A lot of people are having to get their 360 fixed for hardware issuses. I was one of the many that had to get my PS2 fixed for hardware issuses. Let's try to keep this fair. No fanboys. Poll only if you had to get your system fixed please.l

I think that it is safe to say that 360 has a higher failure rate. I must be lucky though, because I have a near launch PS2 and a launch 360 and both of them are still running like champs without so much as a scratched disc.

I would call it in favor of the 360. That rate just seems higher.

Hopefully MS is telling the truth when they say that they have fixes in place already.

And it was a costly lesson for them to spend more time on R&D for the new system's design.

I bought my PS2 in 2000 and it is working but it is like telling me"go play with your PS3, it is new, and Im going to blow", in the other hand my Xbox 360 didn't have any problem but last time when I started PES 07, it gave some red lights then it become normal again, I was like "please be a good console and don't blow on me"

This thread is stupid. I've had my PS2 for 5 years and not a single error reading! the failure rate for 360 is way higher than PS2's.

Let's take a look at figures, shall we?

There has been a proclaimed number of 360s failing and being return and refurbished. This number is 33% or 1/3.

The accepted manufacturing defect rate is 5% at most.

PS2 sold 120million
360 sold 10... or let's just say 11 million to be safe.

5% of 120 million is 6 million. 33% of 11million is about 3.7 million.

So, of course the PS2 would have more hardware failure being older and more sold. However, the rate for 360 is absolutely ridiculous. Microsoft already declared 100% defect rate for their 360s, meaning they are all prone to break faster. Who know what the failure rate for 360 can go up to.

I think the 360's breakdown rate is worse. I haven't had mine break down yet, but I feel it migh. My PS2 did screw up though... Hmph.

Personally I have owned two ps2's, one slim, one original, and one 360. The ps2's have always worked fine with the exception of the crappy dvd player on the original one. My 360 lasted about a month before destroying the discs inside it, and I always kept it laying down and never moved it while playing games.

All Xbox 360s shipped around the 11.6 mark we're reported to be broken eventually.

I had a PS2 give me the "Disc Read Error" twice. I sent it in once because I was stupid enough not to do some research on it. The second time I got it, I just opened up my PS2, cleaned the lens with some rubbing alcohol, and it was like it was brand new.

I cant fix my 360 by myself :( Going onto my 4th

You'd think that after a few PS2s that a guy would figure out how to clean the lens.

Seriously though the Xbox360 failures are alot worse since 1. You cannot fix it yourself like most of the PS2 failures. 2. They happen extremly early in the console's lifespan(usually under a year) and 3 they are alot more frequent(I seriously don't know a single person who owns a 360 for more than about 10 months that hasn't had to send it back yet).

DRE'S,2 bum controller ports. I know 3 people with launch 360's that haven't had any problems.

imo i think both had the same amount of problems.when peoples had to turn there ps1 upside down or put two disk in to play game becuase of the lens problem. then with the ps2 with the same issues was annoying. i myself in the seven years of owning a ps2 i went thru 4. the first die on me 90 days after purchase and customer servise told me i had to pay to get it fix. the second one die a year later. then when sony revised the ps2 i brought one thinking it would be better than the last two. it die shortly after a year. then people started post quick fixes for the ps2. i just got tired of having to fix it and keep breaking my warrenty just to fix the damn thing. but thats just my opinion.

You guys must have found the magic batch or something because I'm in no way a xbox hater(hell I own a xbox 360) but the only people I know who still have their original Xboxs are the ones that just recently bought it(like me). Personally I have had my PS2 "fail" on me 2 times(DREs) but cleaning the lens gets rid of DREs 90% of the time(I have personally "fixed" many PS2s this way).

When a company extends it's warranty to 3 years and possibly faces a HUGE lawsuits because of hardware failure you know it's pretty much as bad as it can get. The PS2 was in no way close to be in that situation.

The rate for the 360 seems higher but the way Sony dealt with the DRE's was despicable. At least with MS you get free repair/replacement and free shipping on it all.

I agree, my PS2 hasn't had ONE error, except software glitches and discs that were scratched by knocking the console hard.

That was the fate of Mercenaries and GTA-VC =(

One of my PS2 had the disc read error crap but it was one of the older models which had little wheel near the driver on the inside where I could regulate the laser or something and make the games work. But then even that stopped working. My second PS2 started for no apparent reason one day blowing...cant think of the english word..............fuses? Couldnt get that one fixed. So I am on my 3rd PS2. I sent my 360 back two times but that was becouse I got paranoid about it breaking that. It froze on me once or twice and I panicked=) It never really broke down but I had no trouble sending it back to the service place.

As of right now the PS2 had a much higher failure rate (damn near 75-80%) The 360 is catching up. Sony never saw the DREs coming though, that was completely unexcpeted. They fixed the problem luckly, but it wasn't until they had sold millions more than M$ has sold 360s.

Luckly M$ knows there is a problem and working on it before another DRE thing happens.

75-80%? Hell no. Theyd have to issue a recall if it was that much. There is no way that its possible that 90-96 million PS2s broke.

I dont think hes saying that 80% broke, just that alot of the early once I guess in some way have a flaw that might result in the console breaking . Its a similar thing as the whole "every 360 is defective".

Yeah, this guy seriously exaggerates it. 5% is it. They never had any problems that wasn't unacceptable.

You are a blind fanboy saying Sony had 75-80% failure rate, and M$ did catch up with them and flewpast them a long time ago. They have 100% failure rate.

lol 33%. Link please? O right most of the links are just people ASSUMING that the failure rate is that high. Btw every system I've owned has not had a defect or problem, including ps2, and 360.

Chance of failure =/= failure

It is an inherent flaw in the hardware, it doesn't mean that it will happen to all the units it just might.

Lets try to keep these to ACTUAL hardware failures. If you really had a hardware issuse. Not really intrested in "well I heard this, and they said that, or a friend of my cousins roommate had his blow up" Nah ! ONLY if you HAD a hardware system failure. Yes, Disc Read Errors count.

Design flaw and failure are two very different things there.
