impressive, given the series doesn't have any history on the platform.

i'll probably pick it up this weekend, never played a game in this series, going in without many expectations besides having to learn a lot

Same for me. Loving it so far, though the performance is spotty. Running an i7-7700k and 1070, I get 50-60fps with a couple options set to High and running at 1080p. Almost time for me to upgrade the ol' GPU.

Okay, I'll have fun with my group of friends that will also be getting it. I guess you just play with strangers? That's kinda weird, dude.

Is there public/random matchmaking, or is it only with friends you know, like in Far Cry 5?

lol the news just came out that Monster Hunter World broke the record of biggest Steam launch in 2018 and has more than 240k concurrent players on Steam. Not to mention it is also on WeGame and that version got over 1.45 million pre-registrations so if Steam and WeGame numbers were combined they would be even higher. Considering how popular Monster Hunter is in China it wouldn't be too surprising if the PC version outsold the console versions.

Actually there is a Monster Hunter game on PC, it was Monster Hunter Online but it was only for China. Monster Hunter got fairly popular there, Monster Hunter World was one of the few premium games releasing this year in China that got a lot of attention other than Dynasty Warriors 9. They game also got a lot of marketing from Tencent since after all they partnered with Capcom to make Monster Hunter Online. The number of concurrent PC players in Monster Hunter World is very likely much higher than 240k as there is a WeGame version with its own servers that was made available to play before the rest of the world and it had over 1.45 million pre-registrations, even if only about 20% bought it at launch that is still a lot plus since this is a online game it will definitely continue to sell tons of copies over time, especially if Tencent keeps marketing it. The PC version could end up selling the most and even more than all consoles combined.

I just bought an 1070 a couple of months back for my vr pc, no way I'm upgrading that lol costed me an arm and a leg.

Had to upgrade my I5 too for skyrim vr and that when I just upgraded my gtx 970 to the 1070 for fallout 4 vr in april. A couple of weeks later those funny guys from bethesda release skyrim vr (that would have ran flawlessly on my 970), and it murdered my I5 6500.

I had my eye on this game for a while, but my pc is in a seperate room designated for vr, and there is no tv there. no way I'm running this on my xbox. I might move my pc to my mancave for this game, or maybe buy a second tv hehe.

There is a public matchmaking, and with 260k players, I don't think there's going to be any low pop problems, right @blackhairedhero ? ;)

I will probably buy the game at some point, but I don't really feel like playing a big online game right now. I would rather play a bunch of different games. Also, Insurgency Sandstorm Beta right now and Hunt Showdown free weekend. So, MHW releasing now is poor timing for me.

Agreed, but Dark Souls 3 didn't have it, either. I'm kinda used to it from Japanese devs. Lol I honestly don't care, as long as it looks and runs better than the console versions.

I started playing this yesterday evening and yes, it does matter. It's so much smoother. I put the framecap on 60 to keep my room from getting hot. But it's a smooth 60 at highest settings. (i7 4790k + 1080ti, 1440p) It looks way sharper, way cleaner, and smoother. It does change the game a little.

I remember that creating a character on the PS4 gave me some trouble because the character does look at little bit different once you get out of the character creation screen. On the PC version I did not have that problem with my first character.

You can play the game as a solo game. That's what I did for the first half of the game on the PS4. You don't even see any other players running around in town unless you specifically visit the online area. You will be 'online' technically but it won't affect your play in any way. Just so you know, that it's possible to play it that way.

(And as a Monhun fan I would actually recommend new players to play the game alone for a while and get aid outside of the game. Because it is more intense and personal and you learn to fight better and get a feel for damage numbers. You kind of 'need' some singleplayer experience to have an idea of what you are doing in multiplayer anyway. I still feel to this day that singleplayer MH is where it's at, but online is a real fun distraction. And obviously a lot of people fall in love with it.)

Extra power seems to be worth it.

Running the game at 1440p solid 60fps. Using a i7-6700k and GTX 1070Ti.

Everything on the highest settings with the volume rendering quality off. I'm not really sure what the volume rendering quality does, with it on it just seems like there is a blue tint layer on the whole screen. Big performance boost from turning it off though.

