More proof consoles are holding back the potential of PC.

you are the one who started insulting people. logical discussion stopped there. what are you expecting out of this thread? people to just go buy gaming pcs and stop playing consoles? people to apologize to you? get over yourself guy, everyone who isnt a casual gamer is getting screwed over these days. i hate origin but love mass effect... still not gonna buy me3. no tears here.

There ya go, that's it...yes, I want people to pay for a better $600 to $800 device that is actually the same price or cheaper than a console setup because it replaces multiple devices and then people would get better gaming experiences and the industry would move along in a better direction.

And I should care because...? If I get a better gaming experience on consoles, without needing to fap to every 1080p pixel...why on earth should I spend $600 more for some backwardsass console port? For the "sake" of gaming? Oh please, try playing fighting games on PC competitively. Not everyone wants to hunch forward/slouch behind a PC 24/7...I got better stuff to do and occasionnaly play on console. Get over yourself. PC elitists...

This isnt the Console's fault. This is DICE chasing after COD. They dumbed down everything about BF2 to appeal to the casual shooter crowd.

DICE promised a true sequel to BF2 and didnt deliver. Blame them. Had they really wanted a legit sequel, they would have made one for the PC and said "a console version is in the works." They didnt which says to me they didnt care about making a true sequel. Bad Company and BF3 is the direction they want to go in. Just like Zipper did with Socom, they are changing gears. It will bite them eventually just like it did to Zipper.

It's a lot easier to pop in here for 30 seconds while something's compiling than to find 30 uninterrupted minutes for a game.

More mindless drivel, ts not a better expereince on consoles, multiplats are almost ALWAYS better on consoles in areas other than just 1080p resolutions. Fighting games work fine on PC with a controller. You don't have to slouch to play PC, I have it hooked up to a big HDTV and sit back and play (who the F needs to slouch forward to use a keyboard and mouse? Do you have a desk with a rollout keyboard stand? Because mine allows me to sit back all comfy like.). And who says you can't play PC if you have other things o do alongside it in your free time? It's not like it automatically sucks your life away, unless of course you believe the stereotypes about PC Gamers, then in that case your just an asshat like everyone who uses stereotypes for serious judgement.

EDIT: plus, like I said, $600 or even $800 isn't bad at all seeing as it will replace your computer AND your console, the combined price of which costs more than a reasonable gaming PC.

As of late, occasionally yes. I might have wanted a PC gaming rig when I was like 18 and all I did was play UT2k4 and stuff like that...but I grew out of PC gaming. Only reasons to go back are maybe Diablo 3 and some smaller indie games. **** shooters.

I know PC gaming has teh superior graphics and framerates...but the real new ideas come from consoles. Fighting games, driving games, experimental games... Sure you have Shogun 2, BF3 and soon Borderlands 2 on PC and whatnot...but really PC development is stuck in this endless cyle of shooters. How is complaining on a forum about how other should enjoy gaming any more mature? Hate to break it to you, but SMG1 and 2 have more passion for videogames that anything that $1000+ piece of plastic has put out in the past decade. You have fun being tech savvy, I'll just enjoy hooking up with women and I'll let them enjoy my joystick in a mature way. (Did I do elitism right?)

TC, you argument is flawed in so many ways that I'm unsure where to start. Just for the record, I am a PC gamer and have been a PC gamer for about 20 years now.

First off, you could blame just about anyone, why single out consoles as holding the supposed blame?

- Blame PC Gamers for not buying enough shooters. If PC Gamers bought far more copies of the shooters available, DICE/EA would be far more likely to develop PC Exclusive shooters.

I believe you already covered this by wanting to blame CoD. Lets face it, sales are made by multiplats.

- Blame PC owners. Most PC Owners do not own high end rigs. Cards like the 88- and 9800, mobile video cards and build in gpu's are still among the more common GPU's on STEAM. If more PC Gamers upgraded their rigs to high end GPU's DICE would have a bigger PC market to cater to.

