It's a tough call... Blue Dragon because of the potential of its creator, and artist and Lair because it isn't just an average game that couldn't live up to the hype it is an aweful game that didn't even come close... either way we all lose...

I think it's a shame that these games had the budgets they did and ended up being duds. I mean really, what were they thinking? they could make the graphics good and not worry about anything else?? you know what they say "You cant polish a turd"

Lair - 4.5

Blue Dragon - 6.0

I think I'd go for Lair since it was being created by a developer that created an AAA game. I was interested in the game due to the boss fights but ever since IGN's score, my interest went down. Shame but that's why we have blockbuster and friends who don't look at reviews. :P

We are talking about gaming. And thats where Lair fell short. The gameplay, from the reviews, seems to be so bad its almost unplayable. IMO, I think thats a stretch. I'd like to try it myself.

But you must admit, just as reviewers have, that Lair has very good graphics, great audio, and an intriguing story. You absolutely can't say this game flopped on all accounts. It, at least, pushed the envelope on what can be done on those three factors. And, obviously, it failed on gameplay, a HUGE factor.

I mean, really, whats worse? Having a game like Lair, that actually pushes the envelope in graphics, audio, and story? OR, having a game like Hour of Victory that does none of that.

Get off this "hype" crap. At the end of the day, Lair's a great addition to the PS3 lineup. And the general public will be playing this game, hyped or not.

There is nothing wrong with Blue Dragon, it's a fun game. Some people just can't accept it wasn't trying to raise the bar, it was a traditional JRPG. I played games like FFXII and thought they sucked. Give me traditional any day of the week.

Blue dragon by far. I lost all hope in Lair when they showed more and more of it and revealed you couldnt get off your dragon. For months iwas shown nothing that mademe think, "well actually, this game isn't that reptitive lookingafter all".

Lair flopped in pre-productionwhen one of the geniusdevs thought, "hey i know let's completely ruin this game by making it the most basic, reptitive action game ever."

I was really really looking forward to blue dragon as soon as i saw how well they'd achieved that anime-look. With sakaguchi under the helm i thought it'd be awesome.

the bad points the reviewers mention are things that should be the stronger points of an rpg; story and characters.

Graphics, great audio, and a good story are all useless if the game sucks. Gameplay is the most important thing in any game. As someone who is 30 years old and been gaming for a while you should know this. As to your other comment. Wow now thats just completly laughable. What a joke.

Lair easily COWS hyped it for the 1080P, and said it would be AAA, it was on all there lists for system selling exclusive titles, It flopped thus COWS get owned again. BLUE Dragon has already been out in Japan awhile we knew what to expect and it was never hyped AAA, also it has a 77 on game rankings which is better than the 60 Lair has on game rankings. So in short Lair was hyped more and BLUE Dragon has scored better than Lair anyway.

Lair looked awful since its' TGS 06 showing, so God knows why people continued to hype it. Blue Dragon on the other hand was hyped quite highly... I remember people said things like "Dragon Quest killer", "the saviour of the Xbox 360 in Japan" and "the next Chrono Trigger"... and hell, I was honestly one of those people too. When you consider that this is a Sakaguchi helmed game, has Toriyama doing the art design and Uematsu composing the musical score, it just seems like such a huge let-down.

Lair because I actually believed in Factor 5 and thought that it looked like an 8-8.5 game. The previews really messed with my mind because they all had great things to say especially ign. I just dunno what happened to Lair. I admit ownage by Lair.

Well to determine which was more dissapointing, you have to look at who would have been dissapointed. PS3 owners have been gushing over Lair for sometime hoping it wouldbe a new, much-needed notch in their belt. They got a crappy game that no one could be proud of. People like myself who've been waiting for Blue Dragon are probably mostly old school RPG fans of Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, & Final Fantasy. We knew what we wanted and Blue Dragon hasn't given us anything less than that. The stuff they complained about in the review is more personal preference than anything.

I'm not going to argue about which game got more hype threads... neither of us can be here 24/7, 365 days per year, counting every idiotic prediction. That's just a silly waste of time.

I say Blue Dragon was the bigger disappointment because it's coming from a studio with so much talent. Factor-5 have only ever made one AAA game, and that was Rogue Squadron II for the GameCube. Almost every other game they made has been mediocre. Hell, Star Wars: Rebel Assualt II on the PS1 scored a 4.9.. Now look at Mistwalker: Hironobu Sakaguchi -- the "father of Final Fantasy" as he's sometimes called -- creator of a vast number of AAA JRPGs; Akira Toriyama, the artist for Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Quest VIII and Chrono Trigger; and finally Nobuo Uematsu, one of the greatest videogame composers of all time. This dream lineup is a recipe for a AAA JRPG... we got a 6.0 from it.

At the end of the day, any deluded cow can hype a game AAA.. but if you compare the developers behind Lair and Blue Dragon, you'll see which one was the bigger disappointment.

I'm sorry, but that just isn't true. Would Mass Effect be getting as much attention if it wasn't a BioWare game? Would Nintendo be able to sell their shovelware Mario Party games if it wasn't made by them and didn't feature Mario? Would Metal Gear Solid 4 be as popular if it wasn't being made by Kojima.. ? Would people still be hyping Too Human if it wasn't for Silicon Knights and their $100 million budget? Developer means a lot when it comes to hyping a game. It shows if the studio is capable or not.

And yes, at the end of the day, Blue Dragon is the much better game. Lair is rubbish, Blue Dragon is above-average. The thread is discussion about which one was more disappointing -- others feel like Lair was the greater let-down, but I feel like Blue Dragon was the greater let-down since Lair was nothing to hype in the first place. Blue Dragon had a lot of potential based on early impressions and the people behind the game; Lair and its' mouthy director Julian Eggebrecht were doomed since TGS. I don't want to continue this discussion anymore since others obviously feel a different way. Agree to disagree.

I don't care what the cows hyped. I only care about what the studio had to offer -- Factor-5 weren't capable enough and therefore Lair didn't deserve the hype, while Mistalkwer were capable enough and therefore Blue Dragon did deserve the hype. I have said this many times now in the thread. This is my opinion and you may disagree with it all you want, but i'm going to hang onto it since it isn't based purely on some he said/she said threads. Factor-5 truly deserved all the bad reviews for Lair.

Blue Dragon is full of s**t, Literally! whats the obsession with poo?
Wasn't it made by the guy they kicked out of Square Enix?

Lair is most floppiest, Blue Dragon is a long game that can be enjoyed despite the review.

You shouldn't listen to Gamespot when it comes to making decisions and give the game a chance. I bought it and it's by far one of my favorite JRPG's. I'm in JRPG heaven with Blue Dragon and Persona 3. Anyways, Game Informer gave it a 9/10. It has received a lot of positive reviews and a lot of negative reviews. It's a love it/hate it game. It's an old-school JRPG that is just as good as I expected it to be despite it's flop status in System Wars.

It depends how you look at it, because Blue dragon is a love/hate game (as Bio said). Blue Dragon has several 90-100% scores on metacrtic, but at the same time has a quite a few 50-60% scores. So it just depends, I personally love the game...but thats me.

Lair on the other hand, minus a few score is flopping across the board. Lair was hyped more, esp. since the ps3 needs games..and this was suppost to be one of them.

It's a tough call... Blue Dragon because of the potential of its creator, and artist and Lair because it isn't just an average game that couldn't live up to the hype it is an aweful game that didn't even come close... either way we all lose...