What are you asking here exactly? If you set the game to minimum settings and smear crisco all over the monitor, wont the PC version be the worse? whatever helps you sleep at night

Just how many handicaps does the guy need to achieve his hollow victory?

* If you set your monitor refresh to 15 Hz....
* If you adjust the display Brightness/Contrast and Color Balance to desaturate the image....
* If you adjust the display sharpness to blur the picture....
* If you use a 14 year old graphics card....
* If you play on an integrated Intel GPU from 10 years ago....
* If you play while setting the GPU to actively mine crypto currency....
* If you set game resolution to 640x480 on a 1440 display....
* If you tie a thin translucent silk sash over your eyes....
* If you play with a mouse with a Right button that doesn't click....

Seriously.... what else do you need, ni6htmare? *_*

@DragonfireXZ95: I played with both people I know and strangers. As an adult it's hard to get everyone together to play a game so sometimes you will have to rely on random people. 260k isn't a massive userbase though and like most games on Steam it will drop significantly. Hopefully they will stick with it because the monsters get much harder.

I ended up picking this up last night. seems to run well for me (at 1080p since i'm playing on my TV for now instead of my 1440p monitor) on the highest settings with a 1080/6700k.

too soon to say whether I like the game. only did the first quest where you fight a few lizards and I don't have a feel for the combat yet at all

It gets way better once they tell you all the controls. Tiny spoiler, but not really: Lock on with the F key. It makes combat way more intuitive.

I don't know why they don't tell you this sooner. Fighting without the lock on is just painful. Lol

The 60 fps alone is a gamechanger. Dang, it feels like a new game compared to the console releases.

It's a good port, they actually paid attention to mouse and keyboard this time :D

I'm still trying to get into the game--I have a problem with Japanese games in general--but I think I might actually like this one.

Palicos FTW!

Hammer is awesome. Hammer is also good preparation for the rarely used Hunting Horn when you go online. Be sure to at least give it a whirl when you're a couple dozen hours in. I'm mainly using the Hammer at the moment too. Since I didn't use the Hammer much on the PS4 version.

Ooh wow you are playing mouse/keyboard? I would prefer to play this one with a controller I think. For the analogue movement.

To get a feel for combat I advise: To play alone before playing with friends. To pick either a fast or a very slow weapon so that it feels more deliberate what you are supposed to be doing. (Sword and Shield/Long Sword, Greatsword/Hammer.) To take your time at first and focus on survival rather than trying to face-tank a monster. And to go through the combo's on the central pillar in the Training Area before trying it all out on a big monster.

If you have played with a weapon for a couple hours and you think you like it or that you don't understand it at all, be sure to hit up YT. Don't hesitate to do that in this franchise. There are some amazing weapon tutorials that really spice up your game. They don't take that much time to watch at all. I would recommend the Gaijin Hunter video's. â–³ = light attack button, O = heavy attack button, and R2 = special attack/block/shoot/charge button.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWjbhilcThM (it will show some monsters in the 25 second intro and some later bits. If you don't want to see the monsters you can just close your eyes for the first 25 seconds and close your eyes while you hear the hunting music playing.)

I can't embed video's maybe you can.

Yes, it matters to play the game on hardware that actually can handle it.

The game is awesome, btw. But it needs a performance patch. Charge Blade ftw!

This is very much a purrsonal opinion but I don't like Dual Blades much in MHW. This game is already a bit easier than other MH games (I think?) and I have seen multiple play-throughs of people using nothing but DB and not getting any better at it throughout the entire game but basically never fainting. XD No positioning, no tactics, no specific combo's, not much danger. Which to me kind of defeats the uniqueness of the combat in the series. With other weapons that some people consider easier they are at least more involved or require specific gamebreaking setups.

You can play DB beautifully and skillfully but since it's not at all required or even incentivized with such a fast weapon it kind of never happens.

Now, after about 40 hours of playing the game, I'm actually a bit worried about the difficulty of the game. It's been a total cakewalk so far. I've fainted zero times so far, which is a first in a MH game for me. I've played MH3, MH4U and MHGen, and all of them were harder. And there's no G-rank in this one either.

Oh, well. It's still fun, but... give us G-rank ASAP, please. Even my total noob gf who don't play many games at all and started with the freaking Hunting Horn (which is supposed to be pretty hard to learn) is having a breeze with the game.