However, an 8800 will play games as large as what TC would like to see. Graphics, physics and all that included requires the beefer rig sure but when games cater to the lowest common denominator (consoles) whats the point of buying new hardware?

- Blame Call of Duty. BF3 was in so many ways EA's attempt to compete with CoD's incredible success. The core of that success lies on the consoles (CoD have sold a lot more on consoles than on the PC), so if you're chasing the CoD market share, you HAVE to focus on the consoles.

I believe that focus is what the TC is trying to convey as the simplifcation of an old favorite series (in a less thoughtful way).

- Blame it on the DICE engineers and artists. If BF3 didn?t have such a high graphical standard, so advanced graphical effects, so many physics objects and elements it would have been much easier to make bigger maps without hitting hardware limitations. Blame it on the graphics!

Actually, DICE has created a game that is fairly well optimized, however I would agree to blaming the artists for designing such small maps that don't utilize all the extra free space most BF3 maps have or creating maps that could utilize gameplay for 24/32/64 player combat.

- Blame it on capitalism. Let?s face it, EA/DICE don?t make games to put a smile on your shiny face. They make games to sell for a profit. In their estimation, they would make a bigger profit if they developed their game to work across multiple platforms. Making money > your happiness.

Unfortuneately, this is true and the reason why so many game programmers have been layed off and fired this gen.

Next your argument, that because BF2 had bigger maps, it must be due to consoles. There are plenty of console games with maps tens of times larger than BF2's largest maps. Also, on the PC, Daggerfall had a MUCH bigger map than Morrowind. Does that mean that PC's got weaker in the in-between years? If not, how is the comparison any less valid than the one you?re trying to make?

Out of curiosity, are those console exclusive games with the large maps found on the PS3? I love large freeroaming'ish games and would love to give them a try.

At the end of the day, I'm sure console hardware was a factor in how DICE developed their game, but I'm also pretty confident that it was just one of many concerns. A desire to be more like CoD was most likely a big factor, needing to limit scale and scope due to very advanced graphics was another concern, not limiting their potential market among lower end PC's was probably another concern as well (something many of the larger PC exclusive titles try to do).

I believe the TC's arguement would have been better suited stating that due to the consoles limitations in BF3 that the maps were designed and layed out for the smaller player counts found on console. This left large sections of maps unused and the redesign of the B2K maps were limited due to the lack of effort in creating extra content for the PC.(Karkand is missing flags from BF2 and were probably taken out because the map would need a redesign exclusively for the PC.)

And if you dont like the changes DICE made, dont like the map size, the run speed, the vehicle handling, the point system... just play ARMA 2-3 and leave BF3 to the people who like their shooters with less realism and more / faster action.

Wow. I have to say that TC is a total idiot. The maps in BF3 are not that small, this whole thread is based upon a false premise. His "proof" is some map made in Paint that has no merit.

He just hates BF3 and needs some false excuses to justify his hate. Why did this thread get this many replies?

Its called Zatar Wetlands you f*cking moron, it was in BF2!!! I circled the area in paint, that's it, look up the Zatar Wetlands map, google is your friend dumbass. So, once again, how is my argument AT ALL false?

Zatar Wetlands is not in BF3. That's why your argument is terrible.

[QUOTE="jun_aka_pekto"]

Wouldn't it be easy to prove or disprove the TC's premise by comparing the Karkand map from both Battlefield games?

menes777

Those were shrunk down...considerably, in fact it would be more pathetic because Strike at Karkand is much smaller than Zatar wetlands, but it was still shrunk down because of consoles, heres another demonstration.

karkand.jpg

I would like to see Wasdie address this. The 64player map in BF3 looks very similar to the 16player map in BF2. With an extra 2 spawn points and the American spawn point moved up. Were there complaints about the map being too big??? To me that map should have been made bigger at least. Not the same size, but bigger. Fighting around the train wreck was pretty intense and then that thrill when you actually crossed the bridge and were holding like a little beachhead. Now the map isn't really that much different than the others.

The 64 player version of Karkand has point across the river. They just reduced the distance between the American spawn and the city. That was the only major change...

