and then putting editing of that characters appearance behind DLC is pretty fucked up and they know what they're doing here.

In world, you get a 1 time voucher to edit character/change gender too. you need to pay for extra use..

The updates will be slower compared to World because they want to match them with PC faster than before, also paid cosmetics and emotes were in World too, but without voice chat emotes are the easiest way to communicate, so probably it is just a little more relevant than in the previously mentioned.

How is it hypocritical when in world the only paid layered armor was the street fighter way back in base world and early pre order bonuses.... I thought they shelved the idea since iceborne dont have paid layer costumes for hunter.

Specificly mentioning layer armor cause you kill thing to craft armor. Even the street fighter armor eventually capcom made free by killing some monster in the arena and shelved the paid layer in iceborne other than pre oder bonus. But its ok, nintendo users like to pay more apparently.

On an unrelated note, we need to bring back cocaine drops. Sure, it's abit morally dubious, but if we just manufacture it on mass, with really good marketing and toothless press who bend over when we tell them, the kids will love it.

Why do you people blindly buy this shit, i mean charging for cheats in one game, charging to edit your character in another, and the game has no ending lol, and people bought this smh.

Imagine if this game was from MS how much outrage not having an ending and charging you to edit your character after a one time "free" edit, there would be countless threads, threats of boycotts etc, etc, but its CRAPcom, here have a free pass lol.

You can layer your armor with cosmetics from any other armor piece you can make in game. All this cost is tickets that drop from repeatable quests.

The outrage in this thread over a few extra cosmetics on top is a bit rediculous

1. MH Worlds had paid DLC cosmetics for the Hunter and Handler

2. The reason why the story wasn't finished was cause Rise was primarily being made during the covid lockdown. Which is already better than 95% of the garbage games that have released during the stupid covid thing.

I think it has something to do with the game being fun. Kind of the same reason why I really liked Sea of Thieves even though it was short on content.

Not sure Capcom gets a free pass here either. I've seen many complain about their shitty business practices, especially with Street Fighter. Most people seem to agree that Capcom suck in a lot of ways, but still make great games.

So what's the bitchin' about? If they're allowing you to change the facial hair and such for free, then there isn't much problems with charging for a full character edit. That's why you spend a hour plus creating your character lmao that way you wouldn't need to spend money to edit it.

Paid character customization seems pointless in a game where you're covered in armor the entire time after doing two quests.

Chameleos is a pretty cool monster to fight. Some cool new armours, weapons, decorations, etc. Some pretty tough quests. Been seeing a fair number of people carting in some of them. So far really digging this update.

Monster Hunter World also has character edit tokens. This is not really news to me.
