The Street Fighter franchise or fighters in general(RTS as well actually) It's a genre built entirely on the concept of winning and losing. None of this K/D bullcrap, these levels, unlocks, perks, and teams. This is just the best of the best. one on one in a pure test of reflex, adaptability, and control of the system. Few genres test your skill like some of the best fighters, and even fewer can match Street Fighter. Plus that whole evo tournament(I don't know the name) speaks for itself.
MY RTS pick is Starcraft.
FPS it's Counterstrike in a no contest
Sports games wise I'm going with Madden. tons of "core audience" pretentious gamers assume that there actually isn't much to the game. Most of them would be wrong.
IMO Im just looking at games like MW2 and I just dont see a huge skill gap. Its just "noobs", "pubs" and "quick scoping douches". BELOW_MEE
Wth is a "pub"
On topic: I'd say RTS and Fighters are the most competitive and require the most skill and patience. Funny, since I don't play either of these genres

Public. Apparently the term, "Pubstar" is derogative.[QUOTE="BPoole96"][QUOTE="BELOW_MEE"]IMO Im just looking at games like MW2 and I just dont see a huge skill gap. Its just "noobs", "pubs" and "quick scoping douches". BELOW_MEE

Yeah. Basically me. Shame that public lobbies are like 97.3% of all games played on console FPSs with matchmaking and no lobbies :D[QUOTE="br0kenrabbit"]Never heard of it. Every single one of those games on my list is still going stong today. Does Starsiege Tribes still have a large active community?Starsiege Tribes deserves to be at the top of that list and no one has even mentioned it. :?

 Never heard of Tribes? I feel old. :(
Yes, there are still active servers going. After Vivendi dropped the official master server, the community took over and now there's a few master servers. Most people choose one based on location.

I've heard of Tribes but not Starsiege Tribes...I've heard of Tribes but not Starsiege Tribes...BELOW_MEE
They just dropped the Starsiege name out of Tribes 2, but the first game was Starsiege Tribes.
lol then it must be competitive if somoone who has never even played it thinks so. Off Topic/ All my South Korean friends are beasts at Starcraft lmaoStarcraft 2 has to top the list. I've never seen a game so entertaining to watch, and with so many options for the players to strategize with. I've never played the game, but I still watch a load of shoutcasts.
One day I'm going to move to Korea and become a pro Starcraft 2 player. It is my destiny.

insert most fighting games here. would have fought you would have mentioned street fighter at least conisdering how much hype and money people get out of these tourneysdonaldo1989Its actually right next to Halo. Take note. IT doesnt allow me to space it below.
Street Fighter series. It takes skills, hours to days of practice, great reflexes, dedication, and sometimes even talent. I play a lot, but I'm no where as good as a lot of those players in EVO tournaments.
There's a big difference between the most popular competitive games and which games are the best for competitive play (requiring the most skill and therefore having the largest skill differentiation between new players and professionals).CentricStorm
How about giving us some examples of what you're talking about?

...and to think that I was simply referring to the games where people care the most about winning. Way to complicate things CentricStorm.[QUOTE="CentricStorm"]There's a big difference between the most popular competitive games and which games are the best for competitive play (requiring the most skill and therefore having the largest skill differentiation between new players and professionals).majadamus

For the purposes of this I will just refer to FPS games: Some of the most popular (i.e. most often played) competitive games: Call of Duty 4 (Xbox 360/PS3), Halo Series (Xbox 360). Some of the games that are the most skill-based (i.e. highest difference between new players and veterans): Quake Series (PC), Counter Strike Series (PC).Um why aren't quake 3 Arena and sarcraft up on the top?? AS well as Halo 3?? last time i checked they still have had more money in those tourneys, Halo 3 for MLG has 100,000 dollar first prize at every nationals.Sniping_CrowbarLeave the Gamespot forums and dont EVER come back...at least not until you learn how to read. If you ask why, then please get out of the gene pool. Don't apologize. Just dont do it again.

There's a lot of aim assist in that game (and correct me if I am wrong, but the aim assist is actually allowed in MLG tournaments) which drastically reduces the skill requirement for Halo 3. There is a lot less difference between a professional and a new player in Halo 3 than there is in a PC game such as Counter Strike: Source. It still takes a lot of skill to play at professional level but it can't be compared to Counter Strike or Quake.