You obviously haven't played BF3 on the PC.

The maps are plenty big on the PC. Large maps != more fun. With the expectation of those really tiny maps like Metro, the BF3 maps are good sized. They aren't as empty as they were in BF2 and there is a larger emphasis on infantry fighting. The small, vocal minority, like Jebus, has been the ones **** but the PC's numbers have been very strong since launch and the consoles have even been stronger.

I think people overestimate how big Battlefield 2 was in terms of player pop. On average there were 30-40k people playing during your standard gaming hours with 50k+ at peak. Numbers for BF3 have been roughly the same on the PC and a big higher on the consoles.

I, along with many other gamers, have had a lot of fun. A lot of the criticisms of BF2 early on by journalists where that the maps were a bit to large for the pace of the game. The maps were good sized for the fast moving jets and vehicles, but the infantry combat suffered greatly for it. They've balanced it out a lot more.

There has been a lot of other techincal issues that people face. It was obvious the game was rushed at launch.

You mean people defending mediocrity? Yes.

by your assessment its mediocrity. But some of us are entertained and enjoy our gaming time. But of course that means we're ignorant or have bad taste. It couldn't mean that having a fun time is more important than pushing an industry that I am not employed in, nor need to since......as I said in enjoying my games. You're right. It has to be this serious and important. It can't just be a fun hobby of mine.

Also, how is this thread still alive? How did it take this long to realize OP circled a map in paint that isn't even in BF3, so he could talk about how much smaller it is in BF3? How is it that when Armored Kill comes out with gigantic maps, haters will still complain?

How is that map irrelevant? I'm talking about how BF2's maps are bigger than BF3's, so I took an actual map layout from BF2 and circled the small fraction of it that's equal to the size of a BF3 map? How the f*ck is that irrelevant? Explain that to me?

How is complaining on a forum about how other should enjoy gaming any more mature? Hate to break it to you, but SMG1 and 2 have more passion for videogames that anything that $1000+ piece of plastic has put out in the past decade. You have fun being tech savvy, I'll just enjoy hooking up with women and I'll let them enjoy my joystick in a mature way. (Did I do elitism right?)

No, you did ignorance and stereotypes right though. Plus games like Minecraft (PC originated) and terraria are more enjoyable and unique than Nintendos milkng of a multiple-decade old franchise.

Taking standard 3D mario platform game mechanics and putting them onto isometric planets=better than anything on PC? Yeah f*cking right!!! That statement alone shows your immaturity, that combined with your stereotypical statement that PC gaming somehow turns you into an asexual no-life more than other forms of gaming.

[QUOTE="Bewareoffalling"] I mean really has gaming come to this?cainetao11

You mean people defending mediocrity? Yes.

by your assessment its mediocrity. But some of us are entertained and enjoy our gaming time. But of course that means we're ignorant or have bad taste. It couldn't mean that having a fun time is more important than pushing an industry that I am not employed in, nor need to since......as I said in enjoying my games. You're right. It has to be this serious and important. It can't just be a fun hobby of mine.

I enjoy Minecraft, Red Orchestra 2, ARMA 2 (and its Dayz mod), Crysis, and Max Payne 3 just fine, because none of those game are bastardized in any meaningful way by consoles (Max Payne 3 especially, other than possibly the level of graphics its PC version has, everything it does is possible on consoles with no compromises), but then again, why would I talk on this forum about games I have no problems with, it makes for boring conversation on a site like this.

[QUOTE="Stalkerfieldsis"]

[QUOTE="DrTrafalgarLaw"] And I should care because...? If I get a better gaming experience on consoles, without needing to fap to every 1080p pixel...why on earth should I spend $600 more for some backwardsass console port? For the "sake" of gaming? Oh please, try playing fighting games on PC competitively. Not everyone wants to hunch forward/slouch behind a PC 24/7...I got better stuff to do and occasionnaly play on console. Get over yourself. PC elitists...DrTrafalgarLaw

Consoles too, but at least on console I get some neat stuff. Sure you could hook your PC into your TV in the living room or some other weird contraption...but really...who bothers? It looks ugly. If you PC elitists had your way...I would weep for gaming. If you PC elitists had your way

What? Many popular multiplat franchises on consoles originated on PC, Rainbow Six, Crysis, Battlefield, Call of duty, Ghost Recon, Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Operation Flashpoint, Gothic, Red Faction, Minecraft, Max Payne, FEAR, Realistic Racing games in general, authentic Flight games in general, in-depth RPG's in general, almost 100% of RTS's, most realistic shooters (I'm talking Ghost Recon 1, Operation Flashpoint 1 and the first 3 Rainbow six realistic), THE VERY IDEA OF ONLINE GAMING CAME FROM PC. Consoles bring true innovation? Completely, utterly false.

I suppose this is an argument. But consoles can't be holding back ALL PC titles. There aren't any PC games out right now that show any evidence that they can do more than the developers are currently producing.

If anything's holding PC's back, it's the developers. If they can't take total advantage of today's PC hardware, then that has nothing to do with "consolization".

"But consoles can't be holding back ALL PC titles."--->True, Max Payne 3 for example

"There aren't any PC games out right now that show any evidence that they can do more than the developers are currently producing."----->Not true

BF3 is pretty focused on consoles and their maps are smaller than decade-old ones, mean while ARMA 3 will be as or more advanced and its map is an ENTIRE COUNTRY essentially.

Crysis 2 was much more linear and its graphics didn't jump forward nearly as much as Crysis did from shooters of its time (even though its still pretty much the best looking, only after a months later DX11 patch, its still not as big a leap ahead as Crysis 1 was), not to mention it had less (and worse) physics and destructability, and before the high res texture pack, it had smaller textures in the PC version than Crysis 1. Plus it had no f*cking prone which is annoying!!

To set the record straight, these are far from the only examples of games being held back, I just figured I'd avoid writing a novels worth of games and descriptions of how they are noticeably held back.

[QUOTE="JC_Spot"] You frequent gaming forums but only occasionally game?Stalkerfieldsis

As of late, occasionally yes. I might have wanted a PC gaming rig when I was like 18 and all I did was play UT2k4 and stuff like that...but I grew out of PC gaming. Only reasons to go back are maybe Diablo 3 and some smaller indie games. **** shooters.

He's more grown up, yet he plays mario galaxy, go away dude your pathetic. Meanwhile I'll be palying games and doing schoolwork and consuming media on one device like a mature, modern, tech-savvy person.

playing pretentious indie games or M rated games doesnt make you any more mature, if anything with your current attitude on this forum you have proven yourself to be quite the immature little kid.

Schoolwork hahah, yeah you just proved it.Console gamer here, and moving into a flat in Edinburgh soon hopefully, and my own job apprentiship aswell and do what i do to get by, prioritise the pub and gigging over having an amazing computer or even games in my older age, this old laptops coming up for 3 and still going strong.

I would disagree, it isn't consoles that hold bak the PC it is the console userbase that does.

Casual console gamers do not want to much depth, they want simple quick games that have flash. As a result games are getting more simplistic as they are dumbed down in order to appeal to the casual consolite.

If only the PC was a strong enough platform to prevent consolization, the problem is its not and thats been proven time and time again. Unless you are Blizzard you usually struggle releasing things exclusivly for the platform. If you are a pc gamer you better hope the next consoles are monsters or pc gaming will continue to be held back.

Consoles indirectly hold back PC but the real fault is with the devs. Just look at what Modders did for Mass Effect 3 with some simple texture replacements. I guess some devs can just rely on Modders to fix their mistakes but they should at least make the game easy to mod rather than needing to use a texmod program as a back door into brute forcing texture mods into the game.

I wouldn't say "normally" as if refering to it as "school" is sooo wierd, but I see your point. It is the internet so I suppose you have no reason to believe me anyway. Plus, its a forum, I vent on the idiots here while remaining level-headed in the real world.
